"You know it's okay to be sad, Mingyu. It's really okay." Joshua stares at Mingyu with sad eyes and he hasn't seen sadness so blue and dark he thinks he's going to cry too. But only anger boils inside him.
"No! I can't. I'm not sad, Joshua. I'm not." Mingyu only notices how his hands trembles when Joshua holds them with a tight but assuring grip.
"But you are, you're only denying it." Joshua holds his tears and Mingyu can sense it.
"I'm not, okay? I don't have the time to be sad. I don't deserve to be sad." Mingyu can feel tears on his cheeks and he rubs at it angrily. "I don't want to be sad, Joshua. I'm not meant to cry. Why am I crying?" He shows to his lover his tears-streaked hands with desperation. "I can't cry. No. Dad will hit me. Please make it stop."
Mingyu wakes with a start from hearing his door being knocked, his head resting at the couch arm rest and a blanket over him. He reaches for his phone and sees that Wonwoo has been sending him messages throughout his nap time.
From Wonwoo: omg
From Wonwoo: of course.
From Wonwoo: I would love to come over.
From Wonwoo: I thought you would say no
From Wonwoo: Hey I'm at burger king. Is there anything you want?
From Wonwoo: Mingyu?
From Wonwoo: You must be asleep.
From Wonwoo: I'll just buy you a whopper or something.
From Wonwoo: I'm walking to the address you sent me. Excited to see you after so long
From Wonwoo: Hey I'm at the door.
From Wonwoo: I'll just knock haha
Wonwoo knocks consistently; knocks 4 steady rhythms every 6 seconds, soft but loud enough to be heard. Mingyu smiles at the fact that even in situations like these, the beautiful man at the other side of his door is still considerate and kind.
Mingyu places his phone on the coffee table and walks to the mirror placed on the wall. He fixes himself, his hair on one side and his shirt straightened, and smiles at himself to check if he has anything in between his teeth. When he thinks he is presentable enough, he walks to the small corridor that separates the front door to the living room and holds the door knob. He sighs out his last breath before he opens the door for Wonwoo.
Wonwoo looks cute with his yellow pajamas that has multiple ice cream prints and a grey shirt that says, "Sleep is for the weak for a week." He notices the small smile Wonwoo has and when he locks eyes with the man, Wonwoo shows his toothy smile and raises the plastic of Burger King in his hands.
"Special delivery." Wonwoo says with a smile that could outshine the stars.
Mingyu laughs and moves aside to let Wonwoo in. "Come in."
Wonwoo walks in his apartment and looks around the apartment with careful steps. "Sorry I didn't get to reply to your texts. I kinda dozed off on the couch."
Wonwoo places the plastic bag on top of the coffee table and sits on the couch like he was meant to be there, like he was meant to fill the gaps of his empty apartment. "I figured with the blanket on the couch. Also, it's kind of late so I expected you to be tired." Mingyu moves to the kitchen as Wonwoo turns his head to face him, Mingyu is pouring a glass of water when.
"I'm sorry for coming over so late." Wonwoo says.
"If it's bothered me, then I would have said no to your offer."
Mingyu walks over to the living room and places the glass on front of Wonwoo on the coffee table. He sits beside his guest with a distance; not too close but not too far.
"Still, Mingyu. You could be sleeping off those eyebags under your eyes."
"You're too humble, Wonwoo." Mingyu smiles and unconsciously places a hand on Wonwoo's knee. "I'm okay, really. I need the company while Seungcheol is away."
"Feeling lonely, huh? Or maybe sad?" Wonwoo says and Mingyu's breathe hitches, and Wonwoo notices because the silence is too long and Wonwoo's smile wavers. He stares at Wonwoo with eyes that even Mingyu could not understand. "Mingyu? Why the sad face?"
Mingyu abruptly stands to reach for the plastic and opens it with frustrated hands. "It's nothing." But Mingyu doesn't believe it is because he says it with the desperate need of diminishing the panic in his throat and the fear of Wonwoo realizing the flaw in his eyes.
"Are you sure, Mingyu? You look so worked up."
Mingyu turns to Wonwoo with anger. "I'm not, okay?! I told you it's nothing!" He screams, and he regrets even saying a word because Wonwoo deflates into sadness.
"I'm sorry. If you want me to go, I can-" Wonwoo is about to stand when Mingyu reaches for his hand.
"No." Mingyu closes his eyes to wish away the tears in his eyes. "I'm sorry. I'm just thinking too much and so many stories in my life that you still don't know is coming back to me and I just feel on edge."
Wonwoo sits back down and slowly intertwines his hands with Mingyu's. "It's okay, I understand." Wonwoo circles his thumb on the back of Mingyu's hand and he can feel his heart calm down at the sight of Wonwoo's hand interlocking with his. "How about we binge watch Friends and eat our hearts out so that we could forget about those thoughts for a while? Is that alright?"
Mingyu smiles at him and Wonwoo smiles back. "Of course."
"And maybe tell me your stories in the future?" Wonwoo says it like it was a question and Mingyu could feel his hesitation.
"Yeah, sure. Maybe, you can write about it someday."
Wonwoo smiles at him with softness only lovers share and Mingyu thanks his heart is reaching the edges of the universe. "Someday, Mingyu."
They finished a season of Friends when Seungcheol comes home to them snuggling on the couch, the remnants of their feast left on the table.
"Oh. I didn't know you would be home so early." Mingyu says when he spots Seungcheol standing by the hallway. Wonwoo stands when Seungcheol approaches them, and they shake hands.
"You are?" Seungcheol asks.
"Wonwoo. Jeon Wonwoo. I go to the same university as you and Mingyu."
"Oh! You must be an undergrad. Major?" Seungcheol goes to the kitchen refrigerator to grab a can of beer and Mingyu just watches their conversation unfold.
"Literature. You?"
"Computer science. Wonwoo, you look really familiar." Seungcheol stands opposite of Wonwoo and Mingyu who were now sitting on the couch. "It's like I've seen you somewhere." Seungcheol squints while taking a sip from the can.
"You probably have seen me sing." Mingyu looks at Wonwoo in surprise and Wonwoo gives an embarrassing smile when their eyes meet. "Maybe from the winter singing competition."
Seungcheol snaps his fingers. "Right! You're the one who sang a Sam Smith song and cried right?"'
"Yeah. That was me!" Wonwoo said excitedly.
Seungcheol looks at Mingyu and sips from the can again before speaking up. "I told you to come with us, but you refused to stay with Sunday Morning."
Mingyu grabs a ball of used tissues to throw at Seungcheol but the elder quickly avoided it. "Stop being an ass, Cheol."
Mingyu hears Wonwoo laugh and Seungcheol laughs with him. "Yeah whatever loser." Seungcheol raises his can slightly while giving Wonwoo a smile. "Nice meeting you, Wonwoo. If you plan on sleeping here, I'm warning you now that Mingyu is a snorer."
Wonwoo laughs again and Mingyu can't help but look at how his eyes become like comets. "I'll be careful, Hyung. Thank you."
Seungcheol turns to his room and closes the door behind him with a lock. "Sorry about Seungcheol. He is annoying, I know."
"I might as well get used to it, honestly."
"Does this mean this won't be the last time you'll be here?" When Wonwoo turns to him with a soft smile, Mingyu heart melts.
"I still have a story to write and you have a story to tell me. I plan on knowing every star you hold in your pockets."
Mingyu stands and grabs for their trash on the coffee table and rushes to the kitchen to dispose of it. When Mingyu comes back, Wonwoo is watching him with a soft smile again and Mingyu can't count how many times he smiled like that to him anymore. "You smile all the time."
"Is it bad?"
"No. I find it cute."
If Mingyu spots the brush of pink on Wonwoo's cheeks, he doesn't mention it in hopes of concealing his own heartbeat. Mingyu offers his hand for Wonwoo and the latter looks at him in confusion.
"You want to start on knowing my story, Wonwoo?" Mingyu feels his heart race when he feels Wonwoo's soft hands in his. Mingyu pulls Wonwoo off the couch and brings him to his room.
He opens the door and Mingyu doesn't need to switch the lights on because the light of the moon is bright enough to light the whole room.
"I suppose this is your room?" Wonwoo stares at the mini sculpture of the solar system that was taking up most of the space of the table beside the door. Wonwoo gingerly taps on a switch placed on the corner of the sculpture and the sun in the center lights up. "Oh, wow."
Mingyu stands beside him as he sees Wonwoo's eyes shine with admiration. "It was my last science project before graduating high school."
He just watches Wonwoo unravel most of his life laid scattered on his room. Mingyu considers a person's bedroom their life story; a diary of some sorts. It's where thoughts are stored, and sentiments are the most intimate. And having Wonwoo's eyes wander through the walls of pictures, posters, and dents makes Mingyu think how much he trusts Wonwoo. The first person who he trusted with his room was Seungcheol and he never wanted anyone else inside it not until Joshua.
Joshua was different; he was one who laid his own heart and placed it on his sleeve for everyone to see. Mingyu was never a fan of exposure β it makes a person seem vulnerable β but when saw Joshua's heart shine like the sun he thinks that he can bring his own heart out to give to him the next day.
But for Wonwoo, is was a whole different trust. Maybe it's because he saw a whole different universe inside his heart. Joshua may have the sun in his, but Wonwoo had the cosmos stored inside him and Mingyu's heart craves to discover every dust, star, and planet that makes Wonwoo.
Wonwoo walks to his book shelf that covers half of the wall and lines his fingers on the spine of a book. He picks it out from the shelf and reads the title. "Encyclopedia of The Cosmos?" He notices the various sticky notes peeking out of the sides and opens the book from there. "Venus-"Wonwoo says, and Mingyu interrupts.
"The 2nd planet from the sun and was named after the roman goddess of beauty and love. One of my favorite planets."
Mingyu sees Wonwoo smile at the picture of the planet. Wonwoo then turns to Mingyu. "How so?"
Mingyu hums. "You can still see it despite the city lights masking the others."
"It stands out?"
"Something like that."
Wonwoo huffs a laugh. "Sounds romantic." Wonwoo says.
"Talking about the universe is romantic."
Mingyu sits at the foot of his bed and watches Wonwoo look up the window on the roof. "Beautiful view you have here." Mingyu lays down but continues to watch Wonwoo look out the usual view he looks at. "It must cost a fortune."
"Not really." Mingyu looks out the window. "The owner of the apartment gave Seungcheol and I a discount because he owed my dad. I don't know what he owed him but it must be a lot for giving it with a 40% discount"
"Lucky." Mingyu felt Wonwoo tap his knee and he averts his eyes to his companion. "May I?" Wonwoo looks at the empty sheets beside Mingyu.
"Of course." Mingyu gives him space so that the bed can fit them both. Mingyu could feel Wonwoo's warmth beside him and after a long time of anxiety, Mingyu feels safe without being in the arms of somebody else; that the fact that he feels safe in the mere warmth of a man who holds the universe can push him to be better.
"Mingyu." He hears Wonwoo sigh beside him. Mingyu hums in acknowledgement. "Why astronomy?"
"Because why not?" Mingyu laughs and Wonwoo groans beside him.
"I'm serious here." Mingyu turns his head to the side to look at Wonwoo and he could feel Wonwoo's presence so close to him. The latter then looks up again at the window and Mingyu sees the light of the moon highlight Wonwoo's skin that normal light cannot show. "Why astronomy? Why not medicine? Or law?"
Mingyu looks up the window and thinks about it for a moment. There was silence in the room but the extremes of the intimacy they have pulsates at their ears β it's deafening but music to their ears.
"Have you ever thought that you know everything you need to know, Wonwoo?"
Wonwoo hums softly. "I believe that knowledge is infinite, and one can't know everything."
"And yet the universe exists, and it knows everything."
Mingyu hears Wonwoo rustle beside him and he thinks he faced his head towards Mingyu. "What do you mean?"
"It knows everything because the universe is everything."
Wonwoo laughs and he could feel his breathe on his ear. "I think philosophy fits best for you."
Mingyu laughs with Wonwoo. "If you think about it, the great philosophers were the first astronomers and at some point, they craved to know everything."
"Do you want to be like them, then? Know everything, I mean."
"That's what great about being under astronomy; we strive to discover what's beyond, whether it's everywhere and nowhere at once. I don't need to know everything, I just want to reach it."
"You're such a romantic."
"Being a romantic comes with the job."
They stay silent, letting the quiet of the room take over them and the moon shine over them. Mingyu is so relaxed that he hasn't noticed his eyes flutter shut and let himself fall asleep. But before his senses become numb, he hears Wonwoo leave his bed and say something in a faint voice. But Mingyu hears it, loud and clear.
"My venus, sleep tight."
