KAGEYAMA STEPS OUT of the club room, inhaling. he peers over the railing for any sign of movement, he leans back and makes his way down the stairs. he finds the girl sitting down on the pavement, staring at her phone screen in a bored fashion.
"hey, idiot," kageyama croaked out, standing three feet away from her. yumi's eyes look up, the corners of her lips moving upwards. she pushes herself off of the ground, rubbing off any excess dirt from her bottom.
"sup kags, how've you been?" she rushes next to his side, her fingers ever so slightly brushing along his.
"been better," he makes a turn. yumi trailing behind him, struggling to keep up with his long strides. "you?" he turns to look at her only to find her with a hand on her forehead, repeatedly swiping away the sweat.
"sorry, you just walk really fast," she attempts to chuckle but it was cut short as she had run out of breath once again. kageyama walks over to her, awkwardly placing his arm on the small of her back. yumi holds her breath, what on earth was he doing?
she turns to look up at him, "i'm okay, no need to w-worry," the brunette stammers, she gulps nervously. kageyama immediately takes a step back, an uncomfortable silence fills the air.
kageyama clears his throat awkwardly, "y-you can stay out here as long as you'd like. the club room's the first door," he nods his head at her, the familiar pink hue dusted onto his cheeks once again. he makes his way up the stairs, looking over at yumi before stepping inside of the club room filled with loud shouts of frustration.
yumi lets out the breath she had been holding, "holy shit," she whispered to herself, pushing her hands onto her knees. she takes another gulp of air, trying to compose herself. was it possible that hinata and kenma were right about his feelings? what kageyama just did now was excruciatingly obvious.
her thoughts begin to overflow her mind; things such what if, hopefully, maybe. she shakes her head, giving herself a hard smack to the face. "tell him about it later," she mumbles to herself, making her way up to the club room.
she turns the knob to the club room, expecting nothing but silence but was surprised to hear shoyo's familiar chaotic voice. "yumi, you headass!" shoyo abandons kageyama and rushes over to the said girl, wrapping his arms around her neck whilst jumping onto her.
"oof," yumi holds shoyo's back as she tried to keep his weight up. "get off, man. you know i'm not strong enough to carry someone," she tries to let him down gently but because of shoyo's tight grip on her the both of them come tumbling down.
a giggle escaped both of their lips. yumi clasped her hand on her mouth, though her eyes creased and anybody could tell that she was smiling underneath it all. she pushes shoyo off of her chest with a few struggles, finally being able to stand up on two feet.
everybody watches as shoyo tries to stand up without completely falling over, a goofy grin pasted on.
"look at that, he can't even stand up," tsukishima stares at shoyo getting up, he turns his back to him; retrieving the papers from yachi. the light hair colored girl nudges him in the stomach roughly, her brows furrowing.
"miyazaki," nishinoya's voice fills her ears, she turns around swiftly to find the shorter boy and bald guy practically runs over to her. the duo wraps their arms around her body with wide smiles. "lemme join in!" shoyo rushes towards them, hopping on whoever was in front of him.
"call me yumi, you guys," she tries to say, but it comes out muffled because she's pressed up against tanaka's chest. she lifts her head up from the three of them in desperate need of air.
they finally dispersed from the crowd, giving yumi her needed space. "here," kageyama hands his bottled water to her. she mutters a 'thank you' before taking a swig of the drink. "you okay, now?" the raven-haired boy steps in front of her, inspecting her as she takes another gulp of water.
she gives him a nod as well as a tired smile, tossing him the plastic bottle at the same time. "sorry, miya- i mean, yumi. we got a bit excited," tanaka chuckles sheepishly, his eyes shutting as he apologizes. the said girl shakes her head, quickly trying to reassure them.
"i shouldn't be bothering you guys, though. keep studying, i guess?" everybody in the room nodded, focusing on their work once again.
yumi looks to the blonde girl that was staring at her, yachi, was it? yumi makes her way to where yachi was, plopping down on the seat next to her.
"yachi, right? i'm yumi," she sticks her hand out, full of pure confidence. the blonde looks down, eyes darting from between yumi's extended hand and her owns. she takes it, looking up at yumi whilst she tried to conceal the smile that was sprouting from her lips.
"i saw you earlier, right? you were on call with kageyama?" she asks to which yumi nods with optimistic, shining eyes. "wah, so you and him, huh?" she smiles, fiddling with her fingers that were set her lap.
yumi's tired eyes shoot open, she feels blood rushing to her cheeks and the tips of her ears. "huh? what's wrong?" yachi takes a look at yumi's face, immediately sensing something she said was wrong. "oh, no! i hope i didn't offend you or anything!" yachi suddenly clasps her hands together, pressing her forehead to it.
"no, no, nothing's wrong," yumi takes her hands into hers, desperately trying to reassure her before somebody hears their conversation. "kageyama and i aren't dating, though." as she said this to the other girl, her eyes only showed more embarrassment. yumi thinks it would be best to not let anybody know of keiji unless she were asked about it.
"i'm so, so sorry for misunderstanding," yachi exclaims once again, standing up from her seat with her eyes closed.
"yachi, can you please check my answers? i'm still confused," shoyo whines desperately, his bottom lip jut out. yachi gives her companion another apology before rushing to the orange-haired freak's aid.
kageyama stares at the the girl yachi had left, she was currently inhaling and exhaling deeply; as if she was trying to calm herself down from a previous event.
the boy quickly gathers his items from the table, pressing his free hand against the wooden floor to push himself up. it only takes a couple steps for him to stand in front of her.
yumi continues to play with her fingers until she felt a pair of eyes staring her down, hesitating; the girl looks up slowly, greeted with the blue eyes that always brought a comforting aura with it.
"hey, dummy." he greeted.
that sentence alone just brought butterflies to her stomach, "you should be over there," yumi points to his previous spot while he took a seat next to her; setting his things down. "studying." she said breathlessly as her eyes met his oceanic ones.
yumi tears her eyes away from kageyama's, she had to resist the urge to just lean over and kiss his lips. she couldn't do that in public, especially when kageyama himself believes that she's in a relationship.
"yachi's busy helping hinata and tsukishima-" he pauses, glancing over at the tall teenager, "tsukishima is being tsukishima. so, i came to you," he hands her the paper. yumi pauses; scanning the work, giving him a serious look before bursting into a fit of giggles.
"sorry, kags but you've asked the wrong person to help you," she informs him before handing the paper back to him. kageyama soon lets out a tiny 'hmph', before shoving the paper to the back of his packet.
"i've had enough of this studying bullshit," he mutters, letting the stack of papers drop to the ground. it wasn't relatively loud but everybody in the room could agree that they too were done for the day.
"y'know, if you've had enough of reviewing," yumi nudges the side of his stomach, her eyes glinting mischievously. "maybe you'll let me help you practice?" her smile was all it took for kageyama to oblige. he'd take the opportunity to practice volleyball with his crush anyday.
kageyama walks up to tanaka, his hand stuck out expectantly, "may i have the keys to the gym, please?" he asks shyly, his face turned away from the other male.
tanaka smirks as he looks at the female behind kageyama, "hm, alright. have fun, kids!" yumi stares at tanaka, her eyes wide in disgust. the boy stares at him in confusion before taking the keys from the older one, slipping out of the club room with yumi following close behind.
"what am i helping you with anyways?" she walks ahead of him, her arms tucked on her back.
"nothing drastic," he tells her, walking down the stairs with the girl leading. he swings the keys around his finger, the identical frown on his face as he walks down the stairway. "i'll just practice my serves, and you can catch them."
"ball girl, huh?" she turns to look back at him with a smile, "sounds like fun. maybe i can try a serve or two?" she clasps her hands together, pausing her step to wait for kageyama to walk beside her.
kageyama snorts loudly, believing what she said was a joke before he takes a good look at how serious his friend was. "you wanna try?" kageyama's amusement quickly turns into excitement when seeing yumi nod her head with a beaming smile.
"i wouldn't have said it if i didn't want to," she utters, walking closer to the dark haired boy. she looks down at her shoes, her eyes taking notice of his large hand.
her hands moving on its own, she loops her arm around his. she had done this once before so it couldn't have hurt to do it again, right? kageyama stiffens once feeling the contact between of the girl's arm wrapped around his. nonetheless, he continued to trudge on forward with her arm around his.
"onwards, to the gym." she declares, her finger pointed to the air. kageyama tries to hide the smile he's been trying to conceal ever since she had looped their arms together. oh, how he had failed.
kageyama grins at the space in front of him, yumi looks up to see his expression, quickly falling awestruck. his smile quickly falls as soon as he notices her staring. "if you keep staring like that, you could go blind," he grumbles, the developing flush on his face proved otherwise.
"you should smile more, it's a pretty sight to see."
