"so, what's diagon alley?" i ask cedric as we head toward the fireplace. he freezes mid-step, staring at me like i just told him the sun doesn't exist. "what is diagon alley?? bro, what... it's basically a muggle mall but, you know, make it magical. you can buy everything hogwarts requires for the school year. by the way, we're doing that with dad tomorrow. but today, we're meeting my friends for ice cream, which, by the way, is the best ice cream you'll ever have in your life. it's so magical, chaotic, and almost perfect that you're gonna shit your pants," he says, completely deadpan.

i blink at him, trying not to laugh. "shit my pants? what, am i going to meet wallows again or something?"

cedric rolls his eyes. "well, not literally. by the way, who are these 'willows' you keep talking about?"

"willows?! get the fuck outta here," i say, practically offended. "it's wallows. literally the best band to ever exist. you probably know dylan minnette because he was in 13 reasons why, but anyways, then there's cole—he's my babygirl—and braeden, who's a diva. well, a bald diva, but you get it."

cedric stares at me like i just started speaking gobbledegook. he's clearly stuck on something, but i don't even care. wallows deserves the hype, and i'll die on this hill.

"and who are we waiting for? can't we just head out and let them meet us there?" i ask cedric as we walk toward the group.

"we're waiting for aidan, cho, theo, and marizza—and their girlfriends—and hayley, who's coming with hannah," he says casually, like this isn't taking forever.

"are they all in your house? by the way, you still haven't told me which house you're in," i point out, curious.

cedric gives me a look. "first of all, you never asked. and second, yeah, most of them are in my house, hufflepuff—well, except for two who are in different houses. but hufflepuffs are known for being loy—"

before he can finish, his friends come running up, and cedric immediately switches gears. "guys, this is eloise, my sister," he says, gesturing toward me.

"oh, um, hi, how's everyone?" i manage to say, trying not to sound as awkward as i feel.

"omg, she's the eloise diggory? it's so nice to finally meet you!" one of the girls, cho, says enthusiastically. "i'm cho, your brother's ex—but now best friends—and these are aidan, theo, liah, marizza, maya, hayley, and hannah. we're all in hufflepuff, except me and maya. i'm in ravenclaw, and she's in gryffindor," she adds, pointing to each person as she speaks.

"it's a pleasure to meet all of you," i say politely. "are we all ready to head out to the ice cream shop?"

"yeah, we're all set," hayley says, slinging her bag over her shoulder. "by the way, i've got to head out for a bit—draco's here, and we're going to pick up some books. i'll catch up with you all later." with that, she turns and walks off.

"who's draco?" i ask, curious about the sudden mention of a new person.

"oh, he's just the guy she likes," hannah chimes in. "well, they're not officially a couple yet, but i'm betting she'll ask him out by march. at least, i hope so, because if not, i'm losing my bet," she says, laughing.

"oh, okay, that's cute," i say, smiling.

"do you have a boyfriend?" aidan asks, completely out of the blue.

i pause for a second before answering. "kind of. he was about to be my boyfriend, but i don't think that's happening anymore since i moved here," i say, shrugging.

the group gives me these sympathetic looks, but honestly, i'm just trying not to feel out of place. maybe ice cream will make this whole "new school, new people" thing easier.
