My back is pressed against a wall of lockers, each containing a lifeless body. Tony stands next to me with his back to the culprits as Bernie searches him.
"I-I didn't find nothing." She whimpers lightly.
"The way you're shaking, you couldn't find a shotgun." His gun sits firmly in his right hand and points directly at me.
He approaches Tony's still figure, suddenly digging the weapon into his side before proceeding to search the agent himself.
"Huh." He stands back up in defeat. "Either of you call Security?"
"We don't work here, you bastard." I glimpse at Tony through the corner of my eye as my heart aches from seeing him in pain.
"What about your, uh, doctor friends?" He questions.
"They think we've already left." Tony responds quietly.
"What a pity it would be. . ." A bullet clicks into place. "No need for transportation if the bodies are already in the morgue."
I stand my ground. "If you leave now. . .we can forget this ever happened."
"Would you do that?"
"In a heartbeat."
Without a second thought, Nick hits the magazine of his gun between Tony's shoulder blades, and he tumbles down onto his back.
"Tony!"
"Will you forget now?" The cool metal of the barrell touches my temple. "That's what I thought."
Tony clutches the top of my forearm, eyes closing as he passes out.
"Surgery first, Miss."
"I don't think so."
"You don't think so?"
"You let me help him first, then I'll do whatever you say."
Just when I think he'll agree to my condition, his left hand wraps around my throat and slowly cuts off my breath.
He grimaces. "You're a slow learner."
"I always. . .have been. . ." My throat tightens with each passing second. "If you let me help him. . .I'll help you."
His face inches closer.
"If you don't agree. . .feel free to shoot me."
"Don't hurt her, Nick." A shaking Bernie calls out.
Knocking some sense into himself, Nick releases me with a push to the ground. I scramble towards him, my hands clutching his face.
"Tony? Tony, wake up." I force his eyes open. "Don't you dare pass out on me again."
Once I have him sitting up against the wall, I use my very limited medical knowledge β mostly from watching Grey's Anatomy β to assess him.
"I don't think you have a concussion." My fingers drum against my thigh. "But I can't be sure since I'm not a doctor."
"I've been hit harder." He flashes a knowing grin.
"Oh, I'm sure you have." My eyes squint teasingly.
The tap from a handheld gun brings me back to reality, however. "Enough playing. You need to keep your end of the deal."
"Do it. I don't want you to get hurt." He urges me softly. "Not when I just got you back."
"Well, we are in a hospital." I shrug my shoulders.
"Let's go!"
I walk over to the table with the body as Nick shines a light from overhead. He sets an open scalpel on the skin of his abdomen.
"Half K of pure horse in here."
"Like I said. . .I'm not a surgeon, and I'm not a doctor."
I find a mask in one of the medical supply cabinets. Tying both ends of it, I slip one end over my head and secure the other around my neck.
"I'm not asking you to save a life." He shakes his head. "Well, maybe I am."
"Come on, come on, come on!" Bernie jumps up and down, the pitiful tears still streaming down her cheeks.
The latex gloves snap around my wrists when I slip them on.
"Quit stalling. He doesn't have A.I.D.S.."
"That's not the reason I'm wearing the mask."
"What's it for then? Why the mask?"
I keep my eyes on Nick, not even looking away for a split second. "Tell Bernie to turn around first. Then I'll answer."
"Do it, Bernie."
"The mask protects me from the spread of disease through any airborne particles that will be released when I cut him open."
With his arm still held up, he staggers towards the cabinet and takes out another mask, this time for himself. He holds it up against his mouth before nodding.
"No more stalling."
From behind the mask, I bite down on my bottom lip and make the first incision. I bury a gloved hand under the skin and search for a bag.
"Your friend died bringing you this." I pull the bloody package out of his body. "You really want it, don't you?"
"What the hell do you think?"
So I slice open the bag, letting the white powder spill all over the body.
"Bitch!"
And while he's distracted, I shove the scalpel into his shoulder. Instinctively, he drops the gun, and Tony is quick to grab it.
Nick removes the scalpel from his body and aims to kill me.
But Tony fires a warning shot.
"Next one's in your ear."
He rises onto his feet, and I slowly step backwards.
"Drop it."
The medical device falls to the floor with a clatter as he falls down to the ground. Tony kicks aside the scalpel, away from his reach.
"You okay?"
"I don't really know."
While all else silent, the sound of sniffling fills the room. The three of us look towards the body and see. . .Bernie snorting the bloody heroin from her brother's body.
"Oh, God."
From the sounds of the gunshot, security and both siblings come running down. They arrest Bernie and Nick before getting me and Tony checked out.
"I'm gonna need years of therapy after this." My arm curls around Jaiden's as we walk out of the hospital. "And I mean years."
Jeanne quickens her pace to strut alongside us. "You two should be under observation for at least 24 hours."
"Whatever the doctor orders." Tony rubs the back of his head.
Out of nowhere, the long stretch of a limo rounds the corner before stopping directly in front of us.
"What's this?"
"Our secret."
The driver of the vehicle holds open the door as Jeanne, Jaiden, Tony, and I enter the vehicle.
"Bonjour, Papa."
The two greet the only other person sitting inside.
"So, this must be Anthony DiNardo. . .and Evaline Giovanni."
The man kisses both of our cheeks as well, as a calm sign of welcome.
"Welcome to the family, both of you."
And the man is none other than. . .La Grenouille.
"Our father knows everything about you two." Jaiden slips a hand over my thigh, rubbing it gently.
"Only what my children tell me." His lips form a smile.
"And we tell him everything." Jeanne crosses one leg over the other.
Tony laughs nervously, joined by Jeanne. Jaiden nods his head ever so slightly, leaving me to smile and nod.
He claps his hands together. "That's great." Tony looks around at the five of us. "So. . .here we all are. On our way to, um, where exactly are we headed?"
"I don't know." La Grenouille looks to his daughter. "Breakfast? A chance for us to get to know one another." He turns to me. "I'm sure you have a lot of questions. I know I do."
"My apartment first, Papa." Jeanne states. "You wouldn't believe the night Eva and Tony have had."
Seeing as Tony's sitting behind me at the end, I notice his hand slip into his pocket and discretely pull out his cellphone.
"I was terrified with that scalpel in my hand." A nervous chuckle leaves my lips. "I don't know how doctors and surgeons do it."
"Well, when they do it, they're saving a life."
"That's also true, Mr. Benoit."
He shakes his head. "Please, RenΓ©."
Jeanne and Jaiden proceed to explain the story of the patient from the beginning while I add in parts from the morgue. This gives Tony time to dial Jenny's number.
Unfortunately, we head back to the hospital since Jeanne and Jaiden forgot to sign the death certificate, leaving me and Tony with the international arms dealer.
"Oh, shoot." I snap my fingers. "Mr. Ben β RenΓ©, I need to move my car from the hospital "
"So do I." Tony adds.
"They'll tow you for sure." Jeanne clicks her tongue against her teeth. "They are murder around here."
RenΓ© sips his coffee. "We wouldn't want that." He nods towards us. "Stay close. Wouldn't want to lose either of you."
"Of course not. No chance of that."
I had parked my car directly behind Tony the night before, seeing as we both arrived around the same time.
Just before I can close the door, La Grenouille calls out.
"Tony! Eva!" The elderly man comes running across the street to stand in the gap between the two vehicles. "There's no need to take your car. Henri and Jacques will drive it. You come with me, Jeanne, and Jaiden." He offers.
The two of us try to come up with excuses to leave in our own cars.
"I will have to insist. . .Agent DiNozzo. And you, Agent Giudice."
