Chapter Seventy-Four
π The Sword and The Spirit π
The elevator dings, and Sheriff turns to see Scott, Kira, Lydia and Stiles walling out of the elevator toward him but stop in their tracks and stare in horror at the line of orderlies continuing to wheel the bodies found in the sewers into the morgue. "Who found them?" Stiles asked as they walked up to his father.
"Argent. And he said the Doctors were down there. He also said you guys might know what this thing is." Stilinski said and Lydia nodded slightly, "We've got a theory..." Lydia said making Stiles nod in agreement. "It's a slightly terrifying theory..." He said and Stilinski sighed softly, "Well, the M.E. said that the victims were killed somewhere else and then dumped in those tunnels."
Stiles furrowed his brows and thought before a moment before realization crossed over his features, "Hey, what if the Dread Doctors are hiding the bodies?" He asked and Kira looked at him confused, "Why would they do that?" She asked and Stiles shrugged slightly. "Maybe they're covering for it. Protecting it, like a parent would." Stiles said.
"Protecting what?" Stilinski asked and they all glanced at each other, "A werewolf." Lydia said. "It's called the Beast." Kira said and Sheriff made a face at this and Stiles shrugs in understanding, "We know. Horrifying." He said and Stilinski sighed.
"We better figure out what we're gonna call Parrish... Because it looks like his dream is coming true."

Wren groaned in frustration before slamming her hands against the gate separating the general unit from the closed unit at Eichen House. Nora walks up to the gate separating them and gives her a stern look. "I said use your hands. I didn't say punch the gate." Nora said making Wren look at her, "Well sorry but it's all a little new to me, so don't hold back on specificity." Wren said.
"It's part of your psychometry. You can see past or future tragedies that's happened to the environment. And with that you can bring the effects forward and make them happen again. You can make them worse then they were or will be or you can make them weaker." Nora said before stepping back and nodded at Wren.
"Try again." She said and Wren raised her eyebrows, "How did you learn?" She asked and Nora smiled softly and shook her head. "It doesn't matter. You have to find your own way." She said and Wren sighed, "What if your way works for me, too?" She asked and Nora gave her a stern look.
"Wren, find your way." She said making Wren groan in frustration, "But none of this is even real! My body's lying in a room down the hall, staring at the ceiling!" Wren yelled. Nora gave her an exasperated look before her eyes clouded over and she slammed her hands against the gate. The building around them started shaking violently making Wren stumble back into a room before it all stopped.
She looked up at Nora who now stood in the doorway with a smirk. "Did that feel real?" Nora asked but before Wren could respond, Nora shuts the sliding glass door to the cell and locks it so Wren can't get out making Wren to look at her as if she's lost her mind.
"What are you doing?" Wren asked and Nora shrugged slightly, "You want out? Break the glass." She said and Wren looked at her in exasperation. "It's not just glass! It's bullet-resistant polycarbonate." Wren said and Nora just gave her a look, "So, make your abilities a bullet. Break the glass, Wren."
π
Walking down the hallway of the school, Scott glanced around as Sheriff's deputies walk around with huge, sophisticated shotguns while they listen to an announcement over the P.A. system. "By order of the Sheriff, a county-wide curfew goes into effect tonight at sundown. All after-school activities are canceled until further notice. Students should go directly home at the end of the school day."
Scott walked up to Stiles who was talking to one of the Deputies, "You don't think this is a bit much in terms of firepower for a high school?" Stiles asked. "Your dad's the one that issued us these things and he wouldn't officially say why." Deputy Strauss asked making Stiles pursed his lips and raise his eyebrows, "Did he say anything unofficially?" He asked.
"No... But everyone's got a theory." He said making them more curious, "What's yours?" Stiles asked and Strauss looked at him. "I shouldn't be talking to you guys. Don't you have class?" He asked and Stiles groaned slightly, "Come on, Strauss! What's your theory?" He asked and he sighed and looks around making sure that no one is looking at them talking before leaning forward and lowering his voice.
"Do you guys believe in the supernatural?" He asked making their eyes widen as they all look at each other.
π
Wren breathed heavily as she looked at her birth mother though the glass, "Nora, please. Tell me how you did it." Wren said and Nora sighed and shook her head. "You have to find your own way." She said and Wren furrowed her brows, "Why can't you just tell me yours?" She asked and Nora sighed softly.
"When I learned, people got hurt." Nora said making Wren furrow her brows slightly. Nora smiled sadly as she ran her fingers down the wall slightly before glancing at her daughter. "You know, some say that spirits go to place they suffered the most. It doesn't have to be the place they died." Nora said and Wren's eyes widened slightly.
"You were in Eichen House?" Wren asked and Nora nodded before smiling sadly at Wren, "I'm sure you noticed that where was a whole year in my journals where I didn't write anything?" She asked and Wren nodded slightly. "I thought that was because you were busy with college." Wren said and Nora shook her head slightly, "I never went to college." She said before sighing.
"It was seven months after my graduation... I was at work when a women left her purse. I grabbed to give it to her and I saw her die. She was going to come back for the purse, leave and then get hit by a car... She came back and I told her what I saw, she laughed at me and called insane then left. I saw the car coming and ran out and pulled her out the way. Instead of thanking me, she called Eichen and I got emmitted." Nora said and Wren raised her eyebrows slightly.
"What happened while you were in here?" She asked and Nora sighed, "There was an orderly who listened to the words of Gabriel Valack. He told him that if you drill a whole into a Seers head, their abilities will be strong. They'll be able to tell you everything you want to know about your future..." Nora said before shaking her head slightly.
"The orderly sedated me, took me to this room in the tunnels under the building. When I woke up I tried to fight him off until I suddenly started seeing visions of World War II. I saw a soldier get his head blown off. When it was over the orderly just dropped dead half his face looked like it was blown off. I apparently had also brought forward an earthquake that made bulletproof glass shatter in the building." She said before looking at Wren.
"Find a better way, Wren. My abilities was like a devastation, yours needs to be a defense mechanism. But you need to get out of this place. If Valack gets his hands on you and drills a hole in your head... It'll kill you and powers will take the whole building with you." Nora said and all of the sudden Wren saw flashes of shot gun shells falling to the ground.
"Did you see that?" Wren asked and Nora took a deep breath and nodded at something being Wren. Wren turned to follow Nora's line of sight and is horrified when she finds what appears to be Malia's coyote den outside of the far glass wall of her cell, where Malia is cowering and whimpering in fear as her back slides down the wall toward the floor. When Wren sees her, she immediately rushes toward where Malia is hiding though they are separated by a wall of the same bulletproof glass as the door.
"Malia? Malia!" Wren yelled as she pounded on the glass, watching in horror as a shadowy figure holding a shotgun slowly walks toward Malia, causing her to become even more frightened as she tries to crawl backward away from the person. When the figure moves out of the shadows, Malia's aggressor is quickly revealed to be the Desert Wolf.
"Is this real? Or is it in my head?" Wren asked and Nora looked at her with sympathy, "I think you know what a Seer premonition feels like." She said. Wren flinched slightly as the sound a gunshot, before looking back to see just how terrified Malia is by the sight of her mother coming toward her with her gun.
"She's going to die!"
π
Stiles sat next to Wren's bed, holding her hand and talking to her as her catatonic body continues to stare lifelessly at the ceiling.
"Your teachers, uh... gave us some of the stuff you guys have been working on. They wanted us to hold onto it for you. I saw something about the, uh, Riemann, poetry, screenwriting and a lot of other stuff that goes totally over my head." He said before looking at her, "Maybe you can wake up and explain it to me?" He asked hopefully.
When she made no response he sighed in frustration. "Oh, come on, Wren." He said in a slight whisper as he squeezed her hand, "You have to come back to us. There's no way we're getting through this without you. Wren, you have to wake up." He said. Just then, a very unhappy-looking Natalie appears
in the doorway with Lydia following as Natalie gave Stiles a displeased look.
"I think that's enough." Natalie said and Stiles sighed in frustration once again and stands up. He paused slightly when he's completely distracted when he sees a small bald patch on Wren's head where her hair has been shaved, and Natalie rolls her eyes in annoyance at his hesitation.
"Stiles-" She went to say but Stiles cut her off, "Wait a second..." He said before moving a lock of Wren's hair to the side to see a shaved patch of scalp on the side of Wren's head above her ear. "What is this? What are they doing?" Stiles asked as Lydia walked further into the room to look at her sister's head in confusion, "Mom, what is this?" She asked and Natalie sighed.
"All right, you need to go." Natalie said, looking at Stiles but he didn't move, "Look at it! Did you- Did you know about this? What are they gonna do? Drill a hole in her head?" Stiles asked making Lydia look at her mom alarmed while Natalie looked at Stiles crazy.
"Are you crazy? It's for ECT. Electroconvulsive therapy. They shave small portions of the scalp. It's done under general anesthesia and it's perfectly safe." Natalie said but both Stiles and Lydia didnt look convinced. "Look at her, Stiles. She's my daughter. You don't think I'm trying everything I can to bring her back?" She asked and Stiles shook his head.
"No, no, no, that's not ECT-" He started to say before Nurse Cross walked in, "Is everything all right in here?" She asked and Natalie nodded. "It's fine. Our guest is just leaving." She said and Stiles didn't move right away, "Stiles, go. Or you're not coming back." Natalie said.
Stiles glanced at Lydia who was giving her mother a disapproving look before Stiles sighed and walked out. Natalie looked over at Lydia before sighing softly as Nurse Cross went to take Wren to the showers, "What?" She asked and Lydia shook her head slightly. "You don't have to keep pushing him away. She's still his girlfriend, she'd want him to visit her." Lydia said making her mother sigh, "Lydia-" Natalie went to say but Lydia cut her off.
"No mom, I'm talking. Wren doesn't need this place. She needs a hospital with doctors who would actually care about her. Not the place that grandma was murdered in. Not the place that we were almost murdered in! She need to be able to be visited by her friends and her boyfriend. I mean- at least let her biological sister visit her. Her biological father's in here, does he know that she is too? Not that he deserves it but I'm sure he'd like to know." Lydia said and Natalie sighed and held her hand up slightly.
"I'm just doing what I think is going to help her." Natalie said and Lydia shook her head, "Well what you think is wrong. This place isn't going to help her, it's going to kill her!"
π
Wren stood under the hot stream of water while Nurse Cross watched from the door with an annoyed expression. "All right, you've had long enough. Let's go." She said but Wren didnt make any movement, "I'm not buying the catatonic act. So don't think that I'm going to drop my guard." She said. Wren remained silent and motionless, as though she's staring off into space. Nurse Cross rolled her eyes and continues to speak with her in an aggressive and irritated tone of voice.
"I know you can hear me." She said before walking over to Wren, "Look at me when I'm talking to you. I said look at me!" She said and the teen girl didnt move. "Wren!" Nurse Cross said before grabbing her face making Wren look at her with a deadened expression as if she wasn't completely there.
Wren's eyes widen in horror as she spins around the cell where she is still locked up by Nora. The fluorescent lights around her flicker as Nora looks at her with a stern, but supportive look. "Don't get lost, Wren." She said making Wren spin around at the sound of Nora's voice and turns to face her, her eyes filling with tears of frustration and fear.
"You can help them, but you have to get out of here first." Nora said and Wren shook her head slightly, "She's in trouble. I think it's happening now." Wren said. All of the sudden she started seeing flashed of Malia on the floor of an Army base, crying out in pain as she clutches her stomach. All the while, the Desert Wolf circles around her in a predatory fashion, "You know, your real name isn't Malia..." Wren's eyes widen as the vision ended, "Oh, God. She found her."
Wren fell to her knees in the cell and clutched her head with both hands. Nora looks anxious as well, but is doing her best to remain calm so she can continue to coach Wren through what she needs to do. "You can help her, Wren! Break the glass!" Nora said and Wren flips her hair back and looks up at Nora with determination in her eyes.
In the real world at Eichen House , Schrader pushed Wren catatonic face to the side as he raised the syringe.
Wren is panting deeply as she prepares to wake up, while Nora continues to yell instructions at her, "Break the glass, Wren!" She said as she lightly hit the glass while Wren stood up.
Wren took a deep breath before pressing her hands to the glass, closing her eyes as she started to see flashbacks of an earthquake that happened a few years ago. All of the sudden her cloudy eyes shot open as the room around her shook until the glass shattered making Nora smile proudly.
Wren suddenly bolted into a seated position with gasp as the room shook with such force that Schrader stumbled backward against the wall, the syringe in his hand clattering onto the floor as all of the lights in the closed unit explode in a shower of sparks and broken glass.
At Fort Jewett, the Desert Wolf rears her clawed hand back again in an attempt to kill Malia. All of the sudden the light fixture above Deaton's head exploded and the ground suddenly started shaking making the Desert Wolf stumble back from Malia.
At Eichen House, Wren wasted no time rushing out of her room and into the hallway of the closed unit, where two orderlies rush toward her from both gates. She stops halfway between the two unit doors and takes in the threat before deciding to rush forward, kicking the first orderly in the stomach and wrapping her legs around his neck while he's doubled over so she can pull him onto the ground.
She flipped her hair over her shoulders before standing to her feet when she sees the other orderly rushing toward her. Her eyes clouded over as she saw flashes of when he broke his leg when he was in highschool. The orderly cried out in pain as he fell to the ground, holding his now broken leg.
She forcefully kicked him in the face making him fall back before she made a beeline out the closed unit. Wren rushes out into the rain where three security surrounds her, holding electrical batons. Wren looked at them before taking a deep breath as one ran at her.
The ground under her feet shook as she forcefully kicked him back. The other two ran at her and she grabbed both their arms before elbowing one in the face making him fall to the ground.
She wrapped the other guards arm over her shoulder before easily flipping him over her shoulder. She quickly ran down the stairs towards the gate but stopped when someone walks up the steps toward her. She looked at them with wide eyes as she slowly stepped back. "Sorry, Wren. But your treatment's not done. Not yet." Allison said before the three guards pressed their taser batons to her back making her cry out in pain as she fell to the ground.
One of the guards grabbed her arm and pulled her up slightly as she looked up at Allison. "Please, I need to tell them! They're going to die. My friends. They're all going to die..."
π
Lydia, Stiles, Scott, Kira, Malia and Liam all stood around the table that was covered in pictures and blueprints of Eichen House. Scott turns to Liam and nods slightly making Liam set down a book that said "EICHEN SECURITY LOG" on the cover. Stiles follows up by holding up the stolen key card from earlier and laying it down as well.
Scott smiles at the members of his pack before getting a determined look in his eyes, "Now we get Wren."
