A few days had passed since the meeting with the Queen. Because she had expressed her wishes for them to live together, Charles made plans to move into Diana's Kensington apartment in the next few weeks. In separate bedrooms of course. They weren't completely ludicrous. But for the next week Charles would be staying with Diana because of joint appearances together. Some twisted idea of a family living under one roof.
Sunlight poured through Diana's lace curtains. The curtains seemed to be mocking her, everyone could see in but they gave the illusion of privacy, like the Royal Firm itself. Diana preferred to wake up on her own than have a maid wake her. It helped her pretend she lived a 'normal life' instead of being the future Queen of England. It was like reverse make believe that children would play. Instead of pretending to be a princess she was pretending to be a normal person.
After quickly dressing she made her way to the dining room. To her dismay Charles was there. She had hoped he would still be asleep. A look of annoyance also flashed over the prince's face. Apparently, they were both thinking the same thing. "Good morning." He mumbled. She flashed him a quick smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.
Food was spread out across the table. She made herself a plate of some toast and sausage. An awkward silence filled the room as they both ate. Both parties looking everywhere around the room except each other.
As Diana ate her food, she suddenly began to feel sick, like she was going to throw up. Without a word she got up from the table and ran to the lavatory and threw up into the toilet. She heard Charles come up behind her. "Are you alright?" He asked. He sounded concerned, which surprised Diana.
"Yes. It must have been something I ate." She flushed the toilet than rinsed out her mouth with some water.
"Are you sure you don't want to be checked by a physician?"
"Yes Charles. I'm sure it was just the food I ate last night." She found the concern kind of sweet.
"Do you think we need to cancel out engagement today?" He eyed her with worry.
"No. I'm already starting to feel better and I'm sure I'll feel fine by this afternoon."
"If you say so."

The next morning Diana was ill again but felt better throughout the day. It was the same the day after. On this particular day they had a joint engagement together to the opening of a park. The crowd of a few hundred people screamed and shouted as they stepped out of the car. Cameras flashed and shutters clicked all around them. It would be incredibly overwhelming for anyone who wasn't used to it. And Diana was used to it but it was still anxiety inducing.
After Charles gave a brief speech, they began to walk back to the cars. A sudden wave of dizziness passed over Diana and she began to see spots in her vision. "Charles..." She called weekly. He turned around just fast enough to see her faint and fall to the ground.
Luckily one of her bodyguards caught her. The crowd went silent but the cameras began to click with even more furry. Charles tried to keep his composure as the bodyguard brought her to the back seat of the car. The prince sat next to her and gently placed his suit jacket around her shoulders because he thought she looked cold in her dress. "Do you think she is going to be alright?" He asked the bodyguard.
"I have some medical training sir but I think we should take her back to Kensington to be examined by the Royal Physician."
"Very well, I trust your judgment."
Diana began to stir beside him. "Are you alright?" He hurriedly asked as she opened her eyes.
As she became more aware of her surroundings, it came back to her. "I could be better." She said with a little smirk.
He nodded; relief filled his body. It was then that she noticed the suit jacket around her shoulders. "What is this for?" she asked, gesturing to the jacket.
"Oh... that," He suddenly felt embarrassed about it. Even though she was his wife and his actions had not been that strange if it had occurred between any other couple. But they were not "any other couple". "You seemed cold, so I thought..." he trailed off.
"Thank you." She smiled at him. She knew what he meant by the gesture. Even though it had been small, when you were in a relationship as broken down as the Whales' marriage had become, it seemed huge as man landing on the moon.
They soon arrived at the palace and Diana was rushed to see the physician. After he ran a few tests on her, he left the room for a few minutes to process the results. "You really scared me today Diana." He spoke. She sat on the table while he stood next to her.
"Well once we figure out what's wrong with me we can see." She looked down at her hands, avoiding his gaze.
The doctor suddenly came back into the room. "I have some wonderful news your royal highnesses. The Princess is excepting!"
They both froze, shocked. Neither of them had expected that. "There are a few complications though. The Princess has a vitamin deficiency and low iron levels. She is also underweighted. It will be a difficult pregnancy and she will need lots of support. But congratulations your royal highnesses. I will give you some privacy now."
After he left the room Charles spoke. "I-I didn't expect we would have another child after Harry. But this is wonderful!"
"Oh, thank goodness you're happy! I was worried you might not want another child."
"Of course, I want another child Diana! The boys bring me so much joy and I cannot wait to expand our family." And for the first time in a long time, the Walses kissed. Not because there were cameras, not because they were trying to put on a show at a Polo match, but because they wanted to. It was tender and sweet. Full of happiness and love for their unborn child.
