As we walk threw the mall to the apple store. Steve looks over his shoulder constantly.
"Keep looking over your shoulder and somebody will notice." I say trying to ignore the pain from falling.
"yeah, yeah I'm just looking out for us."
We reach the store and we walk to a random laptop away from people. And I put in the flash drive.
"We have about 9 minutes before they find us." I say trying to hack into the system
"Well then we better hurry." Steve says eyeing the store.
I hacked into the security system.
"This is a program that Shield developed to track hostile malware, so if we cant read the file, maybe we can find were its from." I say doing my best to find something.
Steve turns around and flinches as a long hair apple employee comes up to him. The man smiles with friendliness. "Can I help you guys with anything?"
"Oh, no my Husband and I are just trying to find some honeymoon destinations." I say spontaneously putting my arm around Steve. He is slightly taken aback and I instantly regret everything I said.
"Congratulations! Where are you guys thinking of going?" the employee asks curiously.
"New Jersey." Steve answers looking at the screen and blocking the employee's view. the employee suddenly narrows his eyes at Steve and stares at him.
"I have the exact same glasses." the man says leaving Steve in relief.
"Wow you two are practically twins." I comment monotonously.
The employee laughs "Yeah, i wish." he raises his hand admiring Steve. 'Specimen. uh.. well if you guys need anything I'm Aaron."
Steve nods and we go back to the laptop. I find the location and Steve and I both share a look. I remember the location briefly, it was were Steve trained to be a Soldier. I remove the flash drive and shove it in my pocket.
"We have to go Hydra should already be here." I say as I walk away Steve follows.
We walk out the store and a standard tac-team faces us walking towards us, Two behind us and two in front of us. "Put your arm around me, and laugh at something I said."
"What?" Steve frowns in confusion, I mouth the words "NOW!" And he quickly does as I say, He lets out a forced giggle. The tac team just walks past us. 'it worked." Steve said
As me and Steve make our way down the escalator, I notice Rumlow on the other side coming to us. "Shit." I mumble. Steve notice and looks at Rumlow.
'What now?" He says referring to the people around. There is no way out. I have to think of something quick, something that would make people look away, then it comes to me, I don't have anytime to think of anything else.
"I'm sorry." I say turning around to face Steve i scrunch up my face at the thought of what I'm about to do. Steve is about to say something but I pull in his face and kiss him. I can tell Steve is shocked and surprised. The kiss was bad, but it was awkward, he is my best friend. When Rumlow is gone I let go and begin to walk away.
"Apology accepted." Steve says as he Follows me.
***
The car ride was embarrassingly silent. I really imagined that my first kiss in this century was going to go down like that, especially with Steve.
We eventually get to the military base were Steve used to train. We find nothing but nostalgia. I look Steve he is staring at a bunker. "What's wrong?"
"Army regulation forbid storing ammunition within hundred yards from the barracks. This building is wrong place." He says as he walks over to the Bunker, we notice the lock and he uses his Shield to break it open. It pretty dark inside and everything is coated in dust. We reach the wall where old framed portraits are hanging , back and white photos from the forties. We walk further down a hall and stop by a massive shelf.
"If you already work in a secret office..." he pushes the shelf and slides it open to reveal an elevator. "Why do you need to hide the elevator."
We down the elevator which takes us down to an old familiar looking computer room. The yellow lights turn on as we walk into the room. I notice a data point. I also notice the more modern looking flash drive point, and I put in the flash drive.
"Initiate system?" The computer voice asks. I hesitate and look at Steve before typing yes.
The voice suddenly turns into a thick accent which sounds familiar and a camera moves about us analyzing our faces. "Rogers, Steven. Born 1918. Beckett, Nicole. Born 1919."
"What kind of recording is this?" I ask Steve who is frowning at the camera
"I am not a recording. I may not be the man i was when the Captain and you took me prisoner in 1945, but I am." The German accent responds and a picture of a man shows up on the screen, something inside of me makes me want to blow this place but. that man did something to me... To someone.
"You died decades ago, so turn off the damn program." Steve says tightening his grip on his shield.
"Look around you Captain. I have never been more alive. In 1972, I received a terminal illness. Science could not save my body, my mind however, that was worth saving on two hundred thousand feet of data banks. Your are standing in my brain."
"How did you get here." I ask, narrowing my eye with mistrust.
"Invited. It was Operation Paper Clip after WW II. Shield recruited German scientists with strategic values. They thought I could help their cause. I also helped my own." Zola tells us.
'Hydra died with Red skull." Steve spits out.
"Cut off one head, two more shall take its place." Zola says.
"Hydra was founded on the thought that humanity could not be trusted with it freedom. What we did not realise, was that if you try to take that freedom, they resist. The war taught us many things,. After the War Shield was founded and i was recruited. The new Hydra grew. A beautiful paradise for Shield. For seventy years Hydra was been secretly feeding crisis, reaping War. And when history did not cooperate, history was changed. The computer shows us scenes of a Soldier dressed in Black with long brown hair and a metal arm. The Winter Soldier. Hydra Killed Fury.
"Your lying. Shield would have noticed." I say
"Accidents will happen." Suddenly the article about Howards death appears on screen. Hydra killed him and Maria. It wasn't an accident it was murder. "Didn't The Red Skull promise to make Stark pay for your experiment. Well, we won. your deaths amount to the same as your lives: a zero sum.
"You son of a bitch!" I yell as I Throw a plasma ball at the monitor blowing it up.
"As I was saying..." he continues on another screen.
"What's on this drive." Steve asks.
"Project Insight requires insight. So I wrote an algorithm.
"What kind of algorithm, what does it do? " I ask clenching my teeth.
The door behind us suddenly closes, Steve tries to stop it by throwing his Shield but he misses. We're now Stuck.
"The answer to your question is fascinating. unfortunately, you two will be too dead to hear it." Zola shows us how missiles are on their way to the military base were in. I roughly removed the flash drive and throw a Plasma ball at the rest of the computers.
Steve sees a small opening on the ground. The only way we can survive. He takes of the metal cover and grabs me and jumps inside as the missiles attack the base. The explosion deafens my hearing and something hits my head. Hard. And then it all goes black.
