It had been a quiet afternoon in their shared apartment. Taylor was sprawled out on the couch, her legs tucked under a cozy blanket, tapping away on her phone as she mindlessly scrolled through social media. The rain outside made everything feel more peaceful, and for once, she could just enjoy the quiet.
But that peace was about to be interrupted.
The front door creaked open, and Taylor looked up just in time to see Travis walk into the living room, his usual easy grin already spreading across his face. The second he entered, Taylor's heart skipped a beat. She loved when he came over. He made everything better, brighterβeven the rain didn't seem so dreary with him around.
"Hey, beautiful," he said, walking toward her with his arms open.
"Hey!" She smiled, sitting up a little and tossing her phone to the side. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her in for a quick kiss.
"You look good, as usual." He winked.
"And you're looking extra handsome today, as always," she teased. "What's the special occasion?"
"Just felt like visiting my favorite person." He dropped down beside her on the couch. She giggled, reaching for his hand.
"Well, I'm happy you're here," she said, resting her head on his shoulder. "I've missed you."
But before Travis could respond, he felt a familiar soft nudge against his leg. He looked down and saw the large, fluffy form of Meredith, Taylor's ever-so-charming (and sometimes too independent) cat, rubbing up against his jeans.
Travis raised an eyebrow. "I see we have a visitor."
Taylor laughed, running a hand through her hair. "That's Meredith. She loves you, but she's also a little... possessive."
"Possessive?" Travis chuckled. "She seems pretty chill to me."
"Oh, she's chill," Taylor said, trying her best to stifle a laugh. "Until she decides you're her person for the day."
And with that, Meredith jumped right into Travis's lap, curling up comfortably as if she owned the place.
"Okay, guess I'm not needed here," Taylor muttered dramatically, trying not to laugh as Meredith gave her a side-eyeβthe type of look only a cat could pull off.
"Hey!" Taylor protested playfully. "I thought we were hanging out!"
Meredith, however, was in her own world now, settled on Travis's lap and purring contently. The only acknowledgment she gave Taylor was the faintest flick of her tail.
"She's so dramatic," Taylor added, watching the scene unfold with a fond, exasperated smile. "Every time you come over, she does this."
Travis grinned, running a hand through Meredith's soft fur. "It's all good. She's a queen, and I'm just her loyal subject for the day."
Taylor rolled her eyes but couldn't help the smile that tugged at her lips. "I see how it is. I get ignored by my own cat, and youβ" She paused, dramatically pointing at Travis, "βyou let her get away with it."
"Of course I do," he said, looking down at Meredith, who was practically sitting on his face now. "Look at this little queen. How could I resist?"
And just as she thought he was starting to focus on her again, Meredith let out a low, triumphant meow, then settled even more comfortably into his lap, claiming his full attention.
"Okay, I get it," Taylor sighed, settling back against the armrest. "She's obviously more important than me today."
Travis glanced at Taylor, eyes twinkling with mischief. "You know, I wasn't the one who decided to start cuddling with a cat in front of me."
She groaned and leaned over to poke him in the ribs. "You're lucky I love you."
But as the minutes passed, Taylor couldn't help but laugh at how Meredith had totally taken over. The cat had no shame, giving Taylor a quick look as if to say, Sorry, not sorry.
Travis seemed to be thoroughly entertained, continuing to scratch behind Meredith's ears.
"I can't believe this," Taylor muttered, shaking her head in amusement. "I'm not even the jealous type, but Meredith's making me question everything. Does she ever give me attention like this?"
"Honestly?" Travis grinned, glancing at her, "Not that I've seen."
"Great," Taylor sighed dramatically. "I'm here, trying to be cute and stuff, and she gets all the attention."
"She's a cat. You know how they are." Travis smirked, eyes never leaving Meredith. "But hey, I'm still here. She can't have all the fun."
Taylor rolled her eyes. "I guess I'll just wait for her to finally leave you alone."
Meredith, apparently, had no intention of that anytime soon. Instead, she nestled deeper into Travis's lap and, just to be extra dramatic, gave Taylor the most nonchalant, disinterested stareβalmost like she was saying, You're still here?
"Do you think she knows she's driving me insane?" Taylor asked, half-laughing and half-exasperated.
"She knows exactly what she's doing," Travis said, looking down at Meredith with a grin. "And honestly? I think she's winning."
For the next few hours, the situation didn't change. Travis was stuck playing second fiddle to Taylor's feline companion, who refused to leave his lap. It didn't matter how many times Taylor gave Meredith a pointed look, or how many times she tried to snuggle up next to TravisβMeredith was determined to steal the show.
Eventually, Travis did manage to pry Meredith off his lap long enough for him and Taylor to share a quick kiss. "You know, I do love you, but this catβ" He shook his head in disbelief. "She's got some serious competition skills."
Taylor grinned. "I know, right? Maybe I should take notes from her."
"Please don't," Travis said with a chuckle. "I'm just gonna need a few more minutes before she's back on my lap again."
And sure enough, after a few more minutes of conversation, there she wasβMeredith, back in her spot on his lap, giving Taylor the same very pointed look.
"Unbelievable," Taylor muttered, but the smile on her face was soft, affectionate. "I guess I just gotta accept that today... you're Meredith's human."
"I think I'm okay with that," Travis said, his hand gently scratching behind Meredith's ears. "She's pretty great."
"Yeah," Taylor agreed, laughing lightly. "She's greatβwhen she's not taking all of my attention."
But despite the playful jealousy, Taylor couldn't help but love the way Travis and Meredith seemed to have formed their own little bond. She smiled, feeling warmth in her chest, knowing that, despite the occasional cat-induced interruptions, there was nothing she wouldn't do to keep both of them happy.
