xxiii. SIGHT UNSEEN

β€”β€”β€”

When Janelle regained consciousness, she tried to look to around, forgetting that she was wearing a blindfold for a second. She sighed, twisting her wrists around in hopes of making them loosen up, but there was no point.

Being forced to use her other senses, she heard the sound of someone chanting. She didn't recognize the language, but she sure as hell knew the voice.

"What now, Esther? Putting a hex on me because I 86'd one of your henchmen? Which by the way, he wasn't that great at his job," Janelle laughed, making the room fall silent.

"Something like that." Esther came around to Janelle and stared at her before hesitantly removing the blindfold.

Janelle excepted to be greeted with Esther's face, but instead, she didn't see anything. Her eyebrows furrowed and she rapidly blinked her eyes, only to see the same thing.

Nothing.

"I can't see," Janelle whispered to herself, quickly turning scared. "W-Why can't I see? Esther, what have you done?"

"In order for me to go through with the ritual, I need your cooperation. That'd be more than difficult on my end if you kept trying to fight me off. This way, it will be easier for both of us."

Janelle became livid. "So you stole my eyesight, so I wouldn't have to witness the death of my own child? How is that supposed to be easier for me?!" she screamed at Esther, trying harder to get out of her restraints, so she could pounce on her.

"Once the child is gone, I will reverse the spell. But in the meantime, I suggest you start saying your goodbyes. We only have a few hours left before this is all over."

The way Esther spoke so calmly about all of this, made her question if this woman really is crazy. Which she was wrong. Esther was beyond crazy.

The thought of her brothers suddenly came into Janelle's mind.

She knew they were out searching for her, but all she could do was pray that they'd rescue her sooner rather than later. It's only been a day, at least that's how long Janelle thought it was, but she believed that her brothers weren't going to stop until they found her.

Because she would do the exact same for them.

Although, she wondered if they had contacted Klaus. Janelle wouldn't have been mad if they did, but she wouldn't be extremely ecstatic about it either.

Since everything's now unfolded and it's been proven Esther is the reason for the recent chaos in town, Janelle couldn't help, but feel a bit disappointed in herself for not letting Klaus know earlier.

He had a right to know what was going on with his girlfriend, and child. At least that way, Janelle wouldn't be in this mess.

And Cassandra...

That was going to stick with Janelle forever.

She blamed herself for getting one of the people she loved most killed. Cassandra did so much for Janelle, even outside of witchcraft. She was like a second mother to her. But now she's gone.

So with her no longer around, the coven is even more at stake. Everyone's powers would be limited until a new Head Witch came along. And there's no telling when that was going to happen.

It all depended on a matter of time.

β€”β€”β€”

"Come on, Kai. Are you done yet?" Damon came around to the warlock, crossing his arms over his chest.

Kai's concentration was broken once again for the eighth time today. Honestly, the locator spell that he's been doing since the night before was getting them anywhere. Esther's magic was preventing them from finding Janelle, but they didn't know that.

Not yet at least.

Kai opened one eye, peeking out at Damon before glaring at him. He looked over at Stefan, "I can't focus if he keeps breaking my concentration every five seconds."

Stefan placed his hand on Damon's shoulder, pulling him back a little, "Come on. Let's give him some space."

Damon downed the rest of his drink and slammed his glass onto the table. He rolled his eyes and walked into the kitchen.

Stefan followed after him and leaned against the door frame as he watched Damon randomly search through cabinets. "What are you doing?"

"Keeping my hands busy, so I don't strangle that little weasel," Damon replied, bluntly. He needed a distraction and this was how he chose to do so. "You know, you'd think that saving the life of the girl he claims to love would be enough motivation for Kai to work a somewhat faster, but clearly that ship has sailed."

"Kai is doing everything he can, Damon," Stefan said. "Have a little faith."

"I've put my faith in nearly everyone we've ever come across into saving our sister, but that still continues to get us nowhere. So, this ends now," Damon stated, leaning against the counter in front of him, earning a confused look from Stefan. "It doesn't matter who it is, or how much power they have β€” there isn't anyone in the world that protect Janelle like we can."

"What are you saying, Damon?" Stefan asked.

"I'm saying, let's go save our sister," he answered.

Stefan pushed Damon back as he approached him, "Okay before you doing anything hasty, let's keep in mind that we don't even know where she is. Have you at least called Klaus?"

"Did you seriously not hear a word of what I just said?" Damon asked, rhetorically. "Of course I didn't call Klaus, and like hell, I'm even going to."

"Well, this has a lot more to do with him than it does with us. And like it, or not, he cares about Janelle just as much as we do. We could use the extra muscle, anyways."

"Did you ever stop to think that if we didn't let Janelle move out in the first place, she wouldn't have gotten pregnant, and she wouldn't be in this mess?"

"And did you ever stop to think that if she didn't, she would've never came home?" Stefan retorted.

Damon shook his head, "Janelle doesn't even want him here. So you can be the one to deal with her after she finds out, and tears your head off."

"That won't be necessary," a voice suddenly said, making to two brothers turn their heads. "Sorry for barging in unexpectedly, but you guys don't exactly use the locks in this house."

"Do we know you?" Stefan questioned the unknown man who stood at the entrance of the room.

"No, but I know you." That sparked up Stefan and Damon's attention real quick. "I'm Aiden," he introduced himself.

Damon vamped over to the Aiden, holding him up by the collar of his shirt. "All right. This has been a monumentally bad day in a sea of bad days. So I'm gonna need to know who you are, what you're doing here, and how it relates to me, or I'm gonna rip your throat out."

"Okay, I get it. You're upset, but if you want to find your sister, then I strongly advise that you don't kill me."

"Tell us where she is," Damon demanded.

"Esther's holding her at the old Mikaelson Mansion here in Mystic Falls. She has a lot of werewolves guarding the house, so I think it'd be best if you got Klaus over here now. You won't stand a chance without the extra backup."

"Hold up," Stefan interrupted. "Esther Mikaelson? That's not possible. Alaric killed her three years ago and the Other Side is gone. There's no way she could've survived that."

"While that may be true, Esther is still a powerful witch. Even in death, she managed to channel herself through others, until she found her original body. Magic may work in mysterious ways β€”"

"But it always works," Stefan finished for him, remembering the familiar words from his sister.

That was enough confirmation for Damon to know that Aiden's story checked out and he knew where Esther was keeping Janelle.

Aiden nodded, "I should get going. Esther will get suspicious if I'm not back in time."

"Wait. You didn't tell us you were working with her," Damon interjected. "How do we know this isn't a trap?"

"Because it isn't," Aiden assured. "I may be helping Esther, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I want to, and that goes for some of the other werewolves she has helping her as well. Janelle is my friend, their friend. She did a lot for us. I don't want to see her have to go through the loss of losing a child that's she's been wanting for years. That's why I'm relying on you to save her before it's too late."

With that, Aiden walked out, leaving Stefan and Damon there with questionable stares. The two them trailed after him, Stefan asking, "And when exactly is too late?"

Aiden checked the watch on his wrist, "It's 8 o'clock now. Esther's planning on removing the child before midnight."

"That only leaves us another four hours."

Hearing a set of people talking, Kai got up from his spot on the couch to see what was going on. "Who's he?"

"Forget that. Cloaking spell. Are you strong enough to put one on the three of us?" Damon asked, pointing to everyone besides Aiden.

"Of course," Kai nodded, still not completely understanding what a cloaking spell would be needed for just yet.

"You're gonna need more than that," Aiden announced. "The house is protected by Esther's magic. The only way you can get in is if you're wearing one of these." Aiden held up his hand to show them his Moonlight ring.

"And I'm guessing you don't happen to have three more of those in your pocket." Damon sarcastically grinned to which Aiden shook his head. "Great."

"But there are guards keeping an eye on the place outside. Take them out and you can steal their rings."

Damon furrowed his eyebrows, "Aren't those guards a part of your pack? You really sure you want us to kill them?"

"Doesn't mean I have to like them," Aiden commented.

"Can someone please tell me what the hell is happening right now?" Kai asked impatiently.

"We're going to go save my sister."

β€”β€”β€”

Janelle jolted awake when she suddenly felt herself being harshly thrown onto a table. Her blindfold was gone, but it wasn't like that would have made a difference.

She was still blind.

Her hands were chained above her head while her feet were left alone. The room was extremely hot and Janelle heard the sound fire crackling beside her. She didn't want to think about what Esther had in store for her child's demise, so she decided it would be easier to distract her for as long as she could.

Heels clicked against the ground and Janelle knew someone else had entered the room. It was clearly a woman, so she could only assume it was Esther. But she was wrong.

"It seems like we're going to have to be working ahead a schedule this time."

Janelle knew that voice all too well. "Davina?"

"Well, don't look so surprised to see me, Janelle. Not that you can, anyways," Davina laughed darkly, lighting some candles around the room.

Janelle was ready to ask why Davina was here, but she saw no point. Everyone she thought she knew was now turning against her.

"Still upset that I refused to help you resurrect Kol? Please, Davina. Get over it. It's not like the guy actually loved you."

Davina glared at Janelle before grabbing a small knife that was set aside from her and stabbing it through Janelle's palm. Janelle yelped as Davina told her, "You don't know a thing about him, or what we had."

Janelle gritted her teeth, trying to block out the pain, "Think of it this way, sweetie. When Kol died, it saved you the heartbreak of having to see his true colors. Kol didn't care about anybody, but himself. I did you a favor."

Davina grabbed the knife again, pulling it out of Janelle's hand. Her wound instantly healed, but it still hurt. "Shut up!" she spat as Janelle yelled for her to stop. "Now, I'm going to ask you this one time. What have you been telling the other wolves?"

What everyone else didn't know was Janelle was still speaking with Aiden. She was the one who asked him to find her brothers and bring them here. But it wasn't like she was going to tell Davina that.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," Janelle lied, keeping a straight face.

"Really? Then, why haven't Esther and I been able to locate Aiden since the last time we sent him in to see you?"

"My answer's still the same as the first."

"Tell me where he is," Davina demanded.

"Or what?"

Davina wasn't taking a liking to Janelle's resistance, but she knew she would've been stubborn about this either way. Davina took a small bucket of water and poured it over Janelle's arms and down to her waist.

"Oh, please, please, somebody help me, the mean witch is pouring water all over me and it's really cold," Janelle sarcastically pleaded.

Davina's hands gripped around the chains that were bound to Janelle's wrists and used her powers to electrocute her. Janelle began gasping as her body thrashed around, but she still tried to fight off the constant torture Davina was enduring on her.

Davina let go of Janelle, waiting for her to start speaking, but she only scoffed, "Is that the best you got?"

Davina wasn't planning on giving up just yet. She was going to let this play out for as long as she had to. Her hands returned to Janelle's chains as she inflicted the dark haired witch with even stronger electric waves.

Janelle screamed out in pain as her back arched against the table beneath her. This went on for about a minute until Janelle told Davina to release her hold on the chains.

"Okay, I've had enough," Janelle breathed out. "Your treatment of me is shocking," she emphasized the last part with a strained laugh. "Get it? Shocking?"

"Do you have a death wish or something?" Davina inquired, stepping around to stand on Janelle's side.

"You're not strong enough to kill me," Janelle told her. "You would've done it already if you were."

Just then, there was a loud bang, followed by the sound of a struggle.

Davina glanced behind her, "What was that?"

She turned back to Janelle, who said nothing. Davina exhaled through her nose before knocking over a set of candles, along with some vials.

"If you have something to do with this, that baby won't be the only one that dies tonight." Davina stormed out of the room, locking the door with a key.

Gathering up the strong desire to get free, Janelle continued to pull at her chains, hoping to get them loose. Janelle didn't need her sight to know that the room was up in flames.

There was a ton of smoke β€” she could smell it.

The air was becoming denser and it caused a stinging sensation in Janelle's eyes. She tried blinking, hoping it would go away, but it really just made it worse.

Her head began to pound as the air got thinner. Janelle was forced to hold her breath; if she inhaled too much smoke, she would die. And that wasn't what she was planning on doing.

She had to stay awake.

Janelle's skin was burning up and sweating from the heat. The blazing heat was a constant reminder that the fire was slowly eating away at the room. Janelle's lungs couldn't take it anymore, she had to breathe.

Janelle coughed as her mind began to drift elsewhere.

"What are you doing out here?" Kai asked as he walked out onto the front porch. "It's four in the morning. You should be asleep, babe."

"Winter is only like my favorite season ever. When it started snowing, you know I just had to be out here," Janelle told him, continuing to kick the snow around beneath her feet.

"You know, when I was little, my mother would always sneak me away from the house to watch the snow fall around this time of year. My father thought it was ridiculous, but she insisted on taking me anyways."

"You miss her, don't you?" Kai asked, taking a step forward.

Janelle silently laughed to herself, fiddling with the ends of her sleeves. "There isn't a day that passes by where I don't think about her."

Kai pulled the blanket he had around him closer and joined Janelle under the falling snowflakes. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pressed a soft kiss to the nape of her neck. "Thank you."

"For what?" she asked.

"For sharing a part of your past with me," he replied. "I know your family has always been a touchy subject."

It never sat well with Janelle when her family was brought up into conversation. But when she did feel like talking about them, which was very rare, Kai was always there to listen. Whether it'd be good, or bad, he always enjoyed getting to know more about his girlfriend.

"Yeah," Janelle sighed, "I know it's not fair to be so secretive about my life, considering you've already told me a lot about yours. But it's just that, I've been through so much with my brothers, and my father, and..."

She started to choke up on her words and Kai immediately turned her around to pull her into a tight hug. "It's okay. I understand that this isn't easy for you. I'm not going to force you to tell me, Janelle."

Janelle buried her head into Kai's warm chest as she sniffled, "There are just some things that I choose not to dwell on because it brings up too many bad memories for me and-"

"Shh," Kai hushed her, soothingly running his hand up and down Janelle's back. "We can talk about it when you're ready."

Janelle nodded and wiped her cheeks. "She would've loved you, you know," she glanced up Kai, finishing her sentence by saying, "My mother. She would've wanted me to end up with someone like you β€” to be happy. To find someone that loves and appreciates me, just as much as I would them. Took me awhile, but I think I found him."

A grin tugged at Kai's lips as he leaned down to have them meet hers. The snow fell over them and coated their hair as they stood in front of Kai's house, kissing passionately. A gust a wind hit the couple and Kai shivered, pulling away from Janelle.

"God, it's freezing," Kai shivered before removing the blanket he previously had over him and placing it around Janelle's shoulders. "Here."

Janelle was about to protest, clearly not even being able to get cold, but Kai didn't know that. She felt guilty for having to let her boyfriend suffer, but she was obligated to take the kind gesture either way.

The two of them spent the next few minutes in silence, just watching the snow fall and pile up on the ground beneath them.

That was until Kai decided to do something so sudden and completely unexpected for not only Janelle but himself as well.

"Marry me."
