15 March 1944
Tom and Freyja hadn't talked for about two months. He woke up on his birthday, without Freyja by his side. The only explanation was a letter she left that she was saying that an emergency happened and she had to leave. She also said that she will explain more to him when they get back to Hogwarts, but she didn't come back.
Deep inside him, Tom was hoping Freyja was dead. It was the only explanation he would accept as to why she left him, especially on his birthday. He had a feeling something bad happened. Maybe she was carrying his child. Or she died in an attempt to get rid of it.
He truly missed her. It was the second time he lost her. And just like the first, he felt a piece missing from his soul. If he had one. Tom tried contacting her multiple times but there were all worthless. She never responded to any of his letters and that one time he visited the O'Lone manor, he got kicked out by the house-elves and told to never come back.
Tom was desperately trying to get Freyja's attention but none of his attempts has worked. After seeing that nothing works, he decided to give up.
The current situation was very hard for him. Freyja was more than just a girlfriend to Tom. She was his best and only friend, his partner in crime, the only one that could understand him and save him from this mad place.
He felt like drowning without her and he hated it. He hated that he has become so dependent on her. He could never imagine, not even in his wildest dreams that he would feel this way for anyone other than himself.
He tried to replace her with different girls, sleeping with a different witch every other night, only to find out she wasn't replaceable.
Two years ago, she was someone he wanted to get rid of. An obstacle to his success. A villain in his fairytale. However now she was the biggest part of his story. Even though she was not a princess that needed saving, he felt like he was her knight saving her from her miserable life.
But she left with no explanation but a paper full of lies. Was it his mistake? Did he do anything wrong?
That was his only thoughts these two months. He couldn't help but overthink in potion class, while the professor was teaching another boring lesson.
Professor Slughorn dismissed the class and Tom quickly grabbed his books and motion to leave the classroom. But before he could pass the door, Slughorn's voice stopped him.
"Tom, m'boy, can I talk to you." Tom turned around and walked over to the front desk, as he waited for all the students to leave.
"I noticed that for the past couple of months, you are not the boy I was proud of. You don't turn in your homework, you are not paying attention in class, you are not studying. I talked with other professors and they all told me the same thing. You used to be a perfect student, what happened now? Is everything alright, do you want to talk about something that is occupying your mind?"
"I can assure you, professor, everything is perfectly fine. I am just unable of getting proper hours of sleep, every night so I am a little bit more tired. Besides that, there is nothing else that distracts my mind from your lesson. I'll try my best to become the excellent student I once was."
"I hope you do. You can go." Tom rapidly left the class and went to his room, since it was his final class of the day. He walked the stairs to his dorm. He opened the door and threw his bag to the bed, without noticing a person standing in front of his armchair.
"Hello Tom"
Tom turned around and faced the only person he was not expecting to see. "Freyja..."
"You look tired. Have you not been getting enough sleep? I specifically wrote you in my letter to take good care of yourself!"
"What are you doing here?" Freyja was not as tom was hoping she would be. She was a lot skinnier than she used to be. Dark circles were decorating her face, while her lips were chapped. Her eyes looked like they drained from life and that cheeky smirk she loved to do has disappeared. By looking at her, Tom thought that it would be better if she was dead. She looked very bad which made Tom wonder what kind of hardships she was going through. She seemed like she just came back from hell.
"What happened to you, darling?" Tom asked. Suddenly, all the anger he felt has transformed to worry. Worry about the love of his life having a hard life and not being able to take proper care of herself. Tom wanted to hug her feeble body, kiss her once soft and pink lips, caress her tangled hair. He wanted to touch her and keep her close to his body. Hold her tight so she never leaves again.
"I don't have enough time to explain. I am sorry that I left without letting you know, but I am going through a very hard situation. As you can imagine, I was pregnant but unfortunately I had a miscarriage."
"I am terribly sorry, but now you are here."
"Not for long. I came here just to say goodbye."
"What do you mean goodbye?"
"The muggle war is starting to effect our world too. They were multiple murder attempts against me and my mother the past three months. So, we have to leave."
"What do you mean? Go where? For how long?" Tom's eyes were starting to burn, while he was feeling a big discomfort in his throat. Tears were already streaming down Freyja's pale face, only in the thought of leaving her love again.
"I don't know for how long yet. It might be forever. It might be a couple of years. I might die before I leave. I do not know. My current life is unstable. We will go to muggle America and act like muggles."
A small tear run down Tom's right cheek. "What is happening? I have this itch inside my throat and now my face and eyes are wet..."
"Oh, sweetheart. You are crying."
"I don't like it." Freyja walked over to Tom and pull him in a close embrace. Her wet cheek staining his shirt. Tom's hug was her safe place. His right hand was slowly caressing her hair while his left was caressing her back, making sure she feels safe.
Tom had an intense urge to kiss her, but he was afraid that if he will, he won't be able to stop. He stepped away from Freyja's warm arms and cupped her cheek.
"A boy that made a girl stop crying and a girl that made a boy cry for the first time. Quite ironic, don't you think?" Tom said and pulled Freyja for a kiss. Their kiss wasn't lustful, passionate or erotic like any other time. That kiss was like fresh air. The medicine that was keeping them alive.
"Promise me that you will come back"
"Remember, the fact that we can sit right here and say goodbye means that we already won."
"We had some good times, didn't we?"
"We did. And I will remember them forever. Goodbyes are temporary. Because this is not the end. We will meet again"
Goodbye never felt more bittersweet. Before her, Tom did not know he had a heart. She made him acknowledge that he had one.
"Don't forget me. I promise, darling. I will see your face again. Goodbye."
Freyja climbed out of the window, the same way she got inside the room.
Tom was left sitting in his bed. Hot tears running down his face. He felt his heartbreak into million pieces. He closed his eyes shut, feeling a terrible ache in his chest. His heart was bleeding. The only time he pulled his guard down. He will never do it again. He wanted to squish Freyja in his arms until the pain stops.
He never felt more sorrowful. More empty. She made him vulnerable and weak. And that's what got him feeling like that. A heart in love is easy to break. He was so madly in love with her. He was dreaming of them ruling the world together. Becoming the dark king and queen of the wizarding world.
But now his dreams are shattered and he is left with a ghost of her. A ghost of the woman he would sacrifice his life for. He was sitting in his bed, thinking of all the times he felt like life was worth continuing because he had her in his life. Now everything seemed wrong.
His life seemed like a painful but beautiful lie. Like a knife stabbing him straight in his heart. He already missed her. He misses all the times he should have said I love you. All the times he should have held long into the hug. Or hold her closer while they sleep. Because it might have been the last time.
He couldn't recognize the feeling he felt. He felt grief. He felt all the joy leaving his life and now he could never feel happy again. He felt like there will not be a happily ever after for him.
He felt a tightness in his chest. He wanted to forget all the nice feelings she made him feel. He wanted to not be able to feel again. Happiness, sadness. Nothing.
His mind was vague. He couldn't think straight. Only that he had everything but he didn't know it until he had nothing.
Freyja wasn't here and he was left with nothing but a broken heart and memories.
