"you promise that you'll come tommorow?"

the small lighthearted chuckles of the setter had echoed in the room as he looked at his pouting girlfriend.

"of course i will y/n, when have i ever broken a promise," he gave her one more small peck on her lips as their infamous goodbye kiss before putting his thick black coat on.

"okay that's true," she mumbled looking back at him with a small smile now on her lips.

she watched as her boyfriend buttoned up his coat before walking towards the door blurting out those few words that made his heart pound.

"i love you keiji."

y/n had said those three words with such desire almost as if she was afraid of him leaving her.

but nonetheless the ebony haired boy couldn't help but turn around giving the girl one last smile to reassure her anxiety. "i love you too y/n."

little did akaashi keiji know those would be the last ones she was going to hear from him.

during class the next morning he had received a call from y/n's mother telling him the bad news.

all the setter could do was run out of class and down the halls his legs trembling as he looked for somewhere to escape to. anywhere.

but almost as if his legs had given up halfway he fell to the ground his shaking body leaning against the cold wall.

that's when he broke.

tears began to fall down his cheek as he brought his hands to his face his quiet sobs filling the halls.

akaashi couldn't believe it.

she was gone. the love of his life and the one he planned to live an endless life with slipped away from his fingers in blind sight.

the setter put his face in his hands in attempts to calm his breaths but had failed to do so as they only quickened by the second.

that is only till a familiar touch had grasped his shoulders which he snapped his attention to see the familiar cheery captain who now wore a frown on his face.

bokuto could only embrace akaashi is a warm hug, the ebony haired boy letting out all of his emotions not giving a care in the world that he had been there.

"hey it's alright akaashi, it's alright," his best friend had whispered rubbing his friends back soothingly in attempts to calm his quick breaths.

never in his life had he seen akaashi this broken and it truly hurt him.

all the ace wanted to take his pain away. but as that was nearly possible all he could do was be by his side as a shoulder to lean on.

now after the day he had heard the news the boy skipped school for the rest of the week as he couldn't even bring himself to get out of bed.

everything reminded him of her.

even his own bed where him and y/n had spent lots of time on cuddling and having their cute moments triggered his emotions.

akaashi's parents come into his room a few times a day asking how he was to which he would only reply with a a simple 'i'm fine'

was he really though? not the slightest bit.

the boy had known that the girl was going to leave his sooner or later but he just didn't want to face the harsh reality that it was now, and after all she had told him.

the future they would live together, getting married, having kids and spending every living moment with one another .

but of course life just wasn't in their favour.

as a week had past by y/n's funeral approached but keiji just didn't have it in him to go. he couldn't bare to see her lifeless body.

that's not the last image he wanted to have of her in his eyes.

so his parents hadn't pushed him in going only giving him a reassuring smile before leaving.

as the door faintly closed akaashi slowly rose from his bed looking into the mirror directly in front of him.

his dishevelled hair, dark eyebags, his eyes puffed from the tears he had produced, his paler than usual skin was all visible.

he felt and looked like a complete mess.

but he didn't know what to do. how to act. she was all he was thinking about.

and it had been so for the next two weeks.

keiji had been forced to go back to school his parents saying that it would help in keeping his mind to something else.

but of course that hadn't been true.

just seeing something as small as a couple holding hands had triggered his emotions.

the boy had now held his usual deadpanned look to everyone but this one was filled with sadness and despair.

almost like a shadow looming over him, covering akaashi from the harsh reality.

of course everyone around him had noticed it as well, worried at how emotionless he had become.

but behind the hard exterior he built for himself in front of everyone whenever those weren't around it crumbled.

the boy would walk home tears streaming down his face all alone. that's what he felt. alone.

not having someone to walk by his side clinging onto his arm talking about the tiring day they had was what he wanted.

but it was no longer possible for the setter.

"you don't have to come to practice if you don't want to."

"i'm sorry for your loss."

"it's alright to be sad."

"are you real okay?"

those were phrases he heard on repeat the boy only answering with a simple okay and a nod as the more it had been asked, the sicker he got of it.

he didn't enjoy the pity he had gotten from everyone. it even made him laugh at one point.

'no wonder y/n never spoke of her cancer,' akaashi thought to himself as he stared at his ceiling in thought.

she didn't want anyone feeling this sort of pity towards her.

~

"good luck on your games' today keiji we'll be cheering for you!" his mother kissed his cheek lovingly sending the boy a reassuring smile.

today was the day of nationals and as much as keiji did not want to go the words of his captain and best friend loomed in his mind.

"she would be disappointed if you don't go."

bokuto was right on all sides. y/n wouldn't want the boy to be grieving over her to the point where he would miss one of the most important days of his life.

so he decided to do this for her.

"thank you mom and dad," he gave them a nod before noticing his team entering the locker room. "i have to go get ready now but i'll see you after the match."

and with that akaashi took his leave walking into the locker room only for all eyes to be set on him.

after y/n's death all of his teammates had worried for the setter knowing how much it would affect him.

the team knew of the love the couple shared and couldn't even bare themselves to feel the emotions akaashi had been emitting.

although he barely spoke to anyone every since that day it was clear to notice how he felt just by how different he had been.

as much as they all wanted to speak to him bokuto had told them not to do so saying.

he told them to only give akaashi time to warm up to them. but truly the owl haired boy himself didn't know how long it would take.

it could honestly last weeks, months, even years before he could go back to his normal self.

but nonetheless the ace, akaashi's best friend would do everything in his power to make him feel better.

"alright boys get changed as we need to be on the court warming up in 10 minutes!" coach broke the looming silence that filled the room.

following his coaches instructions akaashi walked towards the bench placing his bag on so to get ready.

he decided to only keep silent, the voices of his teammates looming in the air as he didn't feel the urge to speak up.

as the boy picked out his jersey as if it had felt like a revelation a sudden memory loomed in his mind his blue orbs widening at so...

"soo keiji how do i look?" y/n twirled around in the white and black jersey that she was wearing.

glancing up from his phone akaashi eyes were quick to widen at the sight in front of him unable to utter a single word.

the jersey had basically consumed her body it being so big that it had went past her knees.

the girl had thought that it was a good idea to wear so as she always thought of the cheesy scenarios of a girl wearing their boyfriends jersey.

"babe?" y/n tilted her head at the setter who only found her even more adorable as he gestured her to come towards him.

cautiously she took a few steps towards him her eyebrows furrowed in confusion with what the boy had wanted.

as she now stood in front of akaashi he swiftly snaked his arms around her waist pulling her towards him to basically straddle in his lap.

the girl let out a surprised squeal stunned at his bold action her legs instantly wrapping around his waist and her hand locking behind his neck.

"you always have a way to make me feel like this huh," he mumbled a faint blush on his cheeks as he leaned his face towards hers.

y/n could only watch in shock as akaashi wore a playful smirk her own facing blooming red.

"you will always look stunning to me sweetheart," his breath trickled on her face before planting a bittersweet kiss on her lips.

"i love you," was all she could let out a huge smile on her face as she eyed the boy with adoration.

"i love you too," akaashi whispered back the smile never leaving his face.

"oi akaashi!" a voice brought the boy back to reality his eyes glancing to meet bokuto's.

"y/n's mother is here to see you."

just at the mention of her name akaashi's eyes perked up looking around to notice that all the boys had been gone and only bokuto and him were left in the room.

"you still have some time before warming up so i'll let you talk to her," he patted his kouhai's shoulder a small smile on his lips before walking towards the exit.

following his steps akaashi noticed y/n's mother waiting right beside the ace who whispered something to her before leaving the room.

now filled with silence the setter looked at his girlfriends mother who began walking towards him.

y/n's mother had never attended one of his games as she was always busy with work so forth coming to a surprise to keiji to even see her in sight.

"i just wanted to wish you luck before the game," she spoke. "but i also wanted to give you this."

she outstehcred her hands that held a familiar white letter akaashi's name imprinted on it.

"it's y/n's love letter," he mumbled his eyes lingering over the familiar wriritng.

"she told me that if she wasn't able to make till graduation to give it to you. i don't know what's written in here but my daughter was really keen on you reading this."

slowly taking the letter out of her hand he eyed it intently before glancing up to notice a smile on the ladies lips.

"you really were something special to y/n and i want to thank you for taking care of her." she took a breath before continuing. "i wish that i could've been a better mother to y/n as she needed someone to lean against on but what i hadn't noticed was that she already had that."

small tears now trickled down her face trying to wipe them away quickly. "well i should go find a spot now to watch the game but i wish you the best keiji," she placed a hand on his shoulder reassuringly before taking a step back.

akaashi could only watch y/n's mother walk out the room as he hadn't known of what to say.

that is till his eyes set upon the piece of paper still in his hands.

sitting down on the bench behind him his hands couldn't help but begin to shake. he was nervous to see what was beyond this letter.

but pushing those thoughts away he slowly ripped it open placing the envelope to the side before unfolding the paper.

dear keiji,

i'm assuming that you are either reading this after graduation but if not i'm sorry. i'm sorry that i lied to you. i promised you that i would be able to stay with your forever but life just didn't want it to be like that. i really tried, i promise you keiji but it just took over and i didn't want you to know how serious my cancer was as i didn't want to worry you more even though i knew you already had been already. so i'm sorry that i acted selfish. but anyways before i go off topic other than apologizing to you i wanted to say thank you. thank you for being by my side through everything. i know i can be a pain in the ass to deal with but you've stuck with me nonetheless. i will never forget all the times you brought a smile to my face or made me blush to the point where i felt like i was going to explode. you always know what to say or do to make my heart flutter and i love you for that. so i'm sorry and thankful keiji. i'm sorry of how much i've been bottling up my feelings but i'm thankful for everything you've done. but most of all i'm grateful that i've had someone in my life to love so deerly that it could consume everything inside of me. i'll always be there by your side no matter what the circumstances, we're each others serotonin's after all.

- love your amazing girlfriend y/n.

as akaashi read those last few words he couldn't help but allow all the emotions he had been bottling up these past few weeks escape.

many tears ran down his cheek as he stared at the letter in complete shock.

y/n had written this letter almost as if she had known that she wasn't going to be alive for him to read it only hurting him more.

but at the same time he was happy. his heart was beating at a pace that he had always experienced when around her.

"you always know how to make me feel this way huh y/n," he mumbled to himself letting out a low chuckle a smile curving onto his lips.

akaashi almost felt content at what she had written to him.

"akaashi it's time to warm up," the voice of his coach had sounded from the other side of the door to which the boy quickly got up wiping his tears away.

stuffing the letter in his bag he put his jersey on before jogging towards the door. letting out a small breath he pushed the doors open to reveal the noisy gymnasium that had been on the other side.

walking towards his team they all felt a presence approaching their eyes widening at what was beneath them.

akaashi wore a small smile on his lips his eyes gleaming with excitement.

'their friend is back,' is what they thought themselves also wearing smiles on their faces happy that akaashi was taking a step in a good direction.

"let's get this victory right?" konoha walked up to the setter slinging his arm around his shoulders as he brought him towards the others.

he only nodded in response greeting his other teammates who got up from their spots ready to warm up.

watching his teammates excited and energetic faces only made the setter more relieved as he glanced up at the stands slowly.

but what caught his eye stunned him to say the least.

there behind the entire crowd stood his beautiful girlfriend smiling at him with a big thumbs up.

'you'll do amazing keiji,' was what had been spoken in his mind as his eyes stuck to the figure that looked at him with pure love and adoration.

exactly how y/n looked every time she watched his games.

~

2 weeks later. *small nationals spoilers*

"hi y/n," akaashi spoke quietly as he set her favourite flowers in front of the tombstone.

after weeks of avoidance the boy had finally decided to visit her tombstone. he felt as if it was the closure he needed.

although the girl hadn't physically been in his sight, he felt as if she could still hear him deciding to speak to her.

"sadly we didn't win nationals which bokuto did not like but still placed second which is something," he laughed at the thought of the ace before kneeling down. "but i'm just happy that we tried our best for our last year." he truthfully admitted.

a comfortable silence set for the setter as he glanced up at the sky in thought of what he would say.

"i read your letter," keiji glanced back down. "it really sucks that you were not able to read mine but i'm hoping that saying what i want out loud here will get the message through."

he took in a deep breath watching as the a puff of cold hair loomed in the air as he huffed it out.

"it wasn't as long as yours but it had what was needed to be said," he finally began. "y/n... i'm really glad that you walked into my life 5 years ago because if that had never happened then i wouldn't be the person i am today."

"i would most likely be as closed off as i was before afraid to show any emotion towards anyone... but because of you i was able to do so. you always brought out the best in me and i'm so grateful for that."

"i'll miss so much about you. your cute yet clumsy moments, the times where you would be struggling with homework and i would be forced to teach you. the goodbye kiss that we shared every time we would separate. but i'll mostly miss the excitement you brought in my life because although it felt like a rollercoaster, it was experience i'll never forget. i love you so much y/n l/n and i'll never stop."

as akaashi had just poured his heart out he couldn't help but feel satisfied. satisfied that somewhere the girl had heard his words and was smiling back at him.

although life hadn't gone all picture perfect for the couple, the two would always be grateful for the years they spent together.

they always brought out a sense of euphoria for one another always wanting the latter to be happy.

she was his serotonin as he was hers and they wouldn't see it in any other way.
