Akutagawa x Reader was requested by Gemstani! Enjoy~

You were trying to get his attention. You wanted him to notice you that you were in love with him. But you couldn't because one, you were a little shy on confessing your feelings to him and two, you didn't want to get rejected. Plus, he's really cold and distant so all you two talk about is always about mission or work related. You've been at it for so long that people in the workplace started to notice your feelings for him and also your trial and error for Akutagawa noticing you.

And today was your special day- it was your birthday. Everyone knew your birth date including Akutagawa. You've received wonderful presents from Higuchi to the boss to Chuuya as well since you two have gotten really close. But you didn't get any gifts from Akutagawa yet.

"Um, Akutagawa san?" you chirped, standing in front of his desk.

"What is it?"

You opened your mouth to say something but you bit your lip. You wanted to say it was your birthday but you didn't want to seem like a needy person for presents so you stayed quiet. Although you wanted him to say at least happy birthday to you. All the people in the office were working quietly and at the same time, listening to the conversation between you and Akutagawa.

You shook your head and tried to give a bright smile. "Nothing... I just wanted to know how your day went!"

"Tch. If you wanted to ask a dumb question like that then I suggest you leave. You're wasting my time."

Then you thought of something great you can do with him. You blushed slightly as you made your request. "Would you like to go somewhere to eat tonight?"

Akutagawa looked up from his papers to you. "Huh? Why?"

"Because today is my special day. It's my birthday!" you tried to sound all cheery but it didn't work on him.

"Why do you want to go with me? Wouldn't you want to go with a person like Chuuya san?" he replied with his venom filled tone.

You laughed nervously. "I guess you don't want to come with me afterall?"

"You're exactly right. If you knew the answer from the start why even bother asking the question?" his voice was starting to rise and you knew you angered him.

"S-Sorry for disturbing you... I'll leave..." you bowed slightly, walking out the office feeling your head in the clouds. You sighed loudly, clutching your heart. Why couldn't you say those words to him?

"Oi, Akutagawa... That wasn't the best way to turn her down." Chuuya chimed in as he got out from his chair and walked over to him. Chuuya put both of his hands on his desk, looking pretty serious.

"Do you have a problem, Chuuya san? She's clearly a pest, always asking me to attend her ridiculous outings." Akutagawa gathered the stack of papers together, grumbling.

"Ok... I never knew you were this dense... Have you not realized?"

"Realized what?"

Chuuya let out a sigh. "Well, I wasn't surprised anyway..."

"You mean (F/N), right?"

Chuuya's eyes lit up as he nodded. "Yes! Her and her birthday today! She wanted you to do something special for her."

"If (F/N) can't work properly and is blinded by romance, I'll hire another assistant." his tone was sharp and stern as if he was ending this conversation.

You were making your last minute changes to your report on your computer during the afternoon. You glanced at the clock. Your special day was almost coming to an end and still nothing from Akutagawa. A sigh escaped your lips until a slight raspy voice echoed through the room.

"What are you sighing for, (F/N)? Don't tell me you don't like the job you've been so lucky to have." it was Akutagawa.

"N-No... It's nothing..." sadness started to fill your eyes and you slowly started to feel your lips quiver. Akutagawa raised an eyebrow. It was so rare for you to get so quiet all of a sudden and not to mention you looking a bit sorrow.

"Then why are you about to cry? Is this job not good enough for you?" he asked.

"No." you replied quickly in an edgy tone. You could feel yourself about to lose it. You walked towards him slowly and lifted up your head to face him.

"Am I not good enough for you, Akutagawa san?" you asked, making the male feel a bit uneasy of himself.

"What are you talking about?"

Your vision became blurry, feeling the brink of your tears in the corner of your eyes. "Whenever I'm around you, you don't seem very happy even if I tried to cheer you up... And you always scold me and hit me when I make an error. And I try, Akutagawa san... I try so hard to make you the happiest person in the world but you seem the unhappiest instead! So I-" you sniffed, feeling a single tear roll down your cheeks.

"I was wondering if I was good enough for you as an assistant..."

Akutagawa was still not convinced. Even your cute tiny little tears pouring out one by one did not waver his cold-blooded heart. He narrowed his eyes at you, looking at you with a nasty scowl. "If you think so, then why don't you quit?"

Your eyes widened in shock, feeling a sledgehammer shatter through your fragile thin glass of heart. You gripped onto his black clothing, gritting your teeth.

"Akutagawa san, you're such a jerk..." you laughed quietly but it was half-hearted. Leaving your bits of emotions behind, making Akutagawa think he's done something wrong.

Truth is, he hated seeing you hurt like that a few minutes ago. You always seemed to put on the brightest smiles ever, even in desperate situations. And instead of seeing you all happy and cheerful, he hated the fact that you were crying because of him. He grumbled a few words as he trotted through the city night until he saw a young man dragging a cart of roses behind him. There was a huge sign that said, 'Lovely flowers for the one!'

Maybe... Was it too late?

You wiped the last bit of tears in your eyes as you fast paced through the streets. How dare he say that you should quit! You would never quit, even if it means your life depended on it. But still, your heart was still bleeding with no bandages or love to fix it up. Well, you've been pretty much dumped by Akutagawa... What now?

"And he didn't do anything special for my birthday or let alone didn't even say 'happy birthday' to me... I was anticipating for him to say it the most..." you muttered, stopping in your tracks as you gazed up to look at the beautiful night sky and the stars were glittering and shimmering with all its might.

'If he could understand this feeling... Then maybe will he fall for me?'

"I've been looking for you." came in a voice. You squeaked, jumping up in surprise as you turned around to see Akutagawa standing by a tree.

"M-Me?" you pointed to yourself obliviously.

"Yes, you. Who else would I be addressing to?" he asked, quite annoyed.

You suppressed a slight chuckle. Ah, you smiled again. And how relieved Akutagawa felt when he saw your beautiful laughter.

"Sorry... I was thinking about something..." suddenly, something hit you. You put your two hands to your mouth in a gasping expression. "By any chance did you hear what I said?!"

A slight blush formed in his cheeks as he shooked his head. "I didn't hear anything." Oh, how selfish he was that he wanted what you said about him all to himself...

A rush of relief hit you. You were too busy thinking about yourself that you didn't see him blush. "Oh, thank goodness! It would of been embarrassing if you heard that... And I would of gotten slapped..." your expression darkened again and so did Akutagawa's.

"I wouldn't have slapped you."

"Eh?"

"I said, I wouldn't have slapped you. Because I liked what you said."

You couldn't help but to flush. "Then what would you done?"

From behind his back, he pulled out a single bright red rose, showing it off between you two. "I would have said, 'Happy Birthday'."

Your eyes twinkled around like the shining stars in the midnight sky, your cheeks being all fluffy and pink. He handed the rose to you gently, as you touched it- almost afraid that you would break it because it was the most precious thing you've received to the most anticipated person you've been waiting for.

Akutagawa cleared his throat, his cheeks still slightly blushing. "I know you were trying to give me hints that it was your birthday and you wanted me to do something special for you. I'm not dense... Just shy."

So he wasn't dense afterall. He was shy, just like you were shy to confessing your love to him. Pursing your lips into a small but a grateful smile you whispered.

"Thank you so much, Akutagawa san. I'll cherish this forever..."
