FIRST MAN is a single by south korean singer, rapper, and dancer min. the song was released digitally on june 16th, 2021 by B2M entertainment and sony music entertainment. written and sung entirely in english, the song is about min's father, as she has a back and forth conversation with him, trying to ease his worries about the relationship she is in. she promises that her lover is the right one for her, simultaneously thanking her father for everything he'd done for her up until that point in her life.

𝟬𝟭. this song was the first one she wrote for her album, romance. she walked into the studio, talked about her dad for a bit to the songwriters, and just got really emotional. she's said this is a song that she could hear again in 80 years time and still cry over.

𝟬𝟮. min planned for the song to be released on this day for a specific reason; it was the day her ex broke up with her. on that same day, her father sat her down and told her about heartbreak, promising he'd always be there for her in the future. since she's certain that was the day his protectiveness grew tenfold, this song is almost like reassurance for him, that she's still doing fine.

𝟬𝟯. the music video was a montage of moments from min's childhood, with some clips of her family, mostly her dad.

𝟬𝟰. despite the sensitive and personal subject matter, the song went on to debut at #1 on the billboard hot 100, going back and forth between number one and two on both this chart and the melon & gaon music chart for 13 weeks (against butter—ironic, isn't it?). min was kind of blown away at the blueming-like success this song had.

𝟬𝟱. yes, min imagined most of this thing up. she never got to have this conversation with her father for her current relationship, and with her last relationship, it never got as far as this.
