We've all heard of empathy, which is the ability to understand someone's emotions. But what is an empath?
No one knows what causes some people to be highly attuned to others' emotions, and science tends to be divided on this issue. The research that has been done on this notion suggests that empaths may have more "mirror neurons" in their brain. Mirror neurons may help empaths mirror the emotions of those they come in contact with.
How can you determine if you are an empath?
There isn't exactly a test to tell you if you're an empath, but you can ask the following questions to determine if you might be one:
‣ Do you find yourself taking on others' stress?
‣ Have you been accused of being too sensitive in the past?
‣ Do you feel overwhelmed in crowded spaces?
‣ Would others describe you as empathetic?
If you answered yes to most of these questions, chances are you might be an empath. Ultimately, it's up to you to determine if you are an empath since there are no criteria for whether or not you're an empath.
