The five of you were taken to Mama Odie's place, a shipwreck that had somehow found itself nestled between the branches of a huge moss-covered tree. Rickety stairs lined the trunk, circling all the way to the top, where golden light spilled out of the holes in the wood and collided with the humid air of the swamp.
Tiana started the conversation. "We're so glad we found you, Mama Odie," she said, relieved. "Ray and Louis here have been telling us all about you." The ragtag group of animals followed the old woman as her feet slapped against the wooden floor. She threw her club to the side, and it clattered with the junk that seemed to fill the space.
Although you weren't sure she was listening, you picked up where Tiana left off. "We've been traveling quite a long way, and you can't imagine what we've been through. And we-" You stopped in your tracks, making Naveen collide with your back. "Sorry," you mumbled softly as you both watched a pair of eyes in a jar turn to look at you.
"Do not worry," he replied, nudging you forward.
"A-and we heard that you-"
You were cut off as the blind woman called out, "Juju!" A snake came down from the ceiling, and Mama Odie turned to it. "Come on over here, you bad boy." The pair pressed their cheeks together and shared a moment, however it baffled you and your friends. "Give us a little sugar, now." They shared a couple of wet kisses, strings of saliva flying into the air. You all just sat there, looking at the pair of them, mouths slightly agape. Louis gagged quietly.
The woman pulled her pet to her chest. "Y'all just loves your mama, don't you?" All of a sudden, she pulled on the reptile, straightening him out into a walking cane. She banged Juju's head on the ground to guide herself, but turned around and began speaking as she walked. "Good to see you again, Ray. How's your grandmama?"
The bug waved his hand passively and let out a giggle. "She's fine. Got in a little trouble for flashing the neighbors again."
Mama Odie eased into her large peacock-style wicker chair, which had several candles and light-filled bottles dangling around it. She let out a hearty laugh and said, "ooh, I like that gal's spunk!"
"Mama Odie," you said, taking your friends with you as you hopped up to her armrest. "We don't want to take up too much of your time-"
"Y'all want some candy?" She interrupted, holding out her hand to reveal a key, a couple of buttons, some beans, and lint. A moth flew out of her hand as well.
Naveen stuttered respectfully, before saying "not really."
"No, thank you." Tiana said.
The woman grabbed one of the items--a piece of candy that looked older than her--and popped it in her mouth. "Now, that's too bad," she said. "It's a special candy. Would've turned you three human."
You turned to look at Naveen with wide eyes, and he returned your look.
"Wait! Don't! Please don't take it!"
"No! Please!"
"I'm sorry, I didn't know!" You three stood up and tried to stop her, but she just laughed.
"I'm just messing with y'all." She said giddily.
Tiana asked, "How on Earth did you know that we wanted to turn back..." as you smiled at each other, Tiana trailed off. Soft snores interrupted the conversation as Mama Odie slumped over in her chair, asleep.
Naveen approached her. "Um," he tapped on her sunglasses. "Mama Odie?"
The woman woke up with a start and stood up out of her chair, startling the prince. "Juju!" She called, rushing over to an overflowing bathtub, "why didn't you tell me my gumbo was burning?" She scrambled around, grabbing things to save her food.
Louis turned to Ray. "You sure this is the right blind voodoo lady who lives in a boat in a tree in the bayou?"
"Pretty sure," the bug replied, shrugging.
You hopped down to the cushion where Naveen sat, dazed, and pulled him up by his forearm. You dusted him off as he looked down at you with a small smile. "Thank you very much."
"Don't worry about it," you replied gently. You both joined Tiana, going over to the edge of the bathtub.
"Can't believe this," the woman said as she stirred, "got to do everything around here."
Tiana tried to start over with "Mama Odie," but was cut off yet again as a wrinkled hand was shoved in her face.
"Taste this!" Tiana swallowed the stew. "Well?"
"It's missing something, but I can't quite place what exactly. Now, can we-"
"You too, sugar!" Mama Odie fed you some gumbo forcefully as well.
"It needs Tabasco, Tia." Your best friend hummed thoughtfully as you turned to the blind woman. "Hit it hard with a couple of spoonfuls and it's the bee's knees. If I could just ask-"
"Juju!" Mama Odie turned to the side as Juju appeared over her other shoulder. He shook the bottle of sauce in his mouth, pouring some into the gumbo before disappearing.
Mama Odie tasted the gumbo and licked her fingers. She jumped around excitedly. "That's got some zang to it! That's just what it needed." Tiana put her face in her hands as you sighed, frustrated. "Now, y'all figure out what you need?"
You looked up at her. "It's just like you said, Mama Odie. We need to be human." Naveen nodded along with you, placing his hand on the small of your back. The woman shouted out, scaring the three of you. You tripped over Naveen behind you, almost falling into the pot, when he grabbed you and pulled you up. He pulled you to his side and looped an arm around your waist so you wouldn't fall again, and you looked up at him gratefully. "Y'all ain't got the sense you was born with!" Mama Odie ranted. "Y'all want to be human, but you're blind to what you need!"
Naveen was confused. "What we want? What we need? Is all the same thing, yes? Ow!" Mama Odie hit him over the head with a stick.
"Is the same thing? No!" She began to walk away before turning back to the three of you. "You listen to your mama now." She began to dance with Juju as she sang.
Don't matter what you look like,
Don't matter what you wear.
How many rings you got on your finger?
We don't care, no, we don't care!
Don't matter where you come from,
Don't even matter what you are.
Her magic club appeared out of thin air, and she turned Juju into the animals she began to list.
A dog, a pig, a cow, a goat,
We've had 'em all in here!
Several birds flew in through the open roof of the shipwreck and started dancing with Mama Odie.
And they all knew what they wanted,
What they wanted me to do.
I told 'em what they needed,
Just like I be telling you.
You gotta dig a little deeper,
Find out who you are.
You gotta dig a little deeper,
It really ain't that far.
She pulled a clam from a chest and opened it to show the three of you. Inside was a perfect white pearl, reflecting three green faces. While you and Tia looked at it in fascination, Naveen turned to look at you. As she pulled it away, and you felt eyes on you. You turned, seeing the prince already staring at you, and he smiled cutely.
When you find out who you are,
You'll find out what you need.
Blue skies and sunshine,
Guaranteed.
You gotta dig!
You gotta dig!
She pulled Naveen off to the side.
Prince Froggy is a rich little boy,
You want to be rich again?
That ain't gonna make you happy now,
Did it make you happy then? No!
Fake golden coins started to pour from her hands, smothering the poor prince.
Money ain't go no soul,
Money ain't got no heart.
All you need is some self control,
Make yourself a brand new start.
You gotta dig a little deeper,
Don't have far to go.
As soon as Naveen had disappeared, he was plucked from the pile and set on top of a crate by the old lady. She gestured from where they sat to where you and Tiana were, hopping and dancing together with grins on your faces. As Naveen came to some sort of realization, he dropped the gold coin he was holding, and it clattered to the floor.
You gotta dig a little deeper,
Tell the people Mama told you so.
Can't tell you what you'll find,
Maybe love will grant you peace of mind.
Dig a little deeper and you'll know.
He melted as your eyes met. You blushed and waved at him bashfully. He waved back, still dazed. Mama Odie left him to think and pulled you from your best friend.
Now, you're following all your dreams,
But are they truly yours?
Once you follow your own heart,
It'll open up some doors.
You gotta dig a little deeper,
After what you've been through.
You gotta dig a little deeper,
Don't let them tell you what to do!
Accept the love that you deserve,
You'll be surprised at what you'll find.
Maybe what this froggy needs
Is a certain prince to change her mind!
She poked you in the chest gently, but you stumbled backward. You were stopped by something sturdy, and you turned to see that you had run into Naveen. Both of you laughed and smiled as he pulled your hands into his and began twirling you around. Mama Odie moved on to address Tiana.
"Miss Froggy," she hovered over the frog, "might I have a word? You's a hard one, that's what I heard." She brought her over to the edge of the bathtub, which was steaming from the heat of the gumbo inside. The rich scent of spices was emulating from it, and belts of steam arose into the cool night. As Mama Odie touched the stew's surface, images of Tiana's childhood appeared.
Your daddy was a loving man,
Family, through and through.
You your daddy's daughter,
What he had in him, you got in you.
She scooped you and Tiana up and brought you to the crow's nest that had been turned into an elevator, bringing you up into the tree.
You gotta dig a little deeper,
For you, it's gonna be tough.
You gotta dig a little deeper,
You ain't dug nearly far enough.
Dig down deep inside yourself,
You'll find out what you need.
Blue skies and sunshine,
Guaranteed.
Spanish moss hung everywhere, and the birds pulled it apart to reveal something magical. Colorful glass bottles were hung from the branches, and rays of light hit them, basking the scene in spots of pink, blue, purple, and orange. The light was golden, and it shone brightly. It was an ethereal scene. "Open up the windows!" The old lady called. "Let in the light, children!
Blue skies and sunshine,
Blue skies and sunshine.
Mama Odie picked you up and put you on her hat. Arms wide, you sang with your full chest, "Blue skies and sunshine." Naveen looked on, purely amazed and dazzled with a huge grin. Tiana was next to him, smirking proudly, and she elbowed him and gave him a knowing wink. He broke his gaze and chuckled at her.
Guaranteed.
