Season 3: Chapter 1 - Suzie, Do You Copy?
Mike, Will, Lucas and Max quickly walked through the busy mall before walking into an ice cream parlor called Scoops Ahoy. They walked up to the front desk where two girls were working, before Mike started ringing the bell. "Hey dingus, your children are here." The girl, with a name tag that read "Robin", said.
A second later Steve slid over the window to the back room before giving the group an annoyed look. "Again, seriously?" Steve asked and Mike just raised his eyebrows slightly before ringing the bell again.
After leading the four into the back hallways that connect most of the stores and the movie theater, Steve walked back out to help serve ice cream. But a few minutes later, all the power throughout the Starcourt Mall suddenly shut down, making everyone glance around.
"That's weird." Steve said before walking over to the light switch and flicking it up and down a few times, looking over at his coworkers. "I shouldn't have to be the one to tell you this, since it is common sense, but that isn't gonna work." The girl, who's name tag read "Jeanette", said and Steve raised his eyebrows.
"Oh really?" He asked before rapidly flicking the light switch, making Jeanette roll her eyes as she and Robin glanced at each other. He continued to flick the light switch until all the lights suddenly came on and he gave Robin and Jeanette a look. "Let there be light." He said before going back to serve ice cream while the girls just gave him a sarcastic look.
π
"Alrighty, one scoop of chocolate. That's a buck-twenty-five." Steve said as he handed a girl an ice cream cone, "Anything else? Ooh, Purdue. Fancy." Steve said, looking at the girl's shirt as she handed him some money and the girl smiled.
"Yeah, I'm excited." The girl said and Steve nodded, "Yeah, I know, I considered it, Purdue, but then I was like, you know what? I really think I need some real-life experience, you know, before I hit college, see what it feels like." Steve said, making the girl glance at her friend, who was watching in amusement
"Kinda like, uh, I don't know, see what it's like to earn a working-man's wage, you know? Uh... Oh, I'm sorry. I think that's, like, really important." Steve said as the cash register beeped and the girl nodded, "Yeah, totally." She said. "Yeah anyway, this was, like, so fun. We should kind of like, you know, I don't know, maybe hang out this weekend or- Oh, sorry about that." He said as he handed the girl her change, some of the change falling onto the ground.
"Uh... I don't know. Maybe next weekend or-" Steve suggested and the girl chuckled slightly, "Yeah, I'm busy." She said. "Oh, that's cool, I'm- I'm working here next weekend, so... the following weekend's better for me." He said and the girl shook her head slightly, "No, I'm sorry, I can't. Okay, thanks." She said before she and her friend started to walk away.
"I... This is... my first day here." Steve said awkwardly as the two girls walked away while laughing. "And another one bites the dust." Someone said, making Steve turn around to find Jeanette and Robin standing in the back room, holding a white board. One half of the board said "You Rule" with zero tally marks, and the other half said "You Suck" with five tally marks.
"You are oh-for-six, Popeye." Robin said as Jeanette drew a sixth tally mark under "you suck" and Steve nodded slightly. "Yeah, yeah, I can count." Steve said and Robin raised her eyebrows, "You know that means you suck." She said. "Yep, I can read too." Steve said, making Jeanette raise her eyebrows, "Really? Since when?" She asked, making Robin chuckle as she put the board away.
"It's this stupid hat. I'm telling you it is totally blowing my best feature." Steve said as he leaned against the counter across from them, "Yeah, company policy is a real drag." Robin said and Jeanette raised her eyebrows.
"You know, it's a crazy idea, but have you ever considered, I don't know... telling the truth?" Jeanette asked and Steve raised his eyebrows, "Oh, you mean, that I couldn't even get into Tech and my douchebag dad's trying to teach me a lesson, I make three bucks an hour, and I have no future? That truth?" He asked and Jeanette shrugged slightly.
"At least you'd be honest." She said and Robin glanced at something behind Steve, "Hey, twelve o'clock." Robin said, making Steve glance back to see a group of girls walk in. "Oh, shit. Oh shit. Okay... Uh- I'm going in. Okay. And you know what? Screw company policy." Steve said as he threw his hat into the back room, making Robin and Jeanette raise their eyebrows.
"Oh, my God, you're a whole new man." Robin said, "Right?" Steve said as he did a little dance with his shoulders while Jeanette laughed before he turned to the group of girls. "Ahoy, ladies!" Steve yelled, making the girls jump, "Didn't see you there. Would you guys like to set sail on this ocean of flavor for me? I'll be your captain. I'm Steve Harrington." He said and a couple of the girls laughed at him while others looked at him weird.
"Can I get you guys a little taste of the Cherries Jubilee? No? Anybody? Banana Boat? Four people, four spoons? Share it in the booth? Anybody? It's hot out there." Steve said while Robin and Jeanette looked at him weird before Jeanette put another tally on the board.

Season 3: Chapter Two - The Mall Rats
"Have a nice day." Jeanette said as she handed a couple people some ice cream cones, "Thank you!" The girl said and Jeanette smiled at them before they walked away. "You are way too enthusiastic while working." Robin said, making Jeanette give her a look, "Kindness gets tips." She said, waving around a dollar bill before putting it in the tip jar.
Dustin walked up to the cash register, making Jeanette and Robin look at him. "Hi!" He said, a big smile on his face, "Hi." Jeanette and Robin both said. "I'm Dustin." Dustin said, slightly pointing at himself, "I'm Robin." Robin said and Jeanette smiled. "And I'm Jeanette." She said, "Please to meet you. Uh, is- is he here?" Dustin asked, making the two girls raise their eyebrows.
"Is who here?" Robin asked before the door to the backroom suddenly opened, making them look over to see Steve with wide eyes. "Henderson!" Steve said, making Dustin laugh and point at him, "Henderson! He's back!" Steve said as he moved around the front counter. Jeanette and Robin slowly looked at each other with raised eyebrows.
"I'm back! You got the job!" Dustin said and Steve nodded, "I got the job!" He said before bringing his hands up to imitate playing a trumpet. He walked up to Fustin before they both did a handshake which turned into dueling with pretend lightsabers and ending with Steve "dying" while his guts spilled out.
They both laugh while Robin and Jeanette lean against the counter slightly. "How many children are you friends with?" They both asked, making Steve look at them for a moment before sighing and gesturing to them as he looked back at Dustin.
π
Robin scooped out some ice cream on a taste tester spoon before handing it to Jeanette, who then handed it to Erica. The young girl tried it before humming slightly and putting the spoon in a trash cup, then looking up at Jeanette.
"Can I try the peppermint stick?" Erica asked, making Jeanette raise her eyebrows, "Haven't you already tried the peppermint stick?" She asked. "Yes, and I'd like to try it again." Erica said in a slightly annoyed tone, making Jeanette suck in a deep breath before smiling and looking at Robin.
"I regret letting you talk me into getting this job." Jeanette said and Robin gave her a sarcastic smile before turning towards the back room, "Steve!" She called out.
In the back room, Dustin sat at the table while Steve walked around, eating a banana while they listened to the Russian recording that Dustin intercepted the other night. "So, what do you think?" Dustin asked as he stopped the recording, "It sounded familiar." Steve said, making Dustin look at him crazy, "What?" He asked.
"The music. The music right there at the end." Steve said and Dustin gave him a look, "Why are you listening to the music, Steve? Listen to the Russian! We're translating Russian!" Dustin said. "I'm trying to listen to the Russian, but there's music playing-" Steve said before getting cut off by Jeanette and Robin barging into the back room.
"All right, babysitting time is over. You need to get in there." Robin said, making Steve step over to Dustin while Jeanette gasped slightly when she saw they had erased the white board and put Russian and American letters on it. "Hey, our board! That was important data!" She said, turning to the guys, "I guarantee you, what we're doing is way more important than your data." Dustin said and Jeanette raised her eyebrows.
"Yeah? And how do you know these Russians are up to no good, anyways?" She asked, making Dustin's eyes widen, "How does she know about the Russians?" He asked, turning to Steve, who still had his mouth full of banana. "I don't know." He said while shrugging, "You told her about the Russians." Dustin said and Steve shook his head.
"It wasn't me." He said while the girls gave them an annoyed look, "Hello, we can hear you." Robin said, making them look at her. "Actually, we can hear everything. You are both extremely loud." Robin said and Jeanette nodded, "You think you have evil Russians plotting against our country, on tape, and you're trying to translate, but haven't figured out a word because you didn't realize Russians use an entirely different alphabet than we do. Sound about right?" Jeanette asked.
Robin went to grab the recorder, making Steve quickly grab it and pull it away. "Whoa, whoa, what do you think you're doing?" He asked, "We wanna hear it." Robin said with a slight shrug. "Why?" They both asked, "Cause maybe I can help. I'm fluent in four languages, you know." Robin said and Jeanette nodded.
"And I know several. Including Elven, which is technically made up but I'll still count it." Jeanette said and Dustin raised his eyebrows, "Russian?" He asked. "Ou-yay are-yay umb-day." Robin said, making Dustin and Steve's eyes widen as they looked at her impressed, "Holy shit!" Dustin said and Jeanette chuckled.
"Yeah, she just called you dumb in Pig Latin." Jeanette said, making Steve hit Dustin with his banana peel, "Idiot." He said as the girls sat down. "But I can speak Spanish and French and Italian, and I've been in band for twelve years." Robin said and Jeanette nodded in agreement, "As have I. I also know a little Ukrainian which is similar to Russian and I'm level sixteen in Dungeons and Dragons." Jeanette said.
"Our ears are little geniuses, trust me." Robin said and Steve was a little skeptical, "Come on, it's your turn to sling ice cream, our turn to translate." Jeanette said and Robin nodded. "We don't even want credit, we're just bored." Jeanette said as Robin held out her ice cream scoop, making Steve and Dustin glance at each other before Steve traded the recorder for the ice cream scoop.
π
Robin walked back and forth while Jeanette and Dustin sat at the table, still listening to the recording. "Wait, that last part, just one more time." Jeanette said, making Dustin rewind the recording and Jeanette listened closely. "Okay, that word." Jeanette said, making Dustin pause it, "It's pronounced dly-nna-ya." She said and Dustin nodded.
"Dly-nna-ya." He repeated, "Which is spelled- D. D." Robin said and Dustin nodded as he got up to run over to the white board. "D ... D ... The- the chair! The chair-looking thingy!" Dustin said and Jeanette quickly wrote it down.
A moment later Robin slid over the window, making Steve look back as she and Jeanette leaned against the counter. "We've got our first sentence." Robin said, making Steve completely stop serving ice cream as he walked over to them, two ice cream cones in his hands, "Oh, seriously?" He asked.
"The week is long." Jeanette said, imitating a Russian accent, "Well that's thrilling." Steve said sarcastically with a disappointed look on his face. "I know. But, progress." Robin said before closing the window.
π
"The week is long. The silver cat feeds. When blue meets yellow in the west." Jeanette, Steve, Robin, and Dustin all read what they've written on the white board. The mall was closed but the four of them were still there, still working on the translation.
"I mean, it just, it just can't be right." Steve said as he pulled down the metal gate to the shop before locking it. "It's right." Robin said and Jeanette shrugged slightly, "Honestly, I think it's great news." She said, making Steve look at her crazy.
"How is this great news? I mean, so much for being American heroes. It's total nonsense." Steve said and Dustin shook his head, "It's not nonsense. It's too specific. It's obviously a code." He said and Steve furrowed his brows. "What do you mean, a code?" He asked and Jeanette glanced back at him, "Like a super secret spy code." She said.
"That's a total stretch." He said and Robin looked at him, "I don't know, is it?" She asked. "You're buying into this?" Steve asked and Robin shrugged slightly, "Listen, just for kicks, let's entertain the possibility that it is a secret Russian transmission. What'd you think they were gonna say, fire the warhead at noon?" She asked and Dustin nodded.
"Exactly." He said and Jeanette made a slight dramatic gesture, "And my translation is correct. I know that for sure, so, the silver cat feeds. Why would anyone talk like that unless they were trying to mask the meaning of their message?" She asked and Dustin nodded.
"Exactly." He said and Robin looked at him and Jeanette, "And why would anyone mask the true meaning of their message unless the message was somehow sensitive?" She said and this time both Dustin and Jeanette nodded. "Exactly!" They both said and Robin raised her eyebrows, "So I guess that confirms your suspicion." She said, looking at Dustin.
"Evil Russians." He said and Jeanette laughed softly, "I can't believe I'm about to agree with this awesomely strange child, but, yeah, totally evil Russians." She said. "So how do we crack it?" Dustin asked and Robin shrugged slightly, "Well, I guess we translate the rest and hopefully a pattern emerges." She said.
"A pattern. Right, like maybe silver cat is a meeting place?" Dustin asked and Jeanette pointed at him, "Or a person." She said and Dustin pointed back at her. "Or a weapon." He said, "It's probably gonna take a super genius to crack it, but..." Robin said before glancing back to see Steve not behind them anymore.
"Where's Steve?" She asked and they all stopped and turned around to see Steve staring at a rocking pony machine before he quickly started shuffling through the change in his pocket. "Hey, Steve! What are you doing?" Jeanette asked, "Uh, it's a quarter. I need- do you have a quarter?" He asked and Robin chuckled as they walked over to him.
"Are you sure you're tall enough for that ride?" Robin asked, "Quarter!" He yelled slightly before Jeanette tossed him a quarter. He crouched down next to the machine, putting the quarter in and letting it start up, music playing as the horse rocked back and forth.
"You need help getting up, little Stevie?" Robin asked, making both Jeanette and Dustin laugh while Steve shushed her. "Would you just shut up and listen?" He asked and they listened to the music before Dustin's eyes widened in realization.
"Holly shit. The music. The music!" He said as he took off his backpack, pulling the recorder out to hear the same man speaking in Russian while music played in the background. "I don't understand." Robin said while Jeanette's eyes widened, "It's the exact same song on the recording." She said.
"Maybe they have horses like this in Russia." Robin suggested and Steve looked at the label, "Indiana Flyer? I don't think so. This code, it- didn't come from Russia... It came from here."

Season 3: Chapter Three - The Case Of The Missing Lifeguard
Jeanette and Robin sat on the counter in front of each other as Jeanette read a book about the Russian language and Robin read their notepad. "The week is long. The silver cat feeds when blue meets yellow in the west. A trip to China sounds nice if you tread lightly." Robin said and Jeanette furrowed her brows slightly.
"Tread lightly?" She mumbled while flipping through the book before there was a knock on the door in the back room. The girls looked at each other before they suddenly started doing rock-paper-scissors. Jeanette held her hand flat out in front of her while Robin held out two fingers.
Jeanette groaned while Robin smirked and pretended to cut her fingers, "Scissors beats paper." Robin said and Jeanette rolled her eyes as she opened the window to the back room. "You always pick scissors." Jeanette mumbled and Robin looked at her in amusement, "And yet you rarely pick rock." She said as Jeanette climbed through the window.
"I'd make a joke about why you always pick scissors but wouldn't want to risk others hearing." Jeanette said and Robin chuckled, "How thoughtful of you." She said and Jeanette smiled at her before walking over to the back door. She opened the door to find a delivery man standing there.
"Delivery for you." He said and she smiled at him, "Thank you." She said, taking the package. Robin walked over as Jeanette turned around and she took the box from her before Jeanette turned back to sign a paper. The girls both looked at the man before noticing his shirt and hat said "LYNX Transportation" on them.
"Have a nice day." He said and Jeanette smiled slightly, "Yeah, you too." She said. Jeanette and Robin looked at each other for a moment as the man walked away before they quickly walked out onto the hall. On the back of the
