Chief of Surgery

"Explain." Dr Bailey demanded when they arrived into her office.

No one made a move, no one daring to make a sound. Reagan opened his mouth as if to say something but no words came out. There was a long pregnant pause.

"He was crashing. Olivia saved him. That was it." Tatum explained again after a deafening silence.

"Of course, of course." Bailey shook her head. "Why was a code not called? Why did you not page your attending?" She raised her voice, furious.

"We thought we could handle it ourselves." Reagan jumped in.

"You thought? Thought? There is no room for mistakes in this programme. You are lucky that Mr Anson is still alive right now. If not, we'll have a lawsuit on our heads thanks to you goofballs!" At this point, Dr Bailey was shouting. "What were all of you thinking?"

She shook her head and finally continued, "You are all on probation for two weeks. In that period of time, you are not allowed into any surgeries. Not even in the viewing gallery. You will not handle pre-op or post-op patients. It's only your first day and this is the mess you've got yourselves into. I think. Think. That was a bad play on all of your parts. Think about it."

"But I saved him!" Olivia whined to her, a bold move.

"But did you page Dr Grey? No. I thought so." Dr Bailey shot back. "Get out of my office."

The three of them scurried out of the room, perhaps relieved that the consequence handed out wasn't nearly as bad as they expected.

"Please do me a favour and not get yourselves into any more trouble like that. I've had enough of this." Meredith sighed. "If you have time to pull things like that, I bet you have ample of time to do some charts and run labs."

"Tatum, go run these blood-works. Please keep yourselves out of everything and I do not want to see anyone even close to the operating room. For everyone's sake, please just be invisible and keep to the things your supposed to do." She shot them a deathly glare. "Olivia, you're with me." Meredith said as she pushed a pile of charts to Reagan for him to finish.

Cafeteria - Hour 28

"Who here feels like they have no idea what they're doing." Reagan asked the group of interns. Hour 28. 8 more hours till this hell is over. 14 more days until the probation they got themselves into is over.

"Me." Olivia muttered. They all raised their hands synchronisingly.

"By the way, thanks Reagan. You could have saved us all of this if you just paged Grey and called a code." Tatum was infuriated with Reagan, her face red.

"You know, you're welcome." Reagan smirked. After all of this mess, he still had some humour left to spare at least.

*Everyone's pager beeps*

Patients room - Rounds

"Parker." Meredith motioned for herto start.

"Mrs. Shulz, she came in with seizures..." Parker recited out like a well rehearsed script.

"And what are we going to do next?" Everybody's hand shot up, like an eager child waiting for their turn at the playground.

She called out, "Luca." Everyone else dropped their hands back down, disappointed at their missed chance to speak.

"We... we should get an EEG first." Luca stumbled out the words.

"Alright, then." With that, Meredith walked out of the room, leaving the interns confused on what to do next.

"What are you waiting for?" Meredith tilted her head at the interns, in question. They stood rooted to the ground but finally broke into a walk trailing after her.

*Meredith's pager beeps*

"There's incoming trauma." Meredith looked at her pager. "Luca, Mrs. Shulz is yours now. Get her an EEG and page me when you get the results. The rest of you, follow me."

Ambulance bay

"22 years old Female. Heart rate stable. Blood pressure 80 over 120. She got ran over by a car."
The paramedic said as they wheeled the patient in.

"I'm so sorry. I didn't see the lights change, I was thinking about other things. Is she going to be alright? I'm so sorry, I didn't mean it." A red-haired woman scrambled after them.

"I'll need to get a head CT and do an ultrasound to check for internal bleeding." Meredith spoke with an air of authority.

"Are you alright Ma'am? Let's get you a seat. We'll take care of her." Meredith consoled the panicking woman.

"I'm really sorry. It was an accident. I really didn't mean it. Please tell me she'll be alright. This is my fault." The woman broke down into tears. She was clad in a red shirt and skinny jeans with her hair pulled up into a ponytail. She seemed to be in her 40s.

Trauma One

"On my count. One. Two. Three." They lifted the patient from the stretcher.

"She's pregnant?" Meredith was shocked upon seeing the results of the ultrasound.

"Page Dr Bailey. We need Addison Montgomery here." Meredith looked at her interns. Olivia hurriedly paged Bailey.

"Oh. What. Oh my gosh!" Dr Bailey was flabbergasted upon the sight of the ultrasound results.

"Addison is in New York. She won't get here in time. Meredith, we have great surgeons here too. We don't need Addison here. We can handle this ourselves." Bailey said after recovering from the shock.

"Still give her a call. Maybe she'll make it. Page Karev." Meredith insisted. Once again, Olivia hurriedly paged Alex.

"Yes? I have a surgery I want to get to." Alex Karev rushed through the doors.

"You're good at C-sections. Right? You'll have to cut her open. We're still trying to get Addison." Meredith instructed.

"I have another surgery. You'll have to wait for Addison." Karev left.

"Karev!" Meredith shouted after him.

"Addison will get here. I need to go." Alex looked back for a split second and rushed off.

Chief of Surgery

"Miranda!" Addison's voice sounded through the phone.

"Addison! You free for a flight back to Seattle? We'll love to have you back for a case." Bailey requested.

"I'd love to come back. When's the flight?"

"We can't wait much longer. There's a flight in two hours."

"Then you'll be seeing me in a bit."

Trauma one

"Is Addison coming? We can only wait a few hours more hours." Meredith rushed.

"She'll be on a flight in two hours. That's our best shot. This injury is too extensive. We'll have to get her baby out if we even want to save a life." Bailey replied.

"Olivia. You'll have to stay here and watch her. If there are any significant changes, page me. She's yours now." Meredith instructed. "Rest of you, follow me, there's more trauma coming."

Trauma three

"Could I get a hand? He's aorta burst. We need to get him to surgery. Clear OR one." Meredith shouted. Tatum rushed forward.

"Heart rates dropping." Tatum stated.

"Tatum. Hold this. Do not let go until I say clear." Meredith gestured at the piece of bright red gauze, the last barrier between the patient's aorta and open air.

"We need a crash cart in here! Charge to 200. Clear!" To no avail, the patient's heart rate continued to drop.

"Charge 360. Clear!"

*Flatlines*

"Time of death, 15.18." Meredith declared. She pulled off her latex gloves and walked off.

Entrance - Hour 32

Four more hours. 14 more days. They'll make it through, won't they?

"Addison! So glad to have you back!" Meredith hugged Addison.

"Oh! Feels good to be back. But don't get used to it, I won't be here for long. Just one case and I'm going back to New York." Addison smiled.

"Here. Here's your coat. Have some fun while you're back." Bailey told Addison.

Intensive Care Unit

"Oh. Wow. I rarely see something as bad as this. Book OR two. We're delivering the baby today." Addison directed.

They wheeled the patient out of the room and into the elevator.

Elevator

"Hi, I'm Tatum. You must be Dr Montgomery. I've heard loads of good things about your work. You're want of the best in the nation. It's a pleasure to meet you!" Tatum basically recited it.

"The pleasure is all mine." Addison replied.

"She sounds familiar, doesn't she. Just like Christina." Addison chuckled.

"Always fighting their way to the top. Interns." Meredith laughed.

"Is she assisting me?" Addison asked.

"Nope. None of the interns have had their first surgery yet. She's on probation too." Meredith replied.

"Could I still have her? I'd love to have her on my service." Addison insisted.

"That's your call to make." Meredith chuckled.

"Well, I guess you'll be the lucky intern then." Addison laughed.

"It would be a pleasure. Thank you." Tatum beamed.

Operation Room Two

"On my count we lift her over. One. Two. Three." Addison instructed.

They lifted the patient up onto the cold operating table and proceeded to scrub in.

"Thank you, Dr Montgomery. It's really such a pleasure to be here." Tatum thanked profusely.

"Show me the best you've got. You'll be an excellent surgeon one day." Addison praised.

"Thank you. My bonus mother said I'll be extraordinary one day and I hope to live up to that." Tatum smiled.

"It's a beautiful day to save lives people, let's begin." Addison said. Meredith heart throbbed upon hearing that. Her heart beat for Derek. But Derek's gone now, this is all she has left.

"Scalpel." Bokhee handed Addison the 10 blade. Addison proceeded to do a low-transverse incision on the soon-to-be mother.

In a few minutes, the baby was out. Premature, but still as healthy as a mother could wish for.

"Let's get the baby up to the ICU." Addison instructed.

"Tatum, would you like to close her up for me?" Tatum stares wide-eyed at Addison, surprised at the offer.

"Are you alright, Tatum? Would you like to close her up for me? We can't leave her lying here for the rest of the day, can we? She'll have to recover and get fixed up, I've never seen a pregnant lady so badly injured before." Addison repeated her question.

"Yes. Yes! I would love to close her up. Sorry, I was shocked. It wouldn't happen again." Tatum apologised.

Tatum proceeded to stitch her up and everything was smooth sailing.

*Beep. Beep. Beep.*

"Her heart rates dropping. Could I get a crash cart?" Meredith shouted.

"Charging to 150." The nurse shouted.

"Clear!"

"Charge to 200. Clear!"

*Flatlines.*

"Time of death, 16.35." Meredith sighed.

"This baby will have to grow up without a mother. Is there any contacts we can contact?" Addison shook her head.

"Her mother's a Jane Doe. No one would be able to recognise her mother in that state." Meredith answered.

Outside of operation room

"You did quite a good job closing her up, Tatum. Her bleeding most probably worsened during the operation." Addison commented.

"Thank you." Tatum smiled.

"You did well in there. Especially with the chaos. Congratulations. You've made it through your first shift. Go home and get some rest." Meredith told her.

Walking out of the hospital, Tatum's emotions were in turmoil. She was the first intern to assist on a surgery. She saved a life but lost one. Yet the attendings were still praising her? Is this even enough? She tried, but failed. Maybe she'll get through it.
