Chapter Six

"Wren!" Stiles said as he ran over to Wren who just walked through the school doors.
"Do you mind giving Scott the silent treatment with me?" He asked, putting his arm around her shoulder and making her walk forward, while she looks at him confused, "Why?"

"Because he let my dad get his by a car last night after the parent teacher conferences." Stiles said making her eyes widen, "Is your dad okay?" She asked and he nodded. "He's fine, soft tissue damage but that's besides the point. Scott still let it happen." He said and she nodded slowly.

"So bow not only do you want to give Scott the silent treatment, you want me to as well?" She asked and Stiles nodded, "Yep." He said and she sighed softly. "Why do I always get roped into your guys things?" She said and Stiles raised his eyebrows, "You say that like you dont willingly come along." He said and she pursed her lips.

"Damn it..."

"Wren! Perfect." Scott said anxiously as he saw Wren walking to class and he gently grabbed her shoulders, pushing her along with him. "Derek told me to stay away from Allison. And to stay away from Allison, I have to stay away from Lydia. And to stay away from Lydia, I have to stay away from Jackson, all to stay away from Allison, because they're friends with her." He explained in a rush making her nod slowly.

"But Allison is my friend, Jackson is kinda my friend and Lydia is my sister and Stiles told me not to talk to you." She said and he sighed and nodded. "That's why I need your help because you're the only person who could get Stiles to talk to me." He said making her look at him.

"Why?" She asked and his eyes widen slightly, "Uh... Because you scare us sometimes." He said making her furrow her brows. "I'm smaller than the both of you and you're a Werewolf." She said and he nodded, "Yes, and the last time we called you short you hit us with our own lacrosse sticks." He said and she nodded slightly.

"Ohhh, yeah... I did do that."

They walked into class and Stiles looked up and saw Scott and instantly looked away making Scott sighed. Scott went to sit behind Stiles while Wren went to sit next to him. "You still not talking to me?" Scott asked and Stiles just ignored him, "Can you at least tell me if your Dad is okay? It was just a bruise, right? Soft tissue damage?" Still nothing.

"You know I feel really bad about it?" Scott asked and Stiles still didn't say anything, "Okay, what if I told you that I'm trying to figure this out? And that I went to Derek for help." Scott said.

Wren watched in amusement as Stiles looked like he was mentally fighting himself before finally turning to Scott.
"If I was talking to you, I'd tell you that you're an idiot for trusting Derek. But obviously I'm not talking to you." Stiles said then turned back around in his seat while Wren chuckled.

Wren turned to Scott and started counting down with her fingers and mouthing along. As soon as she hit one Stiles turned back around, "What did he say?" Stiles asked making Scott smile.

"The what of who?" Lydia asked as Allison talked about a book she was reading, "The Beast of Gรฉvaudan." Allison said and Wren glanced up slightly alarmed. "Listen. A quadruped wolf-like monster, prowling the Auvergne and south Dordogne areas of France during the year 1764 to 1767. La Bรชte killed over a hundred people, becoming so infamous that the King Louis XXV sent one of his best hunters to try and kill it."

"Boring."

"Even the Church eventually declared the monster a messenger of Satan."

"Still boring."

"Cryptozoologists believe it may have been a subspecies of hoofed predator, possibly a mesonychid."

"Slipping-into-a-coma bored."

"While others believe it was a powerful sorcerer who could shapeshift into a man-eating monster." Allison continued to read, ignoring all of Lydia's comments. "What does any of this have anything to do with your family?" Wren asked and Allison nodded, "This. It is believe that La Bรชte was finally trapped and killed by a renowned hunter who claimed his wife and four children were the first to fall prey to the creature." His name was Argent." Allison said

"Your ancestors killed a big wolf. So what?" Lydia asked, clearly unimpressed. "Not just a big wolf. Look at this picture. What's it look like to you?" Allison asked flips the page in the book, turning it to reveal a drawing to Lydia and Wren.

The Beast stands enshrouded in mist, a powerful monster peering out of the darkness with red eyes and sharp claws. Bodies of women and children lie at its feet, looks of pure terror frozen onto their dead faces. Lydia stares at the macabre drawing and Wren just glanced back at Allison slightly worried at the fact she was learning about it.

Wren glanced over at her sister to see her staring at the picture as if she was hypnotize by it. "Lydia?" The girl blinks and then looks up at Allison with her usual expression of disdain. "It looks. Like a big. Wolf. See you in History!" She gets up, leaving Allison and Wren to watch her walk off.

"Is she okay?" Allison asked looking back at Wren, "Yeah, I think she still might be a bit shaken up from the other night." Wren said and Allison nodded. "What does it look like to you?" Allison asked and Wren looked back at the paper and sighed. She was about to say something but all of the sudden Stiles ran over and grabbed her bag. "Sorry, gotta steal her." He said before grabbing her arm and pulling her out of her seat and out the cafeteria.

"Where are we going?" Wren asked as they walked down the hallway, "We're getting a few things to help teach Scott." Stiles said and lead her to Coach's office making her raise her eyebrow at him. "What would we need in the coaches office that can help teach Scott control?" She asked and Stiles started digging around.

"This!" He said holding up a heart monitor then looked around again before grabbing Coach's phone off the desk making her raise her eyebrows. "You're gonna steal Coach's phone?" She asked and he pursed his lips, "I'm borrowing it." He said and she raised her eyebrows. "Borrowing without asking is stealing. You should know this, your dad is the Sheriff." She said as they walked out.

"Coach won't mind." He said and she chuckled, "I'm pretty sure he would, especially since it's you. He doesn't like you. He likes you more than Harris does but still not a fan." She said and he stopped to think for a moment then nodded. "Yeah, you're probably right."

Stiles, Scott and Wren walk out to the field with the boy's lacrosse equipment. At the benches, Stiles pulls out a black strap with a digital display at its center. "Put this on." He said handing to Scott who took it and looked at Stiles weird,  "Isn't that one of the heart rate monitors for the track team?" He asked and Stiles nodded. "Yeah, I borrowed it." He said making Wren raise her eyebrows, "Stole it." She said pointly.

"Temporarily misappropriated." Stiles said defensively, "Coach uses it to monitor his heart rate with his phone while he jogs, and you're gonna wear it for the rest of the day." He said the held up Coach's phone. "Isn't that Coach's phone?" Scott asked and Stiles nodded, "That... I stole." He said making Wren chuckle and shake her head slightly. "Why?" Scott asked.

"All right, well, your heart rate goes up when you go wolf, right? When you're playing lacrosse, when you're with Allison, whenever you get angry... Maybe learning to control it is tied to learning to control your heart rate." Stiles explains and Scott started to grow a small smile.

"Like the Incredible Hulk?" Scott asked and Stiles shrugged slightly, "Kind of like the Incredible Hulk." He said making Scott smirk slightly. "I'm the Incredible Hulk." Scott said and Stiles rolled his eyes, "Shut up and put the strap on." Stiles said and Wren chuckled. "That's what she said." Wren said, smiling when both of them gave her a look.

A few minutes later Scott stands with his hands behind his back as Stiles duct tapes his wrists together. "This is not exactly how I planned to spend my free period." Scott said and Stiles moved to stand next to Wren a little ways away from Scott. Stiles picks up a lacrosse stick and glances down at his phone to look at the heart monitor, "Ready?"

"No."

"Remember. Don't get angry." Stiles drops a handful of lacrosse balls at his feet and picks up his lacrosse stick. "I'm starting to think this is a really bad-" Scott started to say but then a lacrosse ball soars right into Scott's leg making Wren cringe, "Ow."

With a slight smile, Stiles picks up another ball and tosses it. This one nails Scott in the shoulder. "Okay, that kind of hurt." Scott grunted, "Quiet. You should be thinking about your heart rate. About staying calm." Stiles says and holds up his phone to show Scott's rising heart rate.

"Okay, stay calm. Staying calm.
Staying totally calm-" Scott mumbles to himself then lacrosse ball whacks him in the knee making him groan, "Son of a bitch." Scott said and Stiles laughed. "I think aim is improving!" Stiles said as he twirls the lacrosse stick in his hands, "I wonder why." Scott said making Wren chuckle. "Don't get angry." Wren said and Scott shook his head slightly, "I'm not getting mad." He said.

Another ball flies, whacking Scott right in the stomach. He gasps for breath, doubling over. Then another shot nails him in the thigh. "All right, hold on. Just stop." Scott says but the next ball hits him right in the neck making Scott stumble before he fell to his knees.

Stiles moves to pick up another ball with the lacrosse stick, but he pauses at the sound of gravelly rumbling coming towards him. A growl then a beeping sound catches his and Wren's attention. Stiles looks down at the heart rate to see the numbers climbing at an alarming speed.

"Scott?" They look up from his phone to see Scott kneeling on the grass. Both of his hands digging into the dirt, strands of torn duct tape around his wrists. He ripped the duct tape apart as Wren and Stiles looked at the heart monitor. After a couple minutes, Stiles and Wren ran over to Scott who looks up, sweat dripping down his forehead. "You started to change?" Wren asked and Scott nodded, "From anger. But it was more than that. The angrier I got, the
stronger I felt."

"Then it is anger. Which means Derek's right?" Stiles asked and Scott sighed softly, "I can't be around Allison." He said. "Why? Just because she makes you happy?" Stiles asked and Scott shook his head, "Because she makes me weak." He said making Wren roll her eyes.

"Now that some bullshit."

A pile of books drops down on the teacher's desk as students hurry in for the start of class. Coach Finstock glares up at them, "Let's go! Sit, sit, sit, sit. We got a lot to cover today. Let's go! Quicker!" He said as Scott, Stiles walked into the class. They take their seats as the classroom fills up and Scott looks up to see Wren and Allison walk in making Scott look at Stiles wide eyed, "Stiles, take the seat behind me."

Stiles move to take the seat but is to late as Allison sets her stuff down on it making Stiles back away and sit down in the seat he was originally in. Wren chuckled quietly, shaking her head as she takes the seat behind Stiles. "I haven't seen you all day." Allison whispered making Scott slightly turn his head towards her, "Uh, yeah, I've been, uh, super busy." Scott said nervously. "When are you gonna get your phone fixed? I feel like I'm totally disconnected from you."

"I changed lab partners, by the way." Allison said making Wren whip her head to look at her with a deeply offended look. "Oh, to who?" Scott asked making Allison chuckle, "To you, dummy!" She said. "Me? I mean, are you sure?" Scott asked suprised, "Yeah! This way, I have an excuse to bring you home and study. You don't mind, do you?" Allison asked and Scott shook his head. "I just- I don't want to bring your grade down." He said and Allison was about to say something but Wren spoke up, "I mind!" Wren said making Allison look over at her like she had just been caught.

"I was your lab partner." Wren said and Allison smiled at her sheepishly, "Well now you can be Stiles's partner." Allison said making Wren look at Stiles. "Yeah, Harris is gonna kill us." Wren said and Stiles chuckled and nodded.

"Let's settle down! Let's start with a quick summary of last night's reading." Coach said and a few hands went up,
"Greenberg, put your hand down. Everyone knows you did the reading. How about  uh... McCall?" He said making Scott look up at him alarmed. "What?" Scott asked, "The reading." Coach said and Scott raised his eyebrows. "Last night's reading?" He asked making Wren pinch the bridge of her nose, "No, the reading of the Gettysburg Address." Coach said and Scott furrowed his brows.

"What?"

"That was sarcasm, McCall. Familiar
with the concept?" Coach asked and Scott nodded, "Very." He said glancing back at Stiles, who smiles proudly making Wren laugh. "You do the reading or not?" Coach asked and Scott slightly shook his head, "I think I forgot."

"Okay, then. Nice work. Because it's
not like you're averaging a D in this class. You do know I can't keep you on the team with a D, McCall?" He waits patiently for Scott to respond while some people laughed. Stiles tapped Wren's arm making her look at him and he nodded to the phone under his desk that shows Scott's heart rate rising steadily.

"How about you summarize the previous night's reading? No? How about the night before? How about you summarize anything you've ever read? In your entire life." Flustered, Scott blinks up at him while Stiles and Wren watched the heart rate monitor on his phone continue to rise.

"No? A blog? How about, uh, how about, uh... the back of a cereal box? No? How about the adults-only warning from your favorite website you visit every night? Anything?Thank you, McCall. Thank you. Thank you, McCall! Thank you for extinguishing any last flicker of hope I have for your generation. You just blew it for everybody. Thanks. Next practice, you can start with suicide runs. Unless that's too much reading."

Stiles and Wren watch with dismay at the heart rate monitor. Until the numbers start dropping. Strangely fast. They glances over to see Allison had reached under Scott's desk to intertwine her fingers in his. They sit there linked while Scott's heartbeat falls to perfect calm making Stiles and Wren glance at each other in realization.

"It's her." Stiles said as they walked out of class, "What do you mean?" Scott asked. "It's Allison. Remember what you told me about the night of the full moon? You were thinking about her. About protecting her." Stiles said and Scott nodded, "Okay."

"So remember the first lacrosse game? You said you could hear her voice out on the field." Wren asked and Scott nodded, "Yeah. I did." He said. "That's what brought you back so you could score. And then in the locker room, you didn't kill her. At least not like you were trying to kill me. She brings you back." Stiles said and Scott furrowed his brows and shook his head, "But it's not always true. Because literally every time I'm kissing her or touching her-"

"That's not the same. When you're doing that you're just another hormonal teenager distanced look on Scott's face, "See, you're thinking about sex right now. Aren't you?" He asked. Gazing off with a slight smile at his lips, Scott snaps back to attention when Wren smacked the back of his head. "Stop being a pervert." She said, "Sorry..." He mumbled, running the back of his head.

"That's fine. Look, back in the classroom, when she was holding your hand, that was different, okay? I don't think she makes you weak- I-I think she actually gives you control. She's kind of like an anchor." Stiles explained and Scott nodded. "You mean, because I love her?" He asked and Stiles nodded, "Exactly." He said.

Just then Scott realized what he said making his eyes widen, "Did I just say that?" He asked, completely shocked st himself. "Yes, you just said that." Wren said,
"I love her." Scott said and Stiles nodded

"That's great. Moving on-"

"No, I do. I really do. I think I'm totally in love with her." Scott said and Stiles sighed impatiently making Wren chuckle, "And that's wonderful, even thought it is extremely fast... But before you go off and write a sonnet can we figure this out? Because you obviously can't be around her all the time." She said and Scott nodded, looking more determined. "Okay, what do I do?"

Stiles stops, an idea coming to mind making Wren sigh, "I know that look. I don't like that look." She said and Stiles rolled his eyes. "You're getting an idea, aren't you?" Scott asked and Stiles nodded his head, "Yeah."

"Could this idea get me in trouble?" Scott asked and Stiles shrugged, "Maybe." He said. "Is this idea going to cause me physical pain?" Scott said and Stiles nodded, "Definitely."

Scott and Wren followed Stiles around the school to the edge of the parking lot where several large dumpsters sit concealing a few seniors. They hang out there laughing and talking while smoking. "You stand here." Stiles said pulling Wren over behind the truck then went back to Scott. "Over here." He said, moving Scott over a couple feet, "What are we doing?" Scott asked.

"You'll see. Stand right here. Do you have your keys?" Stiles asked and Scott nodded and pulled them out. "Hold them up. Like this. Now, whatever happens I want you to think about Allison. Find her voice like you did at the game? Got it?" Stiles said and Scott nodded, "Good. Keep holding the keys."

Stiles walks over to the Senior's truck and takes out his own car keys. Then in a quick few seconds, Stiles drags his key across the side of the Senior's truck, digging a hideous scratch into the paint. Wren's eyes widened as her jaw fell, watching in shock as Stiles moved to stand next to her, looking at Scott.

"Hey, hey, hey, dude! What do you think you're doing to that truck, bro?" Stiles yelled making the Seniors turn around to see Scott holding his car keys up. "What the hell?!?"

Scott steps back as Stiles gives him a devilish smile. The Seniors are on him in a nanosecond making Scott put up his arms trying to protect himself. But they literally start beating the ever-loving crap out of him. Stiles eyes his phone to note the rising heart rate while Scott crumbles to the pavement under the merciless pummeling.

"You are enjoying this to much." Wren said and Stiles laughed, "I know right?" He said looking over at her with a smile making her chuckle and shake her head. "Stop! Stop right now! What do you idiots think you're doing?" Mr. Harris says as he breaks up the fight. Scott lies on the ground, blood dripping from his nose. He slowly turns to Stiles who holds his phone up, the screen showing a steady and normal heartbeat.

It worked.
