BROOKLYN GONZΓLEZ SAT IN THE ROUND COUCH with her head in her hands. Sure, she'd had many migraines in the past, but this one felt worse than ever. She massaged her head as the pipe signaled down and a man with dark brown hair came stomping in. Ray.
Shoot.
The pack of lightbulbs he told her to get suddenly came into her mind and she shot up, pretending to do something actually productive. The first thing that came into her mind was 'inspecting' the couch.
Ray stopped and glared at her, "What in gravy dogs are you doing?" he asked, clearly annoyed and just done with everything. "Having a staring contest with the couch?"
"Hm? Oh, hey Ray!" Brooklyn plastered on a smile and waved, "Didn't even notice you come in! You know, this couch is very-"
Ray didn't let her finish. "Brooklyn, where are the lightbulbs?! I told you to get them hours ago!" he complained, sounding like a winning child. "Don't tell me you were just sitting around again."
"I may have been doing just that," She admitted. Ray looked as if he was about to have it with her, so she quickly explained herself. "I was having an awful migraine! I could barely focus on breathing! And I need that to survive!"
Ray raised an eyebrow and tilted his head in understatement. "True, you do need that." he muttered, "Just- get the lightbulbs now. We have possible guests coming."
"Oh just calm down old man, I'll get it." Brooklyn muttered as she got up, "It's not like anyone's gonna die if I don't get the lightbulbs anyways."
Ray dramatically sighed, "Well, you don't know that!" Ray protested. "A guy could walk under a ladder in the dark and hit his head-"
"I'm getting them, I'm getting them!" Brooklyn interjected, going into the back room. "Just please stop talking."
"Don't give me that sass," Ray snapped at her. Brooklyn silently rolled her eyes and opened the door to storage before Ray could yell again. "Wait no, stay here in case anyone comes down for the job offe-"
"Too late!" She yelled back and went into storage. 'And either way, no one comes here for the job offer, why would anyone come now?' She thought. She worked in a junk store. 'The best one' in Swellview, Junk 'N Stuff. But she didn't actually work there. No, that was just a cover-up for the bigger job. No one here actually works at the stupid junk store.
Truth was, Ray Manchester, was a superhero. Captain Man, Swellview's greatest, and only, hero. Or as Brooklyn would call him, giant man-baby.
Brooklyn had a role in this too. She was his guy in the chair, leading him around in his missions, which were badly failing now, thanks to Captain Man's old age problems and Brooklyn now starting middle school. Hence the Help Wanted sign in their store.
Once she got in, she sank onto the floor in exhaustion. Brooklyn closed her eyes for a moment, taking in deep breaths before getting back up and rummaging around. "It's gotta be here somewhere," she muttered. "Rubber duckies, fake arm, empty box, glasses, whatever the heck this is," she called out, throwing the miscellaneous things into another pile on the other side of the room.
It took her almost about thirty minutes until she finally found the box filled with lightbulbs. "Ray, you really need to clean this place out!" Brooklyn yelled with a small sigh of relief. She picked up the two boxes and stacked them on top of each other, then brought them back with a skip. "Okay! I got the-" her heart stopped, seeing a blonde boy about her age standing there and Ray jumping up and down, attempting to zip up his suit.
"I can't believe I'm standing here, talking to Captain Man!" the boy excitedly exclaimed, not noticing Brooklyn behind him in total shock.
She dropped the boxes, causing the lightbulbs to shatter. This finally caught the attention of Ray and the boy and they both turned to look at her. Brooklyn gave a death glare to the boy out of pure hatred. "YOU!?"
The boy raised a hand in fear before realizing it was Brooklyn. His jaw dropped too, "Y-You!?" He gasped out in surprise. Although his expression had no hate in it, his tone slightly said otherwise "I-Wha- you!?"
"My lightbulbs!" Ray gasped, rushing to the lightbulbs. The two kids watched Ray for a moment, before looking back at each other in annoyance. Brooklyn silently glared at the boy and the boy gave a glare back, in more of a mocking way.
Henry Hart.
It just had to be him. Out of all the people Brooklyn despised, he had to be the one who came here.
They've been rivals since the third grade. Two completely opposite kids. With one being the class idiot and the other being the rule follower. Bad grades versus good grades rivalry. They always try to outshine one another, no matter what the cost would have been. Which in Henry's case, always led towards some sort of gradely wide incident. It started in third grade with the balloon animals incident, in fourth grade it was the zoo incident, in fifth grade was the science class incident, and so on. Each resolved with Henry getting the spotlight and Brooklyn getting dragged into the mess, also getting blamed for the action.
And Brooklyn hated him for it. With all her heart.
And Henry hated her for hating him. With all his heart.
"What the heck! Why is he here?!" Brooklyn finally asked, turning to Ray.
"Why is she here!?" Henry asked at the same time
"Wait you two know each other?" Ray asked, clearly shocked, "Like, you guys have met before? Where? At like school or-"
"Ray!" Brooklyn snapped.
"What is she doing here?!" Henry asked again, "What is she your daughter or somethin-"
"You're really that dumb to think I'm his daughter?" Brooklyn scoffed. "I knew you were an idiot, Hart, but that's just low."
"Then what are you doing here?!" He asked, raising his voice
Brooklyn groaned, "What do you think I'm doing here?!"
Henry gave a frustrated sigh, "I don't know?! I literally can only think of him being you dad!" he exclaimed
"HE ISN'T MY DAD!" Brooklyn yelled, shutting Henry up quickly and groaned, then looked at Ray, "I am not putting up with this for my whole life. Why can't I be your sidekick? I already know the inside to it all." she reasoned.
Ray sighed, "You know the answer to that question. It's a no." He told her, leaving Brooklyn whining and pouting. "Yeah, look who's the big baby now!" He teased.
"Is anyone gonna answer my question?" Henry piped up again, "What is she doing here?"
Brooklyn let out a deep sigh. "You know how Batman has Alfred? Or like, Iron Man has J.A.R.V.I.S.? Well, Captain Man has me as his, um, what's the phrase?" She asked Ray.
"The guy in the chair?" Ray pointed out.
"Yeah, the guy in the chair! I give an overview on missions and all, even though I should be fighting out there," She muttered, "Satisfied with your answer?"
"Kinda," Henry whispered.
"You kids done bickering?" Ray asked and the two just slowly nodded, "Great! Anyway, this is just perfect! You guys will get along superbly! It's great that you know each other!" Ray happily exclaimed, clasping his hands together.
"No! No that's not great!" Brooklyn protested, "Especially when that kid is Henry Hart! What the heck are you even doing here!? You're one of the laziest people at school, and you came here for a job?!"
Henry's, mouth opened to talk. "I'm gonna pretend not to be hurt by that," he muttered.
Brooklyn threw him a sarcastic smile, then looked at Ray. "If it's between me dying and me having to work with this kid, I call dying," she muttered and went towards Auto Snacker, "He's too immature for this job!"
"Like you're mature," Ray scoffed.
Brooklyn laughed, "I am more than him!" she told Ray, jamming her finger toward Henry. She angrily put her hand on the auto snacker, "Chocolate Milk." she muttered and the door to the snacker opened, revealing a glass with chocolate milk and a straw. She took it, glaring at Henry as she sipped on it.
"Eh! He'll grow on to ya! And maybe even more than just grow," Ray said with a smirk and Brooklyn gagged. "Kidding, kidding! Anyways, Henrrryyy! My man! What'd you think?"
"This is... a bit weird, but also so cool!" Henry gasped out. "I can't believe this!"
"What, are you a fan?" Ray asked with a smile, "Do you like me?" he boasted with a smiling smolder. "Because most people like me, but not everyone." his smile quickly faded and he lightly played with his hands.
Henry scoffed softly, "Uh, yeah! I'm a huge fan!" he exclaimed, taking out his phone. "Oh, man! I gotta tell Jasper about this! He's gonna freak when I tell him that I'm here standing with Cap-"
Ray took out a small remote-looking gadget from his belt and directed it towards Henry's phone. He pressed a button and a laser came at it, causing Henry to throw it in the air. The phone landed on the floor completely broken and burnt. Brooklyn choked out a laugh, biting on the straw of her chocolate milk. "See, this is what I call entertainment!" she chuckled softly, sitting criss-cross on the circular couch, earning a glare from Henry.
"Sorry, but you can't tell your friends about this." Ray sighed, putting the remote back in his pocket.
"Okay! But-" Henry crouched down and pinched the end on his phone, trying to not burn his fingers as he picked up his phone and looked at Ray, "Diddya have to melt my phone?!"
Brooklyn laughed, "I think it was necessary." she told them.
"I wasn't asking you," Henry snapped.
Brooklyn sarcastically pouted, "Awww, well I answered"
"I get you a new one!" Ray told him, interjecting Henry from answering Brooklyn.
Henry smiled in a bit of a surprise, "Really?"
"No."
Henry sighed and turned around as Ray went to stand next to Brooklyn. "So Henry!" he exclaimed, clasping his hands. "Tell me why you want a job!"
"He wants money," Brooklyn muttered to Ray, earning a bitting smile from Ray.
"Well, uh, you know," Henry hesitated, pacing a bit, "To uh, learn responsibility, and uh, challenge me." he lied, trying to seem convincing with a wide smile.
"So, like Brooklyn said. You want money?" Ray asked, arching an eyebrow at him with another small scoff.
"Lots of money," Henry said, nodding with wide eyes.
Brooklyn put her chocolate milk on a table with a scoff, "What's the point of hiring him if he's only here for the money!" She pointed out.
"To be fair, Brook" Henry started and Brooklyn gave him another death-defying glare, "...lyn! Brooklyn! I um, didn't know this was a superhero job, so." he pointed out.
Brooklyn groaned, "Look, all I'm saying is that he's not the best fit!" She motioned towards Henry as she looked at Ray, "He's an idiot! A complete idiot! And a moron! An... idioron!"
"That's not a word-" Henry started.
"You know what I mean," she snapped. She hated this. She hated this so much already. And nothing, nothing could change her mind.
I am so sorry if this is a disappointment π
and I'm sorry it took so long
BUT I DID IT AND I'M SEMI-PROUD YALL I HOPE IT WASN'T TOO CLICHΓ AND ALL:))
