Armani ran as fast as she could all the way down to the basketball court without pausing for any break. She didn't stop until she reached the gated entrance and her heart dropped seeing a police officer still standing with his weapon out, and another police officer yelling at him.
Her heart dropped when she ran closer to the scene and saw Raseem laying beside LJ with wounds but they were still breathing. Raseem had a tear in his eye and a hand over his chest holding the wound looking up at Armani.
"Momma don't let me die please." He pleaded. "I know I did alot of bad but please don't let me die."
Nasir wasted no time to pull off the shirt he's wore and pressed it to the wound. An ambulance can be heard coming closer and closer to the scene but Armani felt like she couldn't breathe. She struggled for breath as she did her best to cover LJ's wound using her sweater and looked over at the officer.
"You shot him! He ain't do shit and you tried to kill him!" Jamarcus yelled through his tears pointing directly at the officers.
The officer himself looked shocked that he had actually did it and that caused Armani to rage.
"Momma am I gonna die?" Raseem asked with tears in his eyes.
"No baby," Armani says. "Please focus on your breathing, mommas got you"
Armani went over the procedure she knew until finally the ambulance arrived and they wasted no time to get the two boys.
"I'm going to ruin your life. I put that on my life, I'm going to ruin your entire family life officer James." Armani pointed her finger at the cop who had shot him.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to shoot him! I have a family please!" The man pleaded with Armani further pissing her off as she neared the ambulance and got in.
"I'm going to ruin your life. If they don't kill you in prison they'll take you out in the streets. Consider your life at risk." Was the last thing Armani said before she gave Kamala instructions to bring Karizzy and everyone else to the hospital. The ambulance doors closed when she got her last words out and was now headed towards the hospital at full speed. Armani checked both boys pulse to make sure they were still breathing and they were. She didn't know how to felt, she felt a kind of numbnessβthe same numbness she felt when her mother died. She swallowed the lump in her throat as they made their way to the hospital, and grabbed Nasirs hands. Nasir's face showed nothing but evident hate and Armani wanted to distract him from it, once she took his hands she began to pray and he closed his eyes breathing heavily.
Armani could feel her heart pulsating as they got out of the ambulance and they rolled the boys bodies in yelling out codes she couldn't process at the moment.
Lord don't take my baby from me...I had some good news for him in store too...don't fail me now...
Armani's anxiety was at its peak and she began to have a panic attack as the news hit her that this moment was in fact real life. The numbness had hit her along with her soberness and she couldn't handle the feeling. Nasir raised his voice at the secretary almost immediately once it seemed she was going off topic and demanded to know where they should go. The lady jumped at the sound of the anger in his voice and stuttered as she got the floor number out.
The rest of the family had arrived at the time and they all ran to the elevator. They crammed inside when the elevator opened and went up to floor four expecting to be allowed inside the boys room. They were told that both boys were currently in surgery so they were forced into the waiting room. Armani called LJ's mother and choked back tears as she told her the information and everything that had happened. LJ's mother wasted no time to get into her car and arrived fifteen minutes after the phone call. She cried when she joined the family in the waiting room and everyone sat in silence.
"I'm going to ruin his life....I swear to God I'm going to ruin his life." Armani mumbled over and over again as she sat beside Nasir who was fuming and hardly containing his anger.
Armani and Nasir both felt like they failed as parents at that exact moment. Nasir felt that as a father, he was supposed to teach his son to become a man and protect his children-- he felt that he failed at protecting Raseem and it was eating at him. Armani knew she had done a good job at raising her boy but she also felt that there was more she could do. She rummaged through her mind trying to figure out what more she could have possibly done, but couldn't come up with an answer. She didn't want to lock her sons up for the rest of their lives but she also didn't want freedom to be the reason they die. She felt sick to her stomach thinking about what could be going on in the operating room, so she ran to the bathroom and right on cue she vomited letting out whatever it was that was in her stomach.
Armani came out of the bathroom once she was sure she wasn't going to vomit for a third time, and stumbled back over to her seat with the family. Silence took over the entire waiting room and anger was in the air. Armani and Nasir was both snapped out of their thoughts when a chair flew across from the room releasing the pent up anger everyone else had. People cursed and threatened the hospital therapy and began to throw things demanding more information. The yelling continued for a short while until finally both LJ's mom and Armani stood and demanded peace. Both of them were hurt because both of them had taught their boys the rules, they never thought that the rules would actually have to be used on their sons and it hurt.
Everyone expressed their anger in a more quiet tone of respect for Armani and Raniya who had hardly spoke but sobbed in the corner of the room she sat.
The more time went by, the more Armani got lost in her thoughts and began to realize some things. Reality was like a comedic show and black mothers and children were the joke. White folks were the script writers and the cameramen, and freedom was the butt of the joke. Whites would write the script to fit what they wanted and if it didn't fit, another black mother lost a child. If the script did fit, the child had a chance at survival. Black mothers were made a comedic joke since the beginning of time, and the introduction of "freedom" and it was admittedly hitting Armani like a train.
Nasir sat with his jaw locked and deep in thought not noticing the many others who lined up to quietly curse out the secretary again. Armani sat deep in her head trying to distract herself because every time the face of the cop flashed her mind, she wanted to kill him more and more. The clock ticked by furthering the anger in everyone and frustration that was seemingly thickening the air.
The clock ticked and it seemed as time was slowing as they waited for more information. Armani watched as different people asked for more information and bit her lip hearing the exact same thing they had heard the past couple of hours-- there wasn't any new information available.
"Gosh there acting like wild fucking animals." Said a Karen louder than she hoped causing every eye to turn towards the girl.
"Say what? Say it with your chest big bruh." Aria was the first to get up.
"Say it with your chest bitch." Tee tee said standing up beside her sister.
"I said! Y'all are acting like wild animals! Why can't you people act civilized God! These people are doing their fucking best and here you are proving that you people are animals!" She yelled at the two girls. Armani had no energy to acknowledge the white woman as she normally would, and frankly did not feel the need to when Aria ran over there with Tee Tee right behind her and got in the grown woman's face.
"I thought I said say it to my face, not across the room." Aria said. "I'm in your face so say it one more time so I can be sure I heard you. I'm not in the right mindset shawdy so don't play with me."
"You see she's threatening me Bailey!" Karen turned towards the girl who was recording.
"Hey niggers! Go back to your habitat over there and act a fool! This side isn't for your kind!" Bailey yelled and that was enough for Aria to punch her so hard she had fallen out the seat.
Tee tee wasted no time to punch the karen girl in her nose breaking it and proceeding to whooping their ass. No one took it upon themselves to break the fight up, so they watched and let it continue until finally Aria and Tee Tee were done. Aria spat on the girl and kicked her hard before she returned back to her seat trying to fix her bun.
The girls they had fought had gotten up from their curled position and when everyone could see their face, they busted out laughing at the sight of all of the blood leaking and heavy black eyes they had both received. It was obvious both the girls noses were bleeding and they were going in and out of consciousness, but no one really cared feeling that both the girls deserved the beating they recieved.
"Damn you can't even cover the level of fucked they did y'all with makeup." Said another white girl in the building holding her daughters hand. "Sweetie this is why I say to be nice and not judge by race, it gets you fucked up and beat up."
Once they helped the girls out of the room to get some care done to their face, the clock seemed to begin to tick more tauntingly now before the door finally swung open. Everyone's eyes averted to the doctor who had came out holding his clipboard and anticipation took over the room.
"Family of LJ Hudson and Raseem Carter." He said making more than half the room jump up as they awaited more information anxiously. The doctor had said nothing else as he looked around the room in astonishment at the amount of people in attendance for the little boy, further pissing off Nasir and both mothers of the boys.
"Sir with all due respect, read the shit before I fuck you up!" Raniya yelled making the doctor cough and blush feeling embarrassed. He looked down at the paper and read the result before him making everyone that listened eyes widen.
Both boys had made it.
