Finally, the bell rang, signaling the end of the day. I bolted from my seat, barely waiting for my teacher to dismiss us. "See you guys later!" I called to my friends, waving as I dashed out of the classroom.
As I made my way home, my heart raced with each step. I could picture Daichi's warm smile and the way his eyes sparkled when he saw me. I arrived home, dropped my backpack on the floor, and took a moment to catch my breath, a grin spreading across my face.
Before long, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to find Daichi standing there, slightly out of breath but grinning from ear to ear. He had changed out of his gym clothes and into a comfortable t-shirt and jeans, his hair still damp from the shower.
"Hey! Sorry, did I keep you waiting?" he asked, stepping inside and closing the door behind him.
"Not at all! I just got here myself," I replied, gesturing for him to sit down. "Want something to drink? I have water, juice, or soda."
"Juice sounds great," Daichi said, settling on the couch while I headed to the kitchen. I poured two glasses of juice and brought them back, handing one to him before plopping down beside him.
"So, ready to tackle some homework?" I asked, trying to keep my excitement in check. It was funny how homework felt more like a date when I was with Daichi.
"Only if you promise to keep it fun," he replied with a teasing smile. "I'm pretty sure I'm only here for your company, not math problems."
I laughed, taking a sip of my juice. "Deal! But you better focus, or I might have to bribe you with snacks."
"Snacks? Now you're speaking my language!" Daichi leaned back, a playful smirk on his face.
After gathering our books and materials, we began working on our assignments. I noticed Daichi glancing at me more than he focused on the math problems. "Hey, are you actually doing your homework, or are you just here to distract me?" I teased, raising an eyebrow.
"I'm definitely doing my homework," he replied, his gaze softening as he looked at me. "But I can't help it if you're incredibly distracting."
We both burst into laughter, and I felt my cheeks flush at his compliment. The casual banter flowed effortlessly between us as we tackled equations and theories, sharing glances and smiles that made the mundane task of studying feel special.
At one point, I leaned over to see his notes, our shoulders brushing against each other. "How do you always make this stuff look so easy?" I asked, frowning at my own paper.
"I don't know," Daichi said, grinning. "Maybe I just have a knack for it. Or maybe I just want to impress my brilliant girlfriend."
"Flattery will get you everywhere," I replied, nudging him playfully. "But I really need your help with this. Can you explain this problem to me again?"
As he leaned closer, explaining the concepts patiently, I couldn't help but admire the way his eyes sparkled with enthusiasm. The warmth of his presence enveloped me, and I found myself lost in the moment.
"Got it?" he asked, finishing up his explanation.
"Yeah, I think so! Thanks, Daichi." I smiled at him, feeling grateful for his support.
Just then, the doorbell rang, interrupting our study session. "I'll get it," I said, standing up. I opened the door to find a few of Daichi's teammatesβAsahi, Nishinoya, and Tanakaβstanding there, looking a bit surprised.
"Hey! We didn't know you were here!" Nishinoya exclaimed, bouncing on his heels with excitement.
"Yeah, we were just about to head out for ice cream. You two want to come?" Tanaka asked, grinning widely.
I glanced back at Daichi, who looked conflicted. "What do you think?" he asked me. "We could use a break, but I also want to finish this homework..."
"Let's go! We can finish the homework later," I said, feeling a burst of energy. "Ice cream sounds way more fun!"
Daichi chuckled, the tension easing from his shoulders. "Alright, you win. But we'll have to make sure to finish our assignments later."
"Of course! Homework can wait for ice cream," I said, grabbing my jacket.
As we stepped outside, I felt the warm breeze against my skin. The moment was perfect, the sun slowly setting in the background, painting the sky in hues of pink and orange. Walking side by side with Daichi, I felt a sense of happiness that I never wanted to end.
As we walked toward the nearby ice cream shop, I found myself laughing and teasing with the team, feeling fully integrated into the lively banter that surrounded me. Daichi walked beside me, our hands brushing against each other before he finally intertwined his fingers with mine, a simple act that sent a thrill through my heart.
At the ice cream shop, we all ordered our favorite flavors. I opted for strawberry, while Daichi went with chocolate, as usual. The playful banter continued as we sat outside, enjoying our treats and sharing stories about past matches and embarrassing moments on the court.
"Remember that time Daichi tripped over his own feet during practice?" Asahi said, trying to stifle his laughter.
"Hey! That was one time!" Daichi defended, his face turning slightly red. "I had something in my eye, okay?"
Nishinoya howled with laughter. "Yeah, sure! Blame it on your eye! But seriously, that was legendary!"
I joined in on the laughter, loving the easy camaraderie of the team. As the jokes continued to fly, I couldn't help but lean into Daichi, who smiled down at me, his expression softening as the sunlight caught his features.
"Thanks for being here," he said quietly, his voice almost drowned out by the laughter around us. "I love sharing these moments with you."
"Me too," I replied, leaning in closer, feeling the warmth radiating from him. "I wouldn't trade it for anything."
As the sun dipped below the horizon, we finished our ice cream, the night stretching out ahead of us. With our hearts full and our spirits high, I knew that this was just the beginning of more adventures togetherβboth on and off the court.
