brandon
brandon stepped into the police station, his stomach tight with frustration. his mom was already in a mood, puffing on her cigarette before they even left the house. now, standing next to her, he felt the tension in the air. coogie had always been a good kid, but somehow, trouble seemed to find him.
"where they at?" his mom muttered under her breath, looking around the station, her cigarette long gone but the scent still lingering on her clothes.
brandon sighed, rubbing his face. "ma, just relax. we'll get him and go."
she shot him a look that said relax? "relax? boy, you outta your mind. i ain't raised y'all to be hangin' round here like some hoodlums."
they waited a few more minutes until a cop finally brought coogie out, his wrists no longer cuffed but his head hanging low. coogie looked tired, like he'd been sitting there for hours, but when he saw them, he couldn't help the small smile creeping onto his face.
"what you smilin' about?" their mom said as she stepped up, smacking him lightly on the back of the head. "you got me comin' down here for this nonsense?"
"i ain't do nothin', ma," coogie mumbled, rubbing the back of his head, trying to look innocent.
"yeah, well, you better not be back in here again, or imma do more than that," she snapped, eyes narrowing at him. but there was a hint of relief in her voice too coogie might've been in trouble, but at least he was safe.
brandon shook his head, stepping forward and putting a hand on coogie's shoulder. "come on, let's get outta here."
they started walking toward the door, brandon's mind spinning with thoughts of what coogie had been up to. "what happened, man? what you doin' at the station?"
"man, i told y'all i ain't do nothing. they thought i was involved in some mess 'cause i was near the scene," coogie said, still looking annoyed. "was just mindin' my own business."
"minding your business at a crime scene?" brandon raised an eyebrow. "boy, you gotta be smarter than that."
coogie sighed, looking down at the floor as they walked. "it wasn't like that, b. i was just ridin' through."
their mom huffed, shaking her head. "keep ridin' through places like that, and you gon' ride yourself straight into trouble. next time, we ain't comin' down here to get you."
brandon glanced at her, knowing she didn't really mean it. she loved coogie too much to ever leave him behind. but he understood her frustration. they couldn't afford for coogie to be getting into trouble none of them could.
"you good now, though?" brandon asked as they stepped outside into the fresh air.
"yeah, i'm good," coogie said, still rubbing his head where their mom had smacked him. "just wanna go home, man."
brandon nodded. "alright, let's get home then. no more funny business."
ronnie
ronnie had been hitting the streets, searching for answers about his son jason's death. everywhere he went, people either looked away or gave vague responses. he knew how things worked out hereβnobody wanted to be caught in the middle of someone else's business, especially when it came to a dead body.
it had been a few days since the shooting, and the cops weren't doing much. they never did, not when it came to his people. if i want answers, ronnie thought, i'm gonna have to get 'em myself.
he heard through the grapevine that some boys had been hanging out near where jason was killed. he didn't know their names or their faces, but word on the street was that one of them might've seen something. that's how he ended up near one of the corners, where a group of younger guys were posted up. he approached them, his steps heavy with anger and grief.
"yo," ronnie called out to the group, his voice rough but steady. the boys looked up, sizing him up like they didn't know whether to take him seriously.
"what's up, old head?" one of the boys asked, his tone almost dismissive. he couldn't have been more than twenty, but already he had the hardened look of someone who'd seen too much.
ronnie stepped closer, ignoring the tension in the air. "my son, jason. he was killed a few days ago. i'm lookin' for answers."
the group went quiet, exchanging looks. ronnie could see one of the younger ones shift uncomfortably, like he knew something but didn't want to say it. gotcha, ronnie thought.
"i ain't hear nothin'," the first boy said, taking a drag from his cigarette, trying to act like he didn't care.
ronnie wasn't buying it. "i know y'all see things out here. i ain't the police. i just wanna know who did this to my boy."
the younger one finally spoke up, his voice barely a whisper. "i saw a kid on a bike that day. he was around when your son got shot. after the shots, he was standing over the body."
ronnie's heart pounded in his chest. "who? who was it?"
the boy glanced nervously at the others before finally saying, "his name's coogie. he's always ridin' around on that bike of his. looked like he might've been tryin' to take somethin'."
ronnie's stomach dropped. coogie? he knew the name. the kid was always around the neighborhood, but he'd never thought much about him before. that kid? over my boy's body?
"you sure it was him?" ronnie asked, his voice low, filled with anger he could barely hold back.
the boy nodded. "yeah, it was him."
ronnie didn't say anything else. he just turned and walked away, his mind racing. coogie was gonna have to answer for this, one way or another. my son's gone, he thought, and i ain't lettin' nobody get away with that.
kevin
kevin, kasani, and papa were walking through the hall after lunch, making their way to the auditorium where they knew andrea would be. kevin was feeling confident, ready to finally ask her out. papa was cracking jokes as usual, but kasani was quiet, eyeing kevin with a sly grin.
as they stepped inside the auditorium, they spotted andrea talking with a couple of her friends by the stage. kevin glanced at kasani and papa, taking a deep breath. "alright, i'm about to do this."
kasani chuckled, shaking her head. "good luck with that."
kevin frowned. "what's that supposed to mean?"
kasani shrugged, a teasing smile on her face. "i'm just sayin', jake already asked her out."
kevin paused, narrowing his eyes. "nah, no way. jake wouldn'tβ"
"he did," kasani interrupted, crossing her arms. "he already made his move. you're late."
kevin glanced over at andrea, his confidence wavering a little. "nah, you lyin'. jake's not even into her like that."
kasani raised an eyebrow. "believe what you want, kev, but she's already got plans with jake."
papa snickered. "man, you better hurry up before you get curved."
kevin, still not convinced, decided to go for it anyway. he straightened up and walked over to andrea, giving her a smile. "hey, andrea, what's up? was wondering if you'd wanna hang out sometime?"
andrea looked at him for a second, then gave a small, apologetic smile. "oh, um... jake already asked me out. i didn't think you'd be interested."
kevin froze for a moment, his heart sinking. "for real?" he asked, trying to keep his cool.
"yeah," andrea nodded. "sorry, kevin."
as she turned back to her friends, kevin stood there, feeling a bit crushed. he looked back at kasani and papa, who were watching from a distance. kasani had a smug look on her face, clearly enjoying being right.
"told you," kasani mouthed, laughing as kevin walked back over, shaking his head in disbelief.
coogie
coogie hopped off his bike and knocked on emmett's door, tapping his foot impatiently as he waited. the door creaked open, and emmett stepped out, wiping his hands on his jeans like he'd just finished working on something.
"aye, what's good, coog?" emmett asked, leaning against the doorframe.
"yo, you got my bag?" coogie asked, peering past him like he was in a hurry. "i left it here the other day, man."
"oh, yeah, that." emmett turned around, disappearing inside for a second before coming back out with coogie's backpack. "why you always leavin' your stuff everywhere, man? you gotta keep track of your things."
coogie chuckled, grabbing the bag and slinging it over his shoulder. "yeah, i know, i be slippin'. too much goin' on in my head, man. what you been on though?"
emmett shrugged, stepping out onto the porch. "same ol'. workin', hustlin', tryin' to make ends meet. you know how it is out here."
coogie nodded, glancing at his bike leaned up against the railing. "yeah, it's wild out here. just ridin' around, clearin' my head."
emmett gave him a look. "you gotta be careful out here, bro. streets don't sleep. especially with all the mess that's been goin' down."
"i hear you, emmett, but i ain't tryna sit in the house all night. gotta breathe, you feel me?" coogie shifted his weight, itching to get back on his bike.
"yeah, but you gotta stay smart. don't need to be out here catchin' no heat. i seen too many dudes get caught up in stupid shit."
coogie sighed, feeling emmett's words hit him harder than he expected. "you sound like somebody's old man," he joked, smirking.
emmett laughed, shaking his head. "somebody gotta say it. you young cats think y'all invincible out here. ain't nobody invincible."
coogie nodded, hopping back onto his bike. "i got you, man. i'll be straight. just stopping by the store, grabbing something to drink, and i'm out."
"aight, just keep your eyes open," emmett said, watching as coogie pushed off and pedaled away. "be safe, bro."
coogie waved back as he rode off, the weight of emmett's words still hanging over him as he headed to the store. not knowing ronnie was in the bushes watching his every move.
kasani
after school, papa, jake, and kasani were walking down a narrow alleyway, heading home. the day had been long, and they were just looking forward to getting back to their usual routine.
suddenly, kevin appeared, his face twisted with anger. without warning, kevin shoved jake. "you fake jake!"
jake stumbled back, glaring at kevin. "what you on, kevin? why you comin at me like that?"
kevin's face was flushed with frustration. "you went and asked out, you stole andrea from me. i was 'bout to ask her out!"
"seriously? that's what this is about?" jake shot back, his voice rising. "you think you she off limits just 'cause you like her?"
"you wasn't even tryin' to make a move until i did. now you mad?" kevin retorted, shoving jake again.
"yeah, 'cause you didn't give a damn about her until now. i made my move first. you ain't got no claim," jake said, pushing kevin back.
"kev, chill out!" kasani shouted, stepping between them. "this ain't the spot for this drama."
"mind your business, kasani!" kevin snapped. "this between me and jake."
kasani grabbed kevin's arm, trying to pull him away. "come on, kev, let's bounce."
kevin resisted for a moment but finally let kasani guide him away from jake. as they walked down the alley, they started hearing shouting from further up.
ronnie
ronnie paced back and forth, his eyes locked on coogie who stood there, flaunting jason's chain. every inch of him was boiling with anger.
coogie's presence was like a slap in the face, a constant reminder of the loss that had ripped through his life. the chain dangled mockingly, a symbol of jason's death, and ronnie couldn't stand it.
"yo, where'd you get that chain?" ronnie's voice cut through the air like a knife. he tried to keep his tone steady, but the fury was unmistakable.
coogie looked up, confusion masking his face. "what you talkin' about, man? this chain? i found it."
ronnie's fists clenched. "found it? that's my boy chain. you know damn well it's his. what'd you do, rob him? kill him?"
coogie's face twisted into a snarl. "man, I ain't killed nobody. I didn't even know it was his until you started trippin'."
"you expect me to believe that?" ronnie's voice was now a growl. "you're standin' here with his shit, actin' like it's nothing. you think I'm just gonna let that slide?"
coogie's jaw tightened. "you wanna take it? go ahead. take the chain if it means that much to you."
kevin
"what's all that noise?" kevin asked, frowning. "i don't know, but it sounds serious," kasani said, her voice tight. "they're arguing about a chain or something'."
as they approached the noise, they saw ronnie and coogie in a heated argument. kasani's eyes widened as she realized the situation was about to blow up.
kevin signaled for jake and papa to get down.
jake and papa quickly ducked behind some crates, looking for cover. kasani and kevin followed, staying low but still peaking to see whats happening. just as they did, they saw ronnie
ronnie
ronnie's eyes darkened as he saw the challenge in coogie's gaze. he couldn't let this go. not after everything. the anger bubbled over, and before he could think twice.
he pulled out his gun. the shot rang out, echoing through the street.
coogie's eyes widened in shock as he collapsed to the ground, the chain falling from his hand. ronnie's breathing was heavy.
his heart pounding as he turned his head to see kasani and kevin standing there, their faces frozen in horror.
kasani
the shot echoed through the alley, and coogie fell to the ground. kasani's heart stopped as she saw her friend collapse, lying motionless in front of them. kevin stared in shock, not fully understanding what was happening.
ronnie
the reality of what he'd just done hit him like a freight train. he saw kasani's eyes wide with fear, her hand gripping kevin's arm.
chest tightened, the weight of his actions sinking in. the argument, the angerβit was all too much. he had to get out, get away from this scene, from the look on kasani's face.
he turned away, stumbling as he tried to escape the chaos he'd just created.
kevin
"kasani, we gotta get outta here!" uukevin said, his voice shaking.
kasani nodded, still in shock. "let's go, now!"
jake, papa, and kasani quickly fled the scene, their hearts racing.
kasani glanced back at ronnie's cold gaze as they ran, the image of coogie's death seared into her memory.
