wheeler residence
nancy wheeler had begged her sister to go to a party with her after she broke up with her boyfriend, steve harrington. being alone at a harrington party was something you never wanted to do and nancy's sister, (y/n) knew this so agreed. the afternoon of the party, (y/n) was on the phone with her best friend, jonathan byers. and he, of course, had opinions.
"you're serious?" he said, "a party?"
"i'm doing this for nancy, okay?" (y/n) sighed.
"you hate parties, and you don't particularly like steve harrington," jonathan pointed out.
"yeah, but nancy needs this, jonathan," she replied, "this could be good for her soul."
"and just you two are going? no male chaperone?" he smirked.
"we don't need one," she replied.
"it'll be late and your sister will probably get drunk, i'm coming with you," jonathan said.
"don't you have a curfew?" (y/n) asked.
"if my mom knows i'm with the wheeler girls she won't care," he replied, "besides it's for a good cause."
"oh shut up," she rolled her eyes with a smile.
"i'll meet you there and if you're too intoxicated to drive home, i'll just drive you and we'll get the car tomorrow," jonathan explained.
"deal," she replied.
she hated admitting it, but jonathan was and always had been one of her best friends. he'd taken care of her, and consequently her sister, since the three of them were kids. and for that, she adored him.
"(Y/N)!" nancy called from downstairs.
"gotta go," she said to jonathan.
"bye," he said quickly and she hung up.
"WHAT?" she yelled back.
"GET DOWN HERE!" nancy called out.
(y/n) rolled her eyes but went to the staircase and stared down at her sister, "i'm not going any further until you tell me what's going on."
"we need to go out, mom needs more...milk," she peered into the kitchen then back at her sister with a devious smile.
"now?" she asked.
"yes," she replied then she walked towards the door where the jingling of keys could be heard.
(y/n) grabbed her purse then ran downstairs. she got into the passenger seat of nancy's car and looked at her skeptically as she closed the door behind her.
"what are we actually doing?" she asked nancy.
"shopping, of course," nancy smiled and put the car in reverse.
"for?" she asked.
"party clothes," nancy replied.
"and where might we be going for that? you know mom only buys us clothes in indianapolis," she pointed out.
"barb and i used to go to this place on 5th street before she died," nancy replied, "they sell the good stuff."
"marijuana?" she asked.
"ha ha," nancy said sarcastically, "good party tops."
"can't we just wear sweaters or something?" she replied.
"no," nancy sighed, "steve's parties are different."
"do we have to show cleavage?" she asked.
"no way," nancy shook her head, "it just needs to be a step up from sweaters."
they pulled up in front of a shop called Deb Shops. (y/n) looked at nancy who was grinning ridiculously.
"this better not be expensive," (y/n) raised an eyebrow.
"trust me, it's not expensive at all," nancy replied.
thirty minutes later, they were walking out of the store laughing so hard nancy almost fell over. they got into the car, tears in their eyes from laughing so hard.
"i can't even believe your ex-boyfriend owes you favors, still," nancy laughed.
"i can't believe that he got so flustered," (y/n) laughed which made nancy laugh even harder.
"free clothes will never fix what that douchebag did to you, but it gets pretty damn close," nancy said.
"sure does," she smiled, "and he still owes me even more favors."
"what a loser," nancy smirked and that made (y/n) smile.
her ex-boyfriend, ethan, had graduated last year and had cheated on her by having an affair with his english teacher. he promised her favors for life if she kept her mouth shut about it all and she'd never agreed to the blackmail but he always held it up. it never fixed the fact that it had happened and that it hurt so much that (y/n) hated the idea of love but she'd moved on long ago.
"i can't believe we both bought the same dress," she laughed, "i figured you'd want to wear black or something."
"(y/n)," nancy said, "i love matching with you."
"aww don't be all sappy with me, nanc," she chuckled.
"it won't last forever," nancy smirked.
