Fuyuhiko was angry. This mission was supposed to be straightforward; there shouldn't have been any miscommunications. Hannah was meant to be with the main group, and yet, from what Takumi had said, she'd been taken, pulled from safety and thrust into a situation that could have cost her life.
His frown deepened as he paced the hallway, the flickering fire casting long shadows across the walls. Who would want to do that? Why would anyone target her? The thought gnawed at him like a relentless predator.
His frustration boiled over as he recalled the clan members from the water team, their faces filled with confusion and a hint of regret, yet it was clear they hadn't fully grasped the gravity of their actions. They were supposed to protect her, not endanger her. "What the hell were they thinking?" he muttered under his breath, his anger morphing into a simmering rage.
He ran a hand through his hair, trying to collect his thoughts. Each passing moment without a clear answer made the pit in his stomach grow heavier. There was no way this was just an accident.
"Riku." he called out suddenly, his voice slicing through the silence of the room. Riku, who had been speaking with Mei about the situation, turned to face him, concern etched on his features. "I need you to gather everyone from the water team."
Riku's brow furrowed. "Right now?"
"Yeah, right now." Fuyuhiko snapped, the intensity in his voice leaving no room for argument. "I want to know exactly what happened and how Hannah ended up there. We're going to get to the bottom of this."
Riku nodded, understanding the urgency in Fuyuhiko's tone. He quickly left the room to round up the members, and Fuyuhiko's mind raced with possibilities. Was it possible that someone on the inside had orchestrated this? Had someone deliberately put Hannah in harm's way?
Mei approached cautiously, her expression serious. "Fuyuhiko, I know you're upset, but we need to stay calm. Jumping to conclusions won't help us figure this out."
He shot her a glare, the firelight reflecting the anger in his eyes. "How can you expect me to stay calm when I don't even know if she's safe? She was in the water- she could have drowned, Mei!"
"I understand." she said softly, placing a hand on his arm. "But we need to gather facts first. Accusing anyone without evidence won't do us any good. Let's just hear what they have to say."
Fuyuhiko took a deep breath, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly at her words. She was right; he needed to focus on gathering information before making accusations. But the thought of Hannah in danger made it hard to think straight.
Minutes later, Riku returned with a few of the members from the water team, their expressions a mix of guilt and uncertainty. Fuyuhiko stood at the center, arms crossed, his piercing gaze scanning each of them as he prepared to get to the bottom of this mess.
"Alright." he said, his tone sharp and authoritative. "Tell me exactly how you thought Hannah ended up on your team. How did you get her?"
One of the younger members, Daiki, hesitated for a moment before speaking up. "She was brought over to us by someone else." he admitted, glancing nervously at his comrades as if hoping for their support.
"Brought over? By who?" Fuyuhiko pressed, frustration creeping into his voice. The implications were clear: someone had manipulated the situation, and he needed to know who was responsible.
"I don't know his name," Daiki continued, "but he said there was a mix-up. He claimed Hannah was supposed to be part of our group because she was feeling unwell and needed to get away from the main team."
Fuyuhiko's jaw tightened as he processed this information. "You didn't question it? You didn't verify it with anyone?"
"We were busy preparing." another member, Kira, chimed in defensively. "We thought someone from the main group had sent her over. He seemed trustworthy."
"Trustworthy?" Fuyuhiko echoed incredulously. "You put her safety in the hands of a stranger? You should have checked! She's not just any clan member- she's a Togami and she's been through hell. You should have been protecting her!"
The group shifted uneasily under his glare, and he could see guilt washing over them. Riku stepped in, sensing the rising tension. "We need to find out who this person was." he said, his voice steady. "If he was able to get her away from the main group so easily, we need to understand how and why."
"Exactly." Fuyuhiko agreed, taking a deep breath to calm himself. "We need to gather descriptions. Can anyone tell me what this guy looked like?"
Several members exchanged looks, their brows furrowing in thought. "He was wearing a dark jacket and had a hood up." Daiki finally said, frowning as he tried to remember more details. "But I don't think any of us saw his face clearly."
Kira nodded in agreement. "Yeah, he kept to the shadows, and it was hard to make out anything other than that. He had a confident air about him, like he knew what he was doing."
Fuyuhiko clenched his fists, feeling a cold anger settle in the pit of his stomach. "Confident enough to manipulate you into handing Hannah over? Great. Just what I needed."
"Fuyuhiko," Riku said, his voice firm but calming, "let's not jump to conclusions. We still need to piece this together. There might be a chance someone from the Morioka clan was posing as a Kuzuryu member."
"Or worse." Fuyuhiko added, his voice low. "What if it's someone within our own clan? Someone who wants to put Hannah back in danger?"
The members exchanged uneasy glances, fear and doubt creeping into their expressions. "No one would do that." Kira whispered, her voice barely audible.
"Wouldn't they?" Fuyuhiko snapped, unable to hide his frustration. "We need to keep our eyes open and be vigilant. This is a wake-up call for all of us. I want each of you to be on high alert. If you see anyone acting suspiciously or if anyone mentions Hannah, report it to me immediately."
The group nodded, some appearing more determined than others.
"Now.." Fuyuhiko's eyes darkened as he stared down the water team, his voice a razor's edge of anger. "How did you get her into the water?" His tone was low, dangerous. He knew Hannah too well, she wouldn't have willingly entered the water, especially knowing she couldn't swim. If she didn't want to do something, she wouldn't. She was stubborn like that.
The group in front of him fell silent, their eyes darting nervously among each other. No one dared to speak, the weight of Fuyuhiko's anger pressing down on them. He took a step forward, his gaze piercing. "I asked you a question. How the hell did you get her in the water?"
After another long, uncomfortable pause, one of the younger clan members, Daiki, cleared his throat. He was visibly sweating, his voice trembling as he spoke. "She... she was refusing to go in."
Fuyuhiko's eyes narrowed, his patience thinning. "So why did she end up in the water then?"
Daiki hesitated again, his eyes dropping to the ground as if he couldn't bear to meet Fuyuhiko's gaze. "We thought... we thought she was just nervous." he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "So we... pushed her in."
For a second, the room fell into an eerie silence as Fuyuhiko processed the words. His mind went blank, the gravity of what Daiki had said hitting him all at once. His fists clenched, and a cold fury seeped into his voice. "You. Pushed her. In?"
Daiki flinched under the weight of Fuyuhiko's rage, his face pale. "We didn't know she couldn't swim!" he stammered, desperate to explain. "We thought she was just scared of the water. We thought if she got in, she'd... she'd be fine."
Fuyuhiko's breath came in slow, controlled bursts as he struggled to keep his emotions in check. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. Hannah, who couldn't swim, who had been drugged and barely conscious, had been shoved into the water because they'd thought she was "nervous"? His chest tightened, the image of her struggling, gasping for air, flashing in his mind.
"You thought?" Fuyuhiko repeated, his voice dangerously calm. "You thought forcing her into the water would help?"
Kira, standing beside Daiki, looked down at the floor, shame written across her face. "We didn't realize how serious it was until she... until she couldn't stay afloat."
"She could've drowned." Fuyuhiko spat, his anger rising to the surface, threatening to explode. "Do you have any idea what could have happened? She's not just anybody. She's important- to me!"
"I'm sorry." Daiki said, his voice barely a whisper. "We didn't mean for things to get this bad."
"Sorry doesn't fix this." Fuyuhiko shot back, the intensity in his voice making the group shrink away from him. He could feel his temper spiraling, but he couldn't stop himself. "You all should have known better. You should have asked her, should have checked before forcing her into something she wasn't capable of doing. Now she's been hurt, and it's on you."
The weight of his words hung heavy in the air, the members standing in front of him looking like they wanted to disappear. Fuyuhiko's mind raced with frustration, confusion, and fear. He was furious at their carelessness, but even more so, he was terrified at how close he had come to losing her.
"You people aren't stupid! You're apart of the Kuzuryu Clan for a fucking reason." He took a step back, closing his eyes for a moment to gather himself. He needed to stay level-headed. Getting angrier wouldn't help Hannah now. "Get out of my sight." he finally said, his voice cold. "You're lucky she's alive. If anything like this happens again, I'll personally make sure you regret it."
The members hurried away, their heads hanging low, and Riku stayed behind, watching Fuyuhiko with concern. "Fuyuhiko," he said softly, "they didn't mean to put her in harm's way."
Fuyuhiko turned to Riku, his voice quieter but no less intense. "They didn't mean to, but they almost killed her."
Riku nodded, understanding. "We'll find out who that man was- the one who brought her to them. Whoever he is, this was deliberate. It wasn't just a misunderstanding."
Fuyuhiko sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I know. Someone wanted her vulnerable. And now we have a bigger problem, there's a mole in the clan, feeding the Morioka information."
He thought back to the man in the dark hoodie, the figure Kira had seen lurking in the shadows. Whoever it was had known exactly how to manipulate the situation, to put Hannah in the water where she'd be defenseless.
"I'm going to find out who it is." Fuyuhiko vowed, his jaw tight with determination. "And when I do, I'll make sure they pay for what they've done."
Riku nodded, placing a hand on Fuyuhiko's shoulder. "We'll get to the bottom of this, Fuyuhiko. For now, let's focus on making sure Hannah is okay."
Fuyuhiko's gaze softened slightly as he glanced toward the room where Hannah rested. "Yeah. She's been through enough already."
Fuyuhiko returned to the living room, his heart heavy as he saw Hannah curled up in front of the fire. The flickering flames cast a soft glow on her pale face, but she looked so small, so vulnerable. He sat down beside her, the warmth of the fire doing little to ease the cold knot of anger and fear that still twisted in his chest.
He watched her for a moment, unsure of how to start. Her body was still trembling, her wet hair clinging to her face, and the haunted look in her eyes told him everything. She had been terrified. After a long pause, he finally spoke, his voice low and gentle. "Hannah... are you okay?"
Hannah didn't answer immediately. She stared into the flames, her expression distant, as if trying to block out everything that had just happened. But after a moment, she shook her head, her lips pressing together as she fought to keep herself composed. "N-no.." she whispered, her voice breaking slightly. "I... I thought I was going to drown, Fuyuhiko."
Fuyuhiko's heart clenched painfully. He knew she must've been terrified, but hearing her say it out loud cut deeper than he expected. He had failed to protect her, again. He should have been there. He should have noticed something was wrong. But instead, she had been left to fend for herself, struggling in a situation she never should have been in.
"I'm so sorry, Hannah." he said, his voice filled with guilt. "I never should've let this happen. You weren't supposed to be anywhere near that water. You were supposed to be with the main group, safe."
Hannah blinked, her eyes finally meeting his, tears threatening to spill. "I don't even know how I ended up there." she whispered, her voice shaking. "Everything was so hazy. I didn't feel right the whole time... and then they just pushed me in. I couldn't breathe... I- I panicked."
Fuyuhiko clenched his fists, the rage he had felt earlier bubbling back up to the surface. Those idiots had pushed her in, thinking she was just scared. They hadn't known the full extent of her condition, but that didn't make their actions any less reckless. He should've been there, should've made sure she was never put in that situation.
"You didn't deserve that." he said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "No one should've forced you into anything, especially not when you weren't in the right state of mind."
Hannah took a shaky breath, her hand reaching up to wipe away a tear. "I felt so helpless." she admitted, her voice barely audible. "I hate feeling like that."
Fuyuhiko reached over and gently took her hand, squeezing it tightly. "I know." he said, his tone fierce with determination. "I swear to you, I'll never let something like this happen again. You're safe now, Hannah. I won't let anyone hurt you ever again."
She looked at him, her eyes searching his face for reassurance. He could see the exhaustion in her gaze, the emotional toll the night had taken on her. She wanted to believe him, but the fear still lingered in the corners of her mind.
"I'm scared, Fuyuhiko." she whispered, her voice cracking. "What if they come after me again? What if... what if next time, I don't make it?"
Fuyuhiko's grip on her hand tightened, his chest tightening at her words. The thought of losing her, of something happening to her again, made him feel sick to his stomach. But he couldn't let her see that fear in him. She needed his strength now more than ever.
"They won't." he said firmly, his voice steady despite the storm raging inside him. "I'll make sure of it. Whoever's behind this, whoever's trying to get to you, I'll find them. And when I do, they'll wish they never laid a hand on you."
Hannah didn't respond right away, her eyes falling to their joined hands. After a long moment, she leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder. He wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close, letting the warmth of the fire and his presence comfort her.
"I'm sorry.." she whispered again, her voice muffled against his shirt. "I just... I feel like a burden. You've done so much for me, and I keep dragging you into danger."
Fuyuhiko's heart ached at her words, and he shook his head, tightening his hold on her. "You're not a burden, Hannah. Not to me. I want you here. I want you safe, and I'll do whatever it takes to make sure of that. Don't ever think you're dragging me down, I chose this, and I'd choose it again."
She didn't say anything after that, but he could feel the tension in her body slowly start to ease as she relaxed into his embrace. The fear wasn't gone, it wouldn't disappear overnight, but for now, she knew she wasn't alone. Fuyuhiko would be by her side, no matter what came next.
Fuyuhiko's mind raced as he held Hannah close. He remembered what Takumi had said: that Hannah had a migraine and someone had dragged her away from the group, saying they were taking her back to him. But Fuyuhiko hadn't seen her until she was pulled from the water. Something wasn't adding up, and the thought gnawed at him.
He shifted slightly, loosening his grip on her just enough to look at her face. "Hannah." he said gently, his voice steady but curious, "I need you to help me figure out what happened. Can you remember anything after you left Takumi and Mei?"
Hannah furrowed her brow, clearly struggling to pull the memories from the fog that had clouded her mind. "I... I don't know." she mumbled, her voice faint. "Everything's so blurry. My head was hurting so much..."
Fuyuhiko nodded, encouraging her gently. "It's okay. Just take your time. Do you remember who took you? Did you see their face?"
Hannah closed her eyes, as if trying to force the memory to the surface. "He grabbed my arm." she muttered, her words slow, like she was piecing them together. "He said he'd take me back to you... but I don't remember his face. I just... I just wanted the pain to stop."
Fuyuhiko frowned, his suspicions growing. Someone had deliberately separated her from the group, under the guise of bringing her to him. "Did he do anything? Say anything else?"
Hannah shook her head slowly, her expression tightening in frustration. "No... but... there was something else." She paused for a moment, then her eyes widened slightly. "The tablet."
Fuyuhiko's heart skipped a beat. "Tablet?"
She nodded weakly. "He gave me a tablet... said it would help my head. And... and I took it." Her voice trailed off, her eyes staring blankly ahead as if she were reliving the moment. "Right after, I... I felt so dizzy. My vision... everything went blurry. I could barely stand."
Fuyuhiko's jaw tightened. So, someone had drugged her. His suspicions were confirmed, whoever had taken Hannah hadn't just led her away from the group. They had incapacitated her, made her more vulnerable. And then they'd handed her off to the water team, knowing she wouldn't be able to resist.
"Do you remember what the tablet looked like?" he asked, his voice more urgent now. "Anything about it?"
Hannah blinked, trying to focus. "It was small... white, I think. I didn't even think about it. I just wanted the pain to stop." She looked up at him, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and regret. "I'm sorry, Fuyuhiko. I didn't know..."
Fuyuhiko's grip tightened around her, though his anger wasn't directed at her. "Don't apologize. This isn't your fault. Someone set this up, they knew you were in pain, and they took advantage of that." His mind raced, thinking of who in his clan could be behind this. There had to be a traitor feeding information to Saito's clan, but now it was worse; someone within the Kuzuryu clan had actively endangered Hannah.
His blood boiled at the thought. Whoever was responsible, they wouldn't get away with this.
"I'm going to find out who did this." he said, his voice low and full of promise. "I'll make sure they pay for what they've done."
Hannah shivered, leaning into him more as if his presence was the only thing keeping her grounded. "I don't understand... why would someone do this?"
Fuyuhiko sighed, his anger briefly giving way to a surge of protectiveness. "I don't know yet, but I'm going to find out. They're targeting you, Hannah, because they know how important you are to me. This isn't just about the clans anymore. They're trying to use you against me."
Hannah's breath hitched, and Fuyuhiko could feel her tremble in his arms. He hated that she was being dragged into the dark world of clan politics like this, but right now, all that mattered was keeping her safe. The rest, the traitor, Saito, all of it would be dealt with in time. But first, he had to make sure
