The first time he met her, he found her annoying. And hell, yes she was.

"Oh hey! Are you the new divine visionary?"

That grin on her face, he just wanted to wipe it off.

"Rayne Ames, right?" She asked, catching up to him. "Nice to meet you. I'm (name) (last name), the crimson cane." She introduced herself.

Why wouldn't she leave? He just wanted to go to Mr. Wahlberg's office for God's sake. Please leave him alone.

She even followed him into the office. What the hell did she want-

Wait. Don't say that...

"Rayne, this is the crimson cane, (name) (last name). You will be paired with her in this mission."

He wanted to go home.

Actually, being assigned to a mission with her wasn't that bad. They finished it quite quickly. She did almost everything that he didn't even get to use his partisan to defeat the enemy.

The first mission was quite acceptable. So did the second mission. The third mission, however...

She found out about his obsession with bunnies.

All because of his carelessness to drop the keychain. She thought that it was one of the civilians' and like hell he would let her take his bunny.

"It's..." he found himself pausing, hesitating. Being assigned to missions with the crimson cane was enough for him to know how she'd react. But he was more willing to be laughed at by her than lost the precious item. "...mine."

Oh God, who knew how long she laughed that night.

Much to his dismay, she would tease him about it whenever they crossed paths. But...

"Hey, Rayne, wait up!" He almost groaned at the awfully familiar voice. He fastened up his pace, earning an offended gasp from the crimson cane. "How mean!" She whined as she reached him.

When he finally looked down at her, she sent him a teasing grin. "Bunny lover- hey! Don't go yet!" He swore, all he wanted was to get out of her sight so she wouldn't tease him again.

Well, not until she took out a keychain that caught his eyes.

"Here," she handed the small item to him, which he accepted without hesitation, and that made her laugh. "Sorry I teased you. Being a fan of bunnies is cute, you know? So here's a gift for you," she smiled.

On their fifth mission, Rayne found out that she could get mad too. The enemy called her shortie, and damn, she was furious.

"You fucking son of a bitch-"

She cast every type of curse at the poor man while she kept stomping on him. Rayne had to stop her before she killed that man.

Well, he couldn't deny that he's amused by that.

It was raining that day. When he came to the cemetery to visit his parents. He told them that he was doing fine with Finn, so they wouldn't need to worry.

He was about to leave when a familiar pale figure caught his eyes. Slowly, he approached the hooded girl. He stopped behind her, his umbrella was reached out to protect her from the rain. Only then she noticed him.

"Rayne," she smiled softly, a smile that he rarely got. Her voice was quite hoarse, but he didn't know why. "Visiting someone?"

He nodded his head. "You'll get sick if you stay in the rain like this." He muttered softly, his voice mixed with the noises of the rain.

A chuckle escaped her lips as she looked back at the grave in front of her. "It's fine," she whispered. "The rain comforts me."

Rayne hummed as he read the name engraved on the gravestone.

'Fabian (last name)...'

He wanted to ask. He wanted to know if she was okay.

But before he could do anything, (name) stood up. "Thank you, Rayne. You can go now," she smiled.

She started to walk away when he reached his hand out to stop her, but she was out of reach. He bit his lips, and before he could think any further, the words in his throat escaped his lips.

"There's a festival tonight," (name) halted her step to look back at him. "Do you want to come with me?" The crimson cane stared at him for a while before giggling softly. "If you want, I don't mind." She replied.

She looked pretty in that white dress.

The hem reached just under her knees, but she wore a black tights that covered her legs. Though he was wondering why she would wear a sleeveless dress on a cold night, she looked beautiful.

"Look, Rayne." She stopped in front of a stall. Pointing her index finger at a small rabbit bracelet, she smiled at him. "This looks cute, right?"

He nodded his head, though, his eyes were on her. "Yes," you look cute.

(Name) grinned as she then called the shopkeeper. "I'd like this one, please." The man nodded his head and packed the bracelet for her.

She took the accessory and thanked the shopkeeper before approaching the sword cane. She took his hand, her delicate touch sent him above.

She smiled before releasing his hand, and he couldn't help but miss the warmth. Only then he noticed the bracelet on his wrist.

He frowned, "You bought this for me?" She nodded her head innocently, making him sigh. He went back into the store, and returned with the same bracelet, but with small cat decorations and gave it to her.

(Name) blinked her eyes blankly. "...how'd you know I like cats?"

"How wouldn't I know when you would stop and pat every cat that crossed our paths in every mission?"

"Fair enough," she laughed.

He noticed the steam that escaped her lips when she laughed. The night was cold, it was after the rain after all.

He took off his coat and put it around her shoulders gently, the thick cloth protecting her from the coldness of the night. (Name) raised an eyebrow teasingly, "Being a gentleman now, aren't we?"

A tick mark appeared on his head before he shoved her away using his elbow, earning another laugh from her.

Falling in love with his senior was not a good thing. Especially when he found out that she was in love too.

On their eight mission, they had another company. The mission was quite tough and needed more people, so Wahlberg assigned Orter to assist them.

Only then he knew she was in love with the desert cane.

The difference in her tone was not noticeable, but Rayne noticed it. She was happier, the soft smile on her lips that appeared whenever she talked with Orter only made it more obvious.

He didn't mind. Their age gaps are quite far, after all.

Seeing her happy made him happy. So he doesn't mind if she loves someone else.

As long as that smile on her face doesn't disappear.

When Ryoh suddenly announces an urgent meeting, Rayne is confused. Shouldn't they be training for the incoming war against Innocent Zero?

He pushes the door open. When darkness greets him, he's even more confused.

Is he too early? But Ryoh said the meeting is at 3pm-

The light is switched on, and a familiar cheer is heard.

"Happy birthday!!"

Everyone was there. The divine visionaries, Max, Wahlberg, Mash and his group, Finn.

He receives many presents. He gets cream puffs with rabbit ears from Mash, rabbit earrings from Lance, plushie from Lemon, and more. Everything has bunny decorations on them.

"Happy birthday, Rayne," (name) smiles softly as she hands him her gift. He takes it and she urges him to open it.

In the box, a frame is placed perfectly under a bunny crochet. It has an 'R' on its body.

His attention is brought to the frame. Carefully lifting it, his eyes widen at the familiar picture.

She wears the familiar white dress with his coat on her, her right hand makes a peace sign as her left arm wraps around his. He's not smiling in the picture, but he looks relaxed.

"It's when we come to the festival together," she mutters softly as he hums. "I remember," his eyes soften at the precious moment that is captured into a sacred photo.

He then raises his head to look at her. "Thank you, (name)," the gentle tone shocks almost everyone, even himself.

The crimson cane regains her composure as she smiles widely, her eyes adore with pride for his development. "You're welcome," She reaches out her hand to ruffle his hair gently.

Her touch makes his heart flutter as he closes his eyes, appreciating the affection he receives from her, who acts like an older sister to him.

"Rayne..." a familiar hesitant voice reaches his ears as he opens his eyes to see identical honey eyes as him. Finn approaches him nervously as his gaze is glued on the ground, in his hands is a birthday gift wrapped in a yellow wrapper and black ribbon.

(Name) steps out of the way as the sword cane looks at the younger Ames silently, his gaze makes Finn even more nervous. "H-Happy birthday..." the latter stutters as he hands him the present.

Rayne accepts it without words, and that makes Finn look down in sorrow. The sword cane opens the present silently, but when he sees another frame, his eyes widen.

He takes the frame and looks at the picture with wide eyes, how-...

"How'd you get this?" He asks, a somewhat longing look plasters on his face.

Finn lowers his gaze as he plays with his hands nervously. "I... I asked our relatives if they have-"

The box is dropped onto the floor as Rayne grabs Finn's shoulders, the frame still in his hand. "Did they make you do anything for it?" He asks urgently, his eyes flash worry.

Finn immediately shakes his head. "N-No! Lance was with me and his family is quite well known, so they didn't have the guts to do so." He explains curtly.

Rayne lets out a sigh of relief before releasing his grip on the younger Ames. Then, he immediately frowns.

"You didn't have to do this, Finn. This-"

"I don't want to hear that today," Finn hesitantly cuts him off. "Today is your birthday. You should enjoy it, Rayne." Despite the tremors in his voice, he manages to say it firmly.

The sword cane frowns at the audacity, but he just sighs and shakes his head. He's gonna let it slide just this once.

Yes, he should enjoy today.

He puts the frame back into the yellow box. Looking at the picture of him, Finn and their parents for one last time before going to cut the cake, he feels the corner of his lips raise slightly.

"Rayne, time to cut the cake!" Ryoh calls out to him as he closes the box and places it carefully on the table.

"Coming,"

Extra

Currently, he is standing at the corner of the meeting room, watching the others play, laugh and enjoy his birthday party. He won't admit that he enjoys it too, though.

"Rayne," a familiar brunette approaches him. Exchanging nods of greetings, Orter settles up beside him, leaning against the wall.

"Did you have fun?" The desert cane starts the conversation as Rayne hums. "Maybe."

An awkward silence fills the air around the two divine visionaries, but none of them mind it and don't bother to break the silence.

Finally, Orter straightens up himself. "Happy birthday," he takes out a small bunny brooch from his pocket. "They said you're a fan of rabbits, so I think I'd buy you something for your birthday."

Rayne takes the brooch before nodding his head, "Thanks, Orter." The desert cane replies with a soft hum before excusing himself.

However, before he can walk further, Rayne stops him. "Take care of her," he mutters before taking his own way to the crowd. Orter looks at him silently, his eyes follow his shadow.

"...take care of who?"
