Hakuho High School. A school for the children of the rich and famous. Known for exceptional grades, its abundance of amenities, and its illustrious alumni. Drawing students from all around the world, to grace its prestigious halls.
"Have you heard?" One girl asked hushed, her voice a poor attempt at a whisperโas she sat atop a wooden desk, nestled between her two friends. Who waved her to continue, both fascinated and intrigued with what she had to say.
"I heard from one of the teachers that a foreign student is being transferred into our class!" The two gasped, with mouths a gape and eyes shining with excitement. Demanding details, they giggled and grinned at the scarce information their friend could spare, allowing their imaginations to run wild.
"Do you think it's a guy?" One asked, beaming at the thought. The enthralled trio could only hope for a fresh male face. Praying to whatever gods were above for an attractive one at the very least. As their blood ran hot with anticipation, the three eagerly theorized about their new foreign student.
"Maybe he's from England-"
"Or America!"
"Of course you would say that Rina." One giggled, playfully elbowing her friend. "You've always had a thing for white Americans."
"I can't help it something about men with blonde hair, and blue eyes just makes me go ohhhh~" Rina declared, swaying as she shamelessly imagined the boy of her dreams.
"Rina lower your voice!"
"I think those American actors only look like that in the movies and are probably taken in real life."
"I don't care as long as he looks like a young Brad Pitt or Leo Dicaprio I can die a happy woman!" She swooned once more, arms flailing in a less-than-graceful manner as the teen passionately emphasized her point.
Laughing at their helplessly romantic friend, they swiftly continue their discussion regarding all the possibilities concerning their new classmate. Blissfully unaware that their painfully loud conversation had garnered the notice of a teen with dark indigo locks just a few seats over.
Reo sat in his assigned seat next to Nagi, who was sprawled out over his side of the table. His eyes fixated on the screen of his phone, as he tapped away mindlessly at his game. While his purple-haired companion absentmindedly ran his fingers through his hair. Using it to serve as a distraction, to the painfully obvious gossip session that was happening a few feet away from them. But to no avail.
Gritting his teeth in irritation, Reo seethed in silent annoyance. He hid it expertly though, as if there was one thing Reo Mikage was good at besides football it was faking a false sense of indifference.
Now he was certain the majority of their classmates were fully aware of the trio's conversation. Luckily for them, the majority of class 2-4 were either too preoccupied to care or were just too impassive to do anything about their obnoxiously loud conversation. Showing no inclination to do anything about the chatty girls, aside from tuning them out in favour of something else.
Which irked the amethyst-eyed boy more than he cared to admit.
"Hey Nagi, looks like we're gonna be getting a new foreign classmate" Turning his attention away from the gaggle of girls in favour of his friend. Reo looked to his lazy companion, who had yet to move an inch, eyes still glued to his screen.
"How bothersome" Nagi mumbled, the thought of putting effort into welcoming his new classmate sounded like too much of a hassle for his liking. To which Reo only hummed in acknowledgment, as his thoughts unintentionally wandered to the new student.
Though the amethyst-eyed boy was still annoyed with his vexing classmates, that didn't mean he wasn't curious about the new student. While it was common for foreign transfers to arrive, it didn't make them any less exciting to the student body. Though most of the time they weren't anything special. Unlike his Nagi.
"Everyone, get in your assigned seats, the bell will ring soon." A strict female voice pulled Reo from his thoughts. As the students of class 2-4 rushed to their assigned seats post-haste, in fear of getting on the wrong side of their teacher. Nakamura Aoi. A stern-looking woman, with short hair and plain features.
"Good morning, Nakamura-Sensei!" The class spoke in perfect unison, as their teacher nodded in acknowledgement. Responding with her own brief "Good Morning." Standing at the podium in front of the class, she set her backpack next to her desk.
"I hope you all had a good summer, and I expect you all did the summer reading as instructed yes?" The vast majority responded with loud Yes's, masking the handful of shameful No's perfectly. Silently thanked their lucky stars that Ms. Nakamura didn't hear them.
"Good, because I will be taking a quiz at the end of the period." The woman's words were followed by the groans of students and silent complaints that they would never voice aloud.
"Also before class starts, I have a quick announcement, we have a new male student today." Reo couldn't help but silently side-eye the girls who had been fussing over the topic with undivided attention, cringing as he watched them grin from ear to ear as if they had just found the answer to world peace.
"He recently moved from Brazil and is trying his best to fit in and learn the language, so please treat him well. Also, he is very reserved so consider this your warning." Nakamura added as the whole room seemed to tense at the glower she gave them. As if daring them to step out of line, before looking towards the door. "Akira, you may come in."
Nothing.
As the curious class stared holes into the entrance expectingly, they waited patiently for the void to be filled by the presence of the foreign student they had heard so much about. And yet still nothing but silence filled the air. The class watched intrigued as their teacher breathed a sigh, she walked towards the door peering her head out into the corridor.
"Akira? Venha e se apresente." Reo's interest couldn't help but peek at the sound of the foreign language. It was thick and sweet like honey, and yet exotic and alien, like a rare fruit. The indigo teen couldn't decipher a single word, other than the male's name.
Akira. Meaning bright.
'He must be Japanese but born outside of Japan.' He was right, as expected. There was nothing special about his new class fellow, just another dull individual whose whole personality was most likely based on the fact that he was born in a foreign country. How unoriginal.
He couldn't hear the voice coming from the other side of the door, but judging from his teacher's frequent whispering in the foreign language, the boy seemed to be responding. But Reo was uninterested in what was materializing beyond the classroom door and now didn't seem to be the only one.
"He must be really shy," Rina huffed, resting her head on her hands. The purple-haired teen almost agreed with her but stopped himself in the nick of time. "I'm already bored." the girl grumbled throwing her head back in exasperation.
"Don't be salty Rina! You're just pissed you're not getting your blonde and blue-eyed boyfriend from America."
"I'm not! For your information, I like brunettes and blondes! I don't discriminate" Tuning out his classmate's argument, the amethyst-eyed boy turned his attention to Nagi. Who had remained silent, while all this transpired, his attention never wavering from his video game. Reo didn't even try to fight back his smile, as he stared at his treasure. His one in a million, who was his and his alone.
"Apologies for the delay, he's very nervous today. Akira, come in."
A string of gasps seized Reo's attention for a brief moment, as his eyes strayed away from Nagi. Glancing towards the door, Reo wholeheartedly expected to see an average-looking student. He couldn't have been more wrong. Reo's eyes were as wide as golf balls, surprise painting his face like a splash of cold water.
And in that moment two things were clear. Reo Mikage was wrong and his new classmate was far more interesting than his name let on.
