as days turned into weeks, joy found herself becoming less joyful in response to depressions consistent rejection. she wouldn't have believed that rejection would affect her this much, but it felt different with depression.

nobody ever really rejected joy's joy and this was a whole new feeling to the girl. she found herself growing less motivated, her focus in classes was starting to lessen, and she wasn't taking part in normal activities she always used to take part in.

but joy was determined to not let this get to her and she wanted to have another try at getting depression to open up. depression deserved to feel joy and happiness and the girl made it her mission to bring it to him.

joy was seated in her chair ready for the maths lesson of the day, when depression entered, a tired expression on his face. she could see he was clearly exhausted, a yawn passing his lips as he slumped into his seat.

depression rubbed his eyes, as he placed his backpack by his feet, pulling out a pen and his notebook.

"GOOD MORNING BESTFRIEND!", joy beamed. "how are we today?!"

"i'm tired," depression yawned, not bothering to look at the girl.

"hi tired, i'm joy!", the girl joked, a bright smile on her face as she stifled a laugh.

depression studied the girl for a moment, only then noticing how beautiful she was. he couldn't help but admire the smile on her face that was always there. he began to get lost in her y/e/c eyes before quickly snapping himself out of the trance and looking away.

"shut up," he deadpanned, returning to clicking his pen.

joy's face held a defeated expression, but she quickly shook it off and attempted to place her smile back on her face. she didn't want to leave it there, she wanted one last try to get depression to crack, and that meant pulling a big move.

later that day, joy was knocking at depressions front door. she wanted to ask him something in person, so that's how she found herself walking across her front yard to next door where depression lived.

the girl was never one to dress up for a person, and she never wore makeup. but before she left her house she found herself applying some blush to her cheeks along with some mascara and lipgloss. she curled her hair and wore a cute yellow skater dress with her converse to match. she wasn't sure why she put all this effort in for depression but she just did.

"god get me through today," depression sighed as he opened the front door.

he reopened his eyes and looked down slightly to the small girl who stood in front of his door, her signature smile on her face.

"i know i'm asking five months too early," joy began. "but, depression, will you go to prom with me?"

depression was too exhausted to even comprehend anything that was happening, so he ignored the girl and closed the front door. joy flinched at the front door which was now slammed shut in her face.

she stood frozen in her spot in front of depressions door, a sinking feeling of defeat in her stomach. she had never felt this feeling before, it was strange, it was weird and she wished she never had to experience it again.

a small drop of water dripped down the girls cheeks, her blinking in confusion and wiping her face. she looked down to her fingers which were now wet. she furrowed her brows, continuing to wipe at the water streaming down her cheeks with shaky hands.

"what is t-his?", she whispered aloud, her voice breaking slightly.

joy was crying.

joy had never experienced this before. nobody had ever been able to make the joyful, happy girl cry, until now. she immediately ran home, storming up her stairs and ignoring her happy parents calls.

the tears streamed down her cheeks uncontrollable as she entered her bedroom, slamming the door behind her, her back flush against it.

she let out a small sob, the unfamiliar sound making her more confused as she slid down the door, her body crashing to the floor. her hands were over her mouth as she cried, them muffling her sobs.

and for the first time ever, joy wasn't joyful.

...

two days later, the weekend was over and joy was back to school. except she was no longer joyful.

everyone watched in confusion as the girl slowly walked down the corridors, adorned in a black pair of jeans and a grey shirt. her usual yellow attire was replaced with dark attire, her mood was dull and people were utterly confused.

joy turned up to maths class late, muttering a quiet, weak apology to her teacher before heading to the back of the class. she dropped her bag to the floor and slumped into her seat beside depression.

depression had his brows furrowed as he awaited joy's normal bubbly morning greeting, but when there was nothing of the sorts, he looked up to the girl confused. he noticed the lack of colour in her clothes, the lack of a smile on her beautiful face. she looked...sad.

"you're not talking?", he spoke up.

no answer.

he furrowed his brows once more, studying the girls blank expression.

"you okay?", he asked softly.

joy quickly looked up.

"since when did you care?!", she snapped, her voice void of any emotion.

depression was taken aback. this was very out of character for joy. he instantly noticed that the usual sparkle in her eyes was...gone.

joy was no longer joyful.
