It took some convincing but finally, I was able to slip away from the guys. Not, of course, without first being given a lecture in being careful as well as two guns and a knife to slide inside my boot. The level of trust here is so inspiring, I thought to myself with a roll of my eyes as I walked to the small Dollar General we'd passed on the way here. The parking lot was deserted, of course, apart from the stray walker or two but I took them down easily before making my way into the store. Upon scanning the aisles, being careful of walkers and humans alike, I found that it was still half-way stocked. Most people when this stuff broke out just went to Walmart or Ingles to ransack, leaving small little general stores like this one nearly completely untouched.
I mean, it was mostly dented cans and old bags of stale chips left but, hey, it would do. I was a Dixon, I'd learned to adapt to any situation I was in. Snatching a bag of Cheddar Ruffles from the top shelf, I stuffed into the olive-green cross-body bag at my side before striding over to the medicine section. Most of that had been filched already, leaving the shelf barren. A frustrated sigh escaped my lips, a strand of dark hair falling in my face as I searched everywhere for what I was looking for. I cursed under my breath with a kick at the metal shelf, making it creak.
It nearly toppled, shaking slightly, before a groan erupted from behind it. My head snapped to the sound and I quickly retrieved the knife from my boot as a walker came limping around the shelf towards me. It was a gnarly one, that's for sure - its skull had been smashed in slightly, leaving brain matter to run down the side of its cheek or rather, what was left of its cheek for there was a large chunk of flesh missing just where its teeth were, making his dirty, yellow teeth very visible. The knife in my hand slipped slightly but I gripped it tight and slashed at the walkers' feet, taking him down to the ground with a thud. He gnashed his teeth together, his outstretched hands still making grabbing motions at me. But he instantly stopped as I sunk my knife into the remainder of his skull before removing it with a loud squelching sound.
I smirked down at the conquered walker briefly, breathing heavily as I got up on wobbly legs. That was an ordeal. I was still contemplating where I'd go next to look for the item I needed when suddenly, my eyes locked on a small, rectangular blue box that had evidently fallen off the shelf as I had kicked it. Apparently, it had been hidden behind some empty boxes. Probably someone had been pillaging for cold medicine and it just had gotten shoved to the back somehow. Quickly, I raced over to snatch it up, shaking it slightly to make sure the item was still inside.
I grinned when I heard it rattle around - music to my ears! Throwing it into my back, I made my way over the debris littering the floor and outside again. The trek back to Alexandria was long and took me nearly over an hour on foot but finally, I reached the rusted gates. They slid open for me almost immediately, just as soon as the man at the gate had noticed me waiting. Quickly, I trotted past him and towards the house I shared with my fiancee. When I had made it inside, I began to shake off the boots on my feet by the door.
"Carl! Babe, you home?" I called out into the air, finally shaking the last shoe free and letting it fall to the floor with a thud.
Silence answered me and I shrugged before bounding up the stairs quickly to the bathroom we shared. Heaving the cross-body bag onto the floor after I had fished out the box, I quickly closed the door behind me and glanced down at the fine print. Never in my life had I done this before. Not even when it first happened. Of course, it had been different then - I'd had someone to help. But now, I was on my own.
Well, at least with this aspect of it. Sighing to myself and shaking my head, I emptied the contents into my hand before following the instructions to the letter. After I'd finished doing what it had said, I waited...and waited. The box said to wait an hour but it felt like the longest hour of my life as I paced across the carpet in the bedroom - the item lying face-up on the dresser in front of me. My feet sunk into the softness of the flooring and I sighed again, digging my toes into it. Drat! Why was it taking so long?!
Another, this time frustrated, sigh escaped my mouth and I sat down on the bed behind me. But just as my behind hit the comforter, the item in front of me beeped and I sprang up, racing over to grab it. The small plus signs blinked up at me and I felt tears of joy fill my eyes. A grin split my face and I slid one of my hands over my flat stomach, feeling happiness rise up inside of me.
Positive.
Note: Okay, so I know the title was a bit of a dead giveaway hahaha but I couldn't help myself. So are y'all shocked?! Angel's pregnant again!! ^_^
