Previously...
"Valerie?" The two called out in sync, approaching behind her.
Valerie's eyes darted up, a quick gasp falling from her lips as her aqua eyes widened from shock. "I recognise those voices..." She whispered to herself so that no one else could hear her.
She spun around, meeting the two with glassy eyes.
"Guys?"
-
The wrench that Valerie was holding dropped out of her hands, hitting the ground with a loud clanking sound.
"Holy shit." She muttered timidly, eyes wide as she got out of her chair, rushing forward and practically tackling Marcy in a bone crushing hug. She pulled away for a second, the noirette's arms still tightly around her as she brought her hands up and stroked Marcy's face. And with that, a few tears spilled. "You're real, I'm not dreaming!" She giggled.
A light blush still covered Marcy's cheeks as Valerie rushed to hug Anne, but seemed to not stay in the hug as long. "It's so good to see you both!" Valerie added onto her previous sentence, pulling away from the hug and smiling.
"Great to see you too, Val," Marcy said, placing a hand on her shoulder from behind, the two making eye contact for a few seconds and both's gazes visibly relaxing at the look of the other.
Valerie then looked away, straightened up and crouched down to meet the frog family's height.
She then gasped. "Let me guess, adoptive frog family?" She asked, pointing to Anne. "I'm guessing it's yours given that she's Newtopia's ranger."
"Right on girl! Dang, I still don't know how you seem to know everything!" Anne chuckled, looking up to the slightly taller girl with a smirk.
"Keen eye to detail," she says closing one eye and using her index finger to point to the open one. "Got it from Volleyball, believe it or not. Turns out Volleyball skills can be used for pretty much everything!"
"I understand that way too much, I literally use my tennis racket as a weapon." Anne said, narrowing her eyes and using her hands to exaggerate her words further.
Valerie stiffled her laughs and in a quiet tone said "You what-?"
Suddenly, she felt a hand move through her hair, and she turned to catch Marcy as the culprit.
"Did you dye your hair, Val? I love the golden streaks, it suits the colour scheme." The noirette said, gesturing to her armour.
Valerie seemed confused for a moment before her face lit up. "Oh, uh, yeah, I dyed it!" She said, seeming almost a little... nervous? But that fact went right over Anne and Marcy's heads, much to Valerie's relief.
Sprig then coughed from behind the three, smiling nervously, Valerie being the first to turn to him and smiling as well.
"Oh, right!" Anne said, before pointing to the frogs and looking at Valerie. "Val, meet the Plantars. Sprig," she pointed to said pink frog, who waved to her. "Polly," the pink pollywag seemed nonchalant and stared at the ground. "And lastly, Hop-Pop."
The orange frog said a quick "Hi!" Before Sprig jumped across and held out his hand. "Nice to meet you! You better not be like Sasha." He said, his eyes becoming serious and shadowed as he narrowed them.
Valerie slowly stuck her hand out and shook his hand, returning with a scary glare of her own, only with a smirk. She chuckled. "I would never."
Then her face returned to normal as she took her hand off of him. "Did they have a fight? Anne?" She turned to the Thai-American girl, who stammered as she tried to get a proper response out.
"They did from what she told me," Marcy said, looking up from her journal briefly and pointing to her with her pen, before going back to scribbling whatever she was doing in there.
Valerie gasped and looked to Anne once again, her eyes shining. "You destroyed toad tower, didn't you? Man that was one hell of an explosion! I was onto that for ages I tell ya! Proud of you." Valerie lightly punched her arm.
"Well the explosions weren't technically my idea, but I did do that sword fighting myself." She responded with pride in her tone. "So thank you."
Valerie nodded in response. "So what brings you guys here? Actually, better question, is it something smart that Marcy has to explain or do all of you know what's going on?"
Everyone immediately pointed to Marcy, who had her tongue stuck out in concentration as she wrote words in her journal.
"Marc?" Valerie called out, trying to get the noirette's attention up from the book. "Mar-Mar?" She called again, with no response.
Finally, she sighed and pointed to the distance. "Oh my frog! Is that a giant monarch butterfly with assymetrical green spots all over it? How is that even possible?!"
"Ooo where?" Marcy said, eyes shining as she looked up from her book, looking for what Valerie described. Then, said brunette grabbed her chin, forcing them to lock eyes. "You paying attention now?" She asked, Marcy's face turning redder than the reddest tomato.
"Mhm..." She muttered, Valerie smiling and letting her hand fall to her side once again.
"Good, now, what brings you into Techadia?" She asks, ignoring the knowing looks from Sprig and Anne, as well as the confused ones from Polly and Hop-Pop.
Marcy shook off the trance and rubbed her head. "Oh, right! Well me, Anne and the Plantars here went to go charge-"
"-the stones for the music box?" Valerie finished, whipping out exactly what she'd just said. She smiled as the music box with one green coloured gem balanced in her hand.
Sprig then jumped up onto Anne's shoulder, ruffling through her bag as he then looked to the brunette with shock when he didn't find it there.
"How did you-"
"I have my ways," she winked, eyes flashing gold for a split second before returning to their normal aqua colour. No one seemed to notice that little flash of colour, though.
Marcy shrugged like this was normal and then continued her sentence. "Yeah, and so I hooked an artificial power source to Joe Sparrow, which is, y'know, a giant sparrow, and then he started to be weighed down by it so we had to land, and I don't know what I did wrong."
Valerie, who now had her back turned, looked back with narrowed eyes that seemed to glow in the dark. "Were there zapapede antennae?" She asked.
"...yeah?"
"How many?"
"Five."
Valerie looked back with an expression that seemed crossed with surprise and confusion. "FIVE? ARE YOU MAD?"
She then took a deep breath, counting to ten in a whisper as she tried to calm herself down. "Five will electrocute anything that it tries to power, Marc."
Marcy's mouth shifted to an 'oh'.
"Where'd you guys leave from?" The brunette asked suddenly, looking to the others.
"Wartwood," Hop-Pop replied, putting a finger up.
"Oh, the farmer town!" Valerie said with a smile. "Seems pretty slow there. Especially since their motto is quite literally 'slow to accept and even slower to respect'."
"I know that first hand," Anne said, putting up her hand, Sprig patting her shoulder to comfort her.
"Ouch." Valerie said, thinning her lips before making a popping sound with them as she turned back to the noirette. "Maybe just let the poor bird sleep, he should be able to make the trip back in the morning."
"Where will we stay?" The pollywag on the ground asked, speaking into the conversation for the first time.
Valerie turned to her and smiled. "Well I've got three rooms in the back if you count mine, so a few of you would have to share and one of you would have to share with me."
"Me and Anne can share!" Sprig said, putting an arm around Anne's shoulders as the human girl returned the gesture.
"Yeah, Spranne against the world!" Anne added with a smile.
"I want my own room!" Polly shouted very suddenly, putting her little flipper up as she did.
"No, Polly, the last time you had your own room we almost got eaten by cannibals!" Hop-Pop pointed out, throwing his arms up in the air to exaggerate his point.
"HEY!" Polly shouted back at him, using her flipper to point to him. "That was your mistake, not mine, I was doing just fine with being on my own!"
"You almost got eaten by what now?" Marcy asked, her eyes wide as she seemed deeply disturbed by the new information.
"Ohhh," Valerie clicked her fingers and rubbed her temple. "It was that...uh... I can't remember the name but whatever- that little motel in the countryside? Yeah they tried to eat me too," her face then darkened as she smirked. "But they won't be bothering anyone ever again."
"Wait what do you mean by tha-"
Valerie clapped a hand over Anne's mouth as she ushered the others down a dark hallway. "Come on, you guys can decide on the sleeping arrangements after you see the rooms."
-
After a lot of shouting and just general arguing, decisions were finally made on the room arrangements. Sprig and Anne would share a room and Polly would be sleeping in a room with Hop-Pop but sleeping a good distance away from him.
"You alright to share a room with me, Marce?" Valerie asked as she walked through the halls with the others settled in their rooms, the noirette to her left as she led her into her bedroom. "We'd have to share a bed."
Marcy blushed momentarily but it faded quite quickly. "Pfft, like we haven't done that before," she said, trying to brush it off even though she was fucking panicking on the inside.
Valerie raised an eyebrow, before shrugging. "True," then her eyes snapped open and she looked to to Marcy with mischief. "Remember that one time where we had the sleepover at Anne's house and me, you and Anne shared the king mattress and Sasha was on the couch and Anne tried to punch Sasha in her sleep and ended up falling off the mattress-"
"HAHA YEAH AND THE MATTRESS STARTED DEFLATING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT!" Marcy added with giggles, Valerie laughing along with her.
(Totally not something that happened at a sleepover with my irl friends but moving on-)
"I still don't know how that happened-" The brunette said, lips still upturned as she smiled like an idiot.
"How about we get changed now?" Marcy proposed as a way to change the subject. "Do you mind if I change first?"
"Why can't I watch you?" Valerie asked with a teasing smirk, obviously just engaging in playful banter with the brown-eyed girl.
Marcy reached into her cape and pulled out her journal, lightly hitting the brunette with the book, a blush prominent on her olive-skinned cheeks. "Get out of here, Williams." She muttered.
"Alright, alright, you tomato," The older girl teased as she made her way out of the room.
-
The two girls lay side by side, the differences very imminent with the two's pyjamas. While Marcy's were more light and flowy, Valerie's had a black a red colour scheme and were made from satin, with a button up shirt and shorts.
Marcy was having trouble falling asleep, tossing around and shivering a bit because of the cold. Although she didn't want to wake Valerie, she slowly creeped closer and tugged at her shirt.
"Val?" She asked in a quiet voice.
Slowly, the half asleep girl turned to face her and opened her eyes, rubbing away the sleep. "Hm? Can't sleep?" She asked, almost as if she knew what was going on.
Marcy nodded shyly. Without a word, Valerie scooped the shorter girl into her arms, wrapping her arms around her torso and lightly scratching her back to help her fall asleep.
Marcy loved how she knew exactly how to make her relax. She immediately melted into the familiar warm embrace, snuggling her face into Valerie's shoulder in an attempt to hide her blush as the faint smell of
She felt so loved while she was like this, like she knew Valerie could protect her. And she would do the same.
"Goodnight Mar-Mar..." She whispered gently, her eyes closing again.
"Goodnight." The noirette said in return, finally managing to drift off into sleep with Valerie's arms wrapped around her.
