adulthood ; stephanie always knew she wanted to help people, and being a cop was one way to do that. she also wanted to be a part of the system that was good, despite how much was wrong with it. while you don't have to have a college education to become a police officer, she wanted to know as much as she could, so she got a bachelors in criminal justice at university of california, berkeley. at 22 she moved to seattle for something new and joined the academy, passing with flying colors. stephanie worked hard after that, getting through rookie year and making sure she did everything right. one day she had suspicions about a cop being dirty, but she knew she had to have proof before making an accusation. stephanie spent months gathering information before presenting it to the watch commander. she was right about the entire thing, and they offered her the opportunity to become detective. of course she passed the exam, and everyone was happy for her.
recent; when she'd been on a stakeout, she was taken from her car and beaten, having been noticed by the people she was watching. it was three of them against her, but luckily she had been on the phone with someone from the office when it happened. it wasn't long before several cops showed up, arresting them and sending stephanie to seattle grace mercy west. she wasn't horribly injured, but she did have some bruising and a laceration on her cheek from one of the guys' rings. stephanie was strong though, so it was no surprise that she was fine and making jokes in the hospital, especially when alex karev came in to fix up her cheek. normally he was in pediatrics, but things were a bit slow so he was asked to help down in the er. it was pretty deep, but having originally looked into plastics, it wasn't hard for him to fix up. the two really hit off, so it wasn't the last time they saw each other

; they met when he fixed up her cheek after a bad situation with a few criminals. she's tough though, so she managed to joke around and maybe flirt a little while he did it. she came in months later after he became a surgical fellow when a little girl had been in a car accident, her parents having passed so she stayed with the girl. of course she teased him about being a "real" doctor finally, though he's technically just a fellow. they decided to get a cup of coffee sometime then, and the rest is history
