Minji sat on the bus, nestled beside her boyfriend, Kyung-junβthe school's infamous bully. But only she knew the side of him that no one else sawβthe one who could be a surprisingly clingy boyfriend when it came to her.
"I'm so excited for this trip! We're going to have so much fun!" Minji giggled, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Kyung-jun glanced at her, letting out a small chuckle as he removed his ever-present headphonesβsomething he only did when Minji spoke. "Damn... you're too bright for me."
She covered her mouth as she laughed, nudging him playfully. "And you're too grumpy for me. Yet, here we are, happily together."
As the bus rumbled down the road, Minji's energy slowly faded, and she soon drifted off to sleep against Kyung-jun's shoulder. He sighed but made no move to push her away, instead adjusting slightly so she could rest more comfortably.
In the background, Heo Yul's voice rang through the bus as he dramatically protested while playing Mafia with their classmates. "I wasn't even the Mafia! Why did you eliminate me?!"
From a few seats ahead, Seungbin turned around to glare at them. "Yah! Stop making so much noiseβKyung-jun is trying to sleep!"
Finally, the bus pulled up in front of the youth center where they would be staying. Kyung-jun glanced down at Minji, reluctant to wake her up, but after a moment, he gently tapped her shoulder.
"Hey... wake up, Sunshine. We're here."
Minji blinked sleepily, rubbing her eyes before yawning and stretching her arms. Still half-dazed, she slowly got off the bus, her body feeling heavy from the nap.
Kyung-jun followed right behind her, effortlessly picking up both of their luggage. "Let's go," he muttered.
Before she could respond, their teacher sighed in frustration, shaking his phone. "Wait, what? I can't hear anythingβthere's no signal here," he mumbled to his interlocutor before walking away.
Minji turned toward one of the building's windows, and for a fleeting second, her breath hitched. She could've sworn she saw a dark shadow move past the glass.
Shaking off the uneasy feeling, she followed Kyung-jun as they made their way to the gymnasium. Inside, their classmates were already dancing, their movements energetic and carefree.
Off to the side, Park Woo-ram stood with his camera in hand, smirking as he zoomed in on his crush, Joo-young, capturing her every move with embarrassing dedication.
Minji laughed softly. This trip was already shaping up to be interesting.
Kyung-jun and Minji walked into the gymnasium, the air buzzing with laughter and music as their classmates danced around without a care. Woo-ram was still glued to his camera, grinning as he zoomed in on Joo-young, who, despite pretending not to notice, was clearly frustrated
Meanwhile, Minji tugged at Kyung-jun's sleeve, pulling him toward the quieter corner of the gymnasium. "Let's sit for a bit! You don't like loud places anyway," she chirped, flashing him a bright smile.
Kyung-jun exhaled through his nose but let himself be dragged along, his free hand stuffed in his pocket. "You just want an excuse to cuddle, don't you?" he muttered.
Minji plopped down onto the gym floor and patted the space next to her. "Obviously."
He gave her a side glance but still sat beside her, stretching his long legs in front of him. Without hesitation, Minji rested her head against his shoulder, sighing contently. "You're comfy."
Kyung-jun scoffed, rolling his eyes. "Tch. You use me as a pillow too much."
"You're just so warm," Minji mumbled, snuggling closer. "And, I know you like it."
His face twitched, but he didn't push her away. Instead, he reached up and flicked her forehead lightly. "You're lucky I do."
Across the gym, a group of students started whispering amongst themselves.
"Aww, look at them! I swear, I never thought Kyung-jun could be soft for anyone, but Minji's really got him wrapped around her finger," Na-yeon whispered, a dreamy smile on her face.
Mina, who had been eyeing them for a while, crossed her arms and huffed. "Ugh, I don't get it. What does she even see in him? He's literally grumpy all the time!"
Joo-young chuckled, nudging Mina. "Yeah, but look at how he lets her do whatever she wants. If anyone else tried to cuddle him like that, they'd probably get shoved across the room."
Mina clicked her tongue, unable to deny it. "Still... it's kind of unfair. She gets to see a side of him that no one else does."
Meanwhile, Minji hummed softly, oblivious to the whispers. She lifted her head slightly, staring at Kyung-jun with a playful glint in her eyes. "You know... for someone who always complains, you never actually stop me from clinging to you."
Kyung-jun narrowed his eyes. "Tch. Shut up."
She giggled. "See? You can't even deny it."
Before he could retort, Minji reached up and lightly booped his nose, her laughter bubbling over. Kyung-jun stiffened at the unexpected touch, his ears turning a little pink.
"Sunshine, you have a death wish," he warned, glaring at her.
Minji grinned mischievously. "But I'm your sunshine."
A deep sigh left Kyung-jun's lips, and he pinched the bridge of his nose. "...Yeah, yeah. You are."
From the sidelines, the whispers continued.
"Did he just let her boop his nose?!"
"That's it. I'm jealous."
Minji giggled at Kyung-jun's flustered expression, clearly enjoying how easily she could tease him. She rested her chin on his shoulder, swaying side to side playfully. "You're blushing," she sang softly, poking at his cheek.
Kyung-jun scoffed and turned his face away, avoiding her gaze. "Tch. No, I'm not."
"You sooo are," Minji teased, leaning in closer.
Kyung-jun clicked his tongue, pretending to be annoyed, but the small twitch at the corner of his lips gave him away. "You're lucky I tolerate you."
Minji gasped dramatically. "Tolerate?! Excuse me, I am the best thing that has ever happened to you!"
Kyung-jun finally looked at her, his expression deadpan. "Says who?"
"Says me!" Minji pouted, crossing her arms. "Who else listens to your grumbling without running away? Who else hugs you when you act all tough but secretly love affection?"
Kyung-jun scoffed again. "I don'tβ"
"Who else would willingly date the school's grumpiest bully and think he's the cutest person ever?"
Kyung-jun froze for a second before his lips parted slightly in disbelief. "Did you just call me cute?"
Minji nodded proudly. "Yup! The cutest!"
He stared at her, blinking in slow disbelief, then abruptly reached forward and flicked her foreheadβjust enough to make her squeak.
"Ow!" Minji pouted, rubbing her forehead.
"You're ridiculous," he muttered, shaking his head. But there was no real bite to his words, and the way his gaze softened made it obvious he wasn't actually mad.
Their classmates, still whispering from a distance, were barely holding back their reactions.
"No way. She just called him cute to his face."
"And he didn't explode?!"
"He's literally just letting her bully him back. I'm going crazy."
Mina huffed in disbelief. "I don't get it. He ignores literally everyone else, but with her, he lets her do anything?!"
Na-yeon giggled. "It's because he's in love~"
Back in the corner of the gym, Minji suddenly stretched her arms with a small yawn before scooting even closer to Kyung-junβuntil their shoulders were pressed together.
"I'm tired," she murmured, tilting her head so it rested against his. "Let me stay like this for a bit."
Kyung-jun stiffened at first, but then, ever so subtly, he shifted so she could rest more comfortably. "...Whatever. Just don't drool on me."
Minji smiled, her eyes fluttering shut. "No promises."
Despite his usual grumbling, Kyung-jun let her stay exactly where she was, the ghost of a smile on his lips.
And in the background, their classmates continued to whisper furiously.
"This is so unfair."
"Why is this actually cute?"
"Okay, but if Kyung-jun doesn't want her, I'll take her!"
But Kyung-jun did want her. More than anything.
And everyone could see it.
The teacher finally entered the gym in a rush, his expression stern as he made his way toward Jun-hee and Minji. "Class president Minji, I have to leave to pick up the students from another class. I'm counting on you and Jun-hee to make sure everyone gets to their rooms before curfew and actually goes to bed. It's already late."
Minji let out a quiet sigh, still frustrated that she wouldn't be getting an early night's rest. "Understood, sir," she nodded, trying her best to sound responsible despite her exhaustion.
Just as the teacher left the lights suddenly went out. A few students let out startled yelps as darkness swallowed the gym.
"I heard a story..." Heo-yul's voice cut through the room dramatically. "A high school student committed suicide here... and his spirit still lingers."
Some students groaned, already knowing where this was going. Others whispered nervously.
"You should definitely not look in the mirror after midnight," he continued, his voice dropping to a whisper. "And whatever you do... don't look if you feel something grabbing your ankle while you're sleeping."
The gym fell silent.
"Because if you don't follow the rules..."
He suddenly screamed at the top of his lungs, "YOU WILL SEE A GHOST!"
Chaos erupted. Students yelped, some clinging to each other, while others scolded Heo-yul for trying to scare them. He, of course, cackled triumphantly, running around the gym like a mischievous child.
"Idiot," Kyung-jun muttered, shaking his head before standing up. He turned to Minji, reaching out a hand. "Let's go to our room."
Minji gladly took his hand, letting him pull her up. The warmth of his touch made her heart flutter for a second, but she ignored it, focusing instead on how exhausted she was.
After ensuring the rest of the class had settled into their rooms, Minji finally sat on her bed, letting out a deep breath. "Ahhh, I'm so tired," she whined, flopping back onto the mattress dramatically.
Kyung-jun smirked from where he stood near the door, arms crossed. "You were practically sleepwalking back here. If I left you behind, you probably would've passed out in the hallway."
Minji peeked at him through one eye, sticking out her tongue. "Rude! You're supposed to tell me I did a great job as class president."
He rolled his eyes but walked over to her anyway, sitting on the bed beside her. Without a word, he reached out and gently massaged her temples with his fingers, his movements slow and careful.
Minji blinked in surprise. "H-Huh? What are you doing?"
"You're complaining about being tired. You'll probably fall asleep faster if I do this." His voice was gruff, but his touch was soft.
Minji stared at him, her cheeks warming. It wasn't often that Kyung-jun openly showed affection, but when he did, it always caught her off guard.
"You're being suspiciously sweet right now," she mumbled, pouting slightly. "Are you possessed by the ghost Heo-yul was talking about?"
Kyung-jun scoffed. "Shut up and enjoy it before I change my mind."
Minji giggled but closed her eyes, leaning into his touch. "Mmm... okay, okay... but don't stop, okay?"
Kyung-jun didn't answer, but his fingers never stopped moving, gently easing away her tension. His gaze softened as he watched her relax, a small smile playing at her lips.
Suddenly, both of their phones vibrated at the same time.
"Hm? What's this?" Minji muttered, glancing at her screen.
A notification had popped up, revealing an envelope that slowly opened, displaying her assigned role. Civilian.
"Mafia game...?" she murmured, raising an eyebrow. "Some kind of online mafia game? Apparently, I'm a civilian. What about you?"
Kyung-jun hesitated for a fraction of a second before answering, "Oh... same."
She barely noticed the pause, already distracted by the flood of messages in the group chat.
"Oh, look, the others got the game too," Minji chuckled, reading Heo-yul's message aloud. "He typed, 'Baek Eun-ha is the mafia.'"
Kyung-jun glanced at her screen as she giggled. "And she replied by immediately voting him out. Pfft, this is hilarious."
"I'm voting for him too. I wanna hear him scream in frustration," she laughed, tapping the vote button.
As expected, the votes against Heo-yul came pouring in.
Minji shook her head, amused. "This guy never has any luck with this gameβnot even online."
But just as she was about to tease Heo-yul in the chat, something made Kyung-jun frown.
"Wait... how did this game even appear on our phones?" His voice was serious now, his grip tightening on the device.
Minji's laughter died down.
"...And how does it know our names?" he added, his brows furrowing.
A chill ran down her spine as she glanced at the screen again. That was strange. She didn't remember downloading anything.
"And we don't even have internet here... so how did it install itself?" she murmured, unease creeping into her voice.
Her instincts told her something was wrong. She stood up abruptly.
"I'm going to check with Jun-hee," she said, heading for the reception area.
Minji pushed open the door to the reception room, spotting Jun-hee leaning against a desk, phone in hand.
"Hey, Jun-hee. Did the teacher come back yet?" she asked.
"No," he replied, his expression as unreadable as ever. "I tried calling him, but there's no signal here."
Her stomach twisted.
Something wasn't right.
"We should all be together," she decided. "Let's gather everyone in the hall instead of staying in separate rooms."
When they stepped back into the main hall, the other students immediately swarmed them.
"Where's the teacher?"
"Why isn't the phone working?"
"What are we supposed to do?"
Their voices overlapped, panic creeping in.
Jun-hee stepped forward, keeping his usual calm demeanor. "Everyone, go back to your rooms. Hyun-oh and I will go out early tomorrow morning to get help."
The reassurance seemed to work. The students grumbled but started dispersingβuntil a voice echoed through the overhead speakers.
"Voting ends in one minute."
A soft ding followed as a timer appeared on everyone's screens.
"Whoa, this is cool," Woo-ram murmured, staring at his phone in awe.
Then, the female voice spoke again.
"The vote is over."
All eyes turned to Heo-yul, who was grinning like usual.
"Yah... you guys seriously voted for me?" he scoffed.
Baek Eun-ha smirked. "We all know you're behind this."
Then, the voice returned.
"Heo-yul is eliminated."
At first, nothing happened.
Then, Heo-yul's grin faded. He clutched his head suddenly, his body trembling. "Argh... my headβ"
Minji's amusement quickly turned to concern. "Hey... are you okay?"
Laughter rippled through the room as the students assumed it was just another one of his jokes.
But then his eyes rolled backβturning completely white.
Minji froze.
"Heo-yul?"
Before anyone could react, he started hitting his head, his movements frantic and unnatural.
"Heo-yul! What are you doing?!" Minji shouted, horror creeping into her voice.
The other students lunged to stop him, but in an instant, he shoved them all back with an inhuman strength. They were sent sprawling to the floor as Heo-yul let out a guttural screamβ
Then he bolted toward the window.
The glass shattered as he crashed through it, disappearing into the darkness outside.
Minji screamed.
She barely registered the shouts of her classmates, the sound of glass raining onto the floor, or the stunned silence that followed.
Her knees buckled. The air felt heavy, suffocating.
Thenβ
A school bell rang.
The sound reverberated through the room, sharp and disorienting.
Her vision blurred.
The last thing she heard was Kyung-jun shouting her name before everything went black.
