Claire and her grandsons sprint down the stairs to Stephen's room. They find the elder man trapped underneath a cabinet as Cherry tries to lift it off him.
"Get this goddamn thing off me!" Stephen groans.
"Help me!" Cherry exclaims, moving the boys into action. Sean does his best to help Cherry lift the heavy piece as Claire and Daniel try to pull him out from under.
"NO!!" Stephen yells. "Stop! My legs!" he cries in agony. Despite the effort the teens make in lifting the cabinet it's no use.
"Sean? Can I...?" Sean glances behind him and spots the look on his brother's face immediately.
"Do it, Daniel!" Sean yells. As soon as he does, Daniel holds his hand out, and a concentrated look forms on his face. The cupboard rattles for a moment before it's lifted into the air, giving Cherry and Sean the chance to drag Stephen out from underneath. As soon as Stephen is out of the way, Daniel drops the cupboard with a bang, before falling to his knees in utter exhaustion. As Claire moves towards Stephen, the teens move to Daniel. Cherry holds him while Sean asks, "Are you okay, enano?"
"Yeah. I'm just tired."
"You did good, mi amor," Cherry tells him, giving him a quick squeeze.
"What in the name of God was that all about?" The three look over, finally noticing the look of disbelief on Claire's face. "That's impossible. What are you, Daniel?!"
"They saved me, Claire. That's all that matters," Stephen says. Claire's expression goes from disbelief to disbelief with a dash of gratitude.
"Maybe... it was a miracle. Thank you, Lord."
"Maybe thank Daniel-" A doorbell cuts off Cherry's words. Claire gets up to look out the window, a small gasp leaving her lips.
"It's the sheriff!" As soon as the words leave her lips, they hear the sheriff through the door.
"Stephen? Claire?" the sheriff calls for them. "It's about your grandsons and some friend of theirs."
"Sean... I didn't-" She takes a moment to gather herself. "We didn't call them, I swear."
"Someone called us. We know they've been here. They were spotted at the Christmas market earlier today." The two teens curse under their breaths.
"What are we going to do?!" Daniel asks, looking at the two.
"Go hide in the garage!" Stephen orders.
"What if the police search the house?" Cherry questions.
"If they do, that makes you two accomplices," Sean adds. The two pause before looking at each other. "You got the bags?"
"I'll be down in a minute. You just get ready."
"Go through the back door. I'll distract them," Claire tells them. Cherry nods her head before leaving the room and sprinting up the stairs. She stuffs everything into their bags as quickly as possible. She places her own on her back and carries the boy's. She moves as quietly as possible down the stairs. Her body tenses as she spots Claire talking to the sheriff and prays she doesn't step on a rickety board. Luckily, she doesn't, and she's able to slip through the kitchen to the backdoor. She tosses the boys their bags and forces her feet into her shoes. As the three step outside, they spot another cop car rolling down the hill towards their house.
"Shit! This way!" Sean yells. The three run towards Chris' yard and climb over the fence before a voice interrupts them.
"Daniel!" Chris exclaims from his tree house swing. "What's going on? You okay?"
"Hey, Chris! We have to leave right now." The sadness is evident in his voice.
"I knew you wouldn't stay," he sighs.
"Sorry. I wish we could. I'll try to come back," Daniel swears.
"You better. Hold on!" Chris quickly unties his cape, giving it to Daniel. "Here, this is your cape. You're the real superhero."
"Thanks, Chris. That's super cool. Like you."
"This is sweet, but we have got to go," Cherry says, hoping to speed this up. Sean goes to pull Daniel away before Chris speaks again.
"Take the Troll Forest shortcut. Nobody will find you, I swear!" he promises.
"Chris, you rock," Sean grins, giving him a pat on the head.
"You're my hero, bud," Cherry says, quickly hugging him.
"Goodbye, Captain Spirit." Daniel's still for a moment, but with a slight tug on his arm, he follows Sean and Cherry to the shortcut through the woods.
"See you around, Superwolf! The Spirit Squad will stay united forever!"
The boys drag their feet a bit further to sit on the log. Sean's feet and ankles aches from running through the forest for some time. Daniel is exhausted too, a tired sigh escaping his lips when he sits down. Cherry doesn't even get that far, laying down in the snow with a soft thud instead. A few moments of silence pass before Daniel says, "Cher, you okay?" The two watch as steam rises off her form.
"I'm okay. It's so nice," she sighs out.
"When did you know you were able to do that?"
"Just now," she admits. "Are you guys okay? Are you okay, mi amor?"
"No." She sits up partially, giving a look of concern, as does Sean. "I feel like a fake superhero. Chris was so sad when he found out."
"He had to find out anyway before he did something dangerous, Daniel. You know that," Sean reminds him.
"I know. I just feel sorry for him."
"Don't be," Cherry tells him, sitting up fully. "Because you told him, he didn't put himself in danger. You saved him. You're a good friend, Dani-boy."
"Yeah. I think you guys will always be friends," Sean adds, giving his brother a side hug.
"I hope so. But Sean, I'm tired of running away," he admits. "I don't want to be a superhero anymore."
"Me neither, mi amor. You don't have to use your power if you don't want to."
"I know, but... sometimes I can't help it. How do I know when to use it?"
"You don't," Sean admits, Cherry giving a hum of agreement. "You can only trust your guts. And listen to me and Cherry."
"You think we'll see Grandma and Grandpa again?"
"We'll see, enano." There's a pause as Daniel tries to find his words.
"Where are we going to go now? See Mom?"
"No way, man. We don't need her, okay?" Cherry's face scrunches at his words, but she keeps silent.
"But... But she said she wanted to find us!"
"We stick to the plan: we go to Puerto Lobos. That's where we belong. No one will tell us what to do. We can be whoever we want!"
"You think? I don't know."
"Trust me, man. From now on we make our own rules." There's a pause before Sean zips open his bag and digs through it. "Look, me and Cherry even got you a present. Merry Christmas, enano."
"Really?! But Christmas is in two weeks!"
"Who cares? Dates are boring! Here." His words get an eyeroll from Cherry before she lays back in the snow. She watches as Sean hands him the small stuffed bear they picked for him.
"Wow! It's super cute!" He hugs his brother as tight as possible. "Cherry. Can I give you a hug, too? I don't want to lay in the snow, though." A large grin forms on her face as she stands. Steam rises off her for a few more seconds, drying her clothes. Once it stops, she sits beside Daniel before hugging him. She plants a kiss on the top of his head before letting him go, the grin still on her face. "Early Christmas is the best!" he exclaims. "Hey, I got something for you guys too!" He digs into his own bag, pulling out two folded pieces of paper. "I wanted to finish it, but we're doing it now, so..." he trails off, giving the two their presents.
The two carefully unfold their pieces of paper and discover drawings of themselves. Sean is drawn as a superhero with a cape and 'Super Sean' written beside him. Cherry is drawn as a superhero as well, dressed in a cape while her hands are covered in flames. In Daniel's stereotypical scraggly handwriting, he wrote 'Super Cherry.'
"You didn't have to get me nothing, Dani," she says, giving him a small jab of her elbow.
"But you're like my sister." The words make her freeze for a moment. She glances at Sean, wondering if she heard right, before looking back at Daniel. "If I give Sean a gift, I need to give you one. It's only right," he shrugs like it's common sense. A beat of silence passes before Cherry gives him a side hug since she's unsure how to respond. Luckily, Daniel changes the subject. "Hey. Listen." The three do, hearing the sound of the train against the tracks.
"That's our ride. Come on," Sean says. The three pack their presents quickly before tossing their bags on their shoulders. "All aboard!" Daniel runs ahead, in awe at the size of the freight train this close. The teens try to catch up, but the look on Cherry's face grabs Sean's attention. "You okay, Cher?" Her eyes are glossy but bright as a wavering grin forms on her lips.
"He called me sister."
