Matthew Perry-Benson

Matthew felt anxious. As did everyone at this moment.

"Are you sure Bourne won't fire us for doing this?"

Matthew looked to the scrawny intern seated across from him. He was pretty sure his name was Nate, but never actually asked to find out.

Matthew shook his head. "I don't want anything to go wrong and I certainly don't want them to be in trouble. Bourne should have set up a backup plan, including a certified team in case anything were to happen."

"I think you're doing the right thing, Agent," Darla gave him a firm nod from across the plane aisle. Matthew envied the way she was able to act so calmly under these types of situations. Still, it did make him feel better.

Agent. He liked the sound of the title, but it was at this moment he wasn't sure what exactly it meant.

Nate let out an exhale as he went back to typing rapidly on his laptop. "Okay, the best I could do was set up a SWAT team under the circumstances."

Matthew tried to chuckle. "Why, was the FBI too busy?"

"Sorry, sir, it's the best I could do under the time limit-"

"I was kidding, take it easy," Matthew gave a smile. He seriously couldn't imagine what Bourne goes through 24/7, handling this part of one case was bad enough.

The jet landed shortly. Matthew was the first to step out and into South Carolina.

"Nathan, you and your team know what to do?" Matthew started to put on the equipment accessories.

The boy gave him a nod. "We'll be in touch at all times, this way we won't be able to lose you."

"Hey Darla, where is the vehicle you arranged for me?"

Darla walked around the base, Matthew followed.

"I'm sure that this will be suitable to your liking."

In front of him stood a gorgeous motorcycle shining in black paint. Matthew's jaw hung open just slightly.

"It's the new Kawasaki Z H2- of course, redesigned to have all the latest tech gear you'll be needing to do this mission," Darla gave a gesture to hop on.

Matthew fixated on his helmet and sat on the bike, taking a deep breath.

"Remember, you'll want to locate either Vanessa's or Bourne's vehicle first before you go anywhere," Darla spoke, Matthew nodded, "and be careful."

"Yeah, you do know how to ride a motorcycle, right?" Nate chimed in.

Matthew exhaled again, this time nodding with a bit more confidence.

"And remember," Darla paused, making sure he was paying attention, "as long as the Lord is with you, nothing shall stand in your way."

"See you on the flip side," Nate gave a wink as he plugged in his equipment and spoke into the mic that was connected to Matthew's in-ears.

~~~
Matthew felt the adrenaline pumping through him as he rode down the freeway with the wind blowing against him.
Once he got off of the main road and into a sketchy part of town, Nate's voice appeared in his ears.
"Okay, looks like you're getting closer to where we have targetted Vanessa's vehicle. We can see her dot moving somewhere in the building."
The only building Matthew could see in the distance looked like an abandoned hospital.
Smoke clouds puffed from some area from the building, but no other settlement was nearby. Matthew wondered what this building really was before it was abandoned. Usually, hospitals were located near a city- this was in the middle of nowhere.
Hopping off the bike, he took cautious steps.
"Have you located Bourne yet?" Matthew asked the other line.
"No sir, still no signal on his part."
The sound of an explosion sounded behind the building. Matthew's steps were at a halt.
"What about Vanessa?"
"She's reached south of the building, opposite of where you are right now, but it seems like we're losing her-"
"Nate? Hey, you still there?"
"Right here, man. Audio cut off for a second there, we're not sure what's happening. It looks like signals in the area you're in are being interrupted by something. We're trying to figure it out."
"Okay. I'm heading in."
Matthew presumed to head south of the building, he just didn't know what was the best way to get there. He entered the building, looking in every direction. He knew his heart rate was raising and all his confidence went slack.
Much of the things inside the building looked rotten or burned. Mould spoiled half of the things inside, with cracks in the walls and broken pieces everywhere. He quickly bypassed what looked like rooms. Old and broken machinery Matthew couldn't identify were laid out along the sides as bedframes with chewed and dirty mattresses were set out in plain sight.
He kept walking, the ground creaked below him. He shivered at every creepy intrusive thought that tried entering his mind.
He hadn't seen anybody. No movement was detected inside the building as far as he knew and nobody was coming in from the team back at the base. He wondered if this was really where Warner was.
Smoke from another connecting hallway started leaking through. Matthew grabbed ahold of his gun, awaiting anybody he could accounter. The smoke lead him up a stairwell, and he continued to follow as paced as he could.
When he made it up the steps, he found her.
"Vanessa!"
The woman turned around, obviously scared. Her weapon was pointed directly at him.
He lifted his hands in surrender, "it's just me!"
"Matthew?" She sounded out of breath.
He wanted to race towards her and ask what was going on or if she was okay. But his glancing at the ground made him rethink his actions. Three men lay unconscious on the ground, Vanessa stood standing in the middle of it all.
"Who are these guys?"
"Warner's men."
He let the words seep in. He continued watching her, "have you located Warner?"
She shook her head no.
"What about Bourne?"
Again no. "Something happened, over on the south side. I heard something."
"The explosion?"
"Gunshots, too."
Matthew hadn't heard any gunshots, he wondered if Bourne was in trouble.
Vanessa started pointing at him, finally catching her breath. "Why are you here?"
"Bourne's connection was interrupted. I don't think it was smart that he set this whole thing up without any backup help."
Vanessa shook her head. "That's Bourne for you."
She bent down towards a man and grabbed handcuffs, making sure he stayed put. Matthew started doing the same to another guy.
The third man started moving around, Matthew pinned his arm with his foot as Vanessa buckled the cuffs.
"What's your name?" Vanessa asked him in a harsh tone.
"Like I'll tell you," the man tried wiggling his way out.
Matthew stepped on his cheek, putting pressure and slightly squishing his face. Vanessa looked amused.
"Where's Warner?" Vanessa asked again.
When he didn't answer, Matthew applied more pressure.
"He escaped okay?! Warner left the building with some sticks of dynamite. Pretty sure that's why the ground is shaking."
Vanessa stood, looking at Matthew. "Is the ground shaking to you?"
Matthew did feel the ground start to vibrate as cracks across the walls of the hallways started forming.
"We gotta get out of here," he said.
"Where did he go?" Vanessa was asking the man.
"I don't know! He doesn't tell us these things!"
The shaking was getting worse.
"We don't have time for this, we have to go find him," Vanessa tried looking for a way out.
"What about Bourne?"
The smoke entered the room much quicker, Matthew could tell the fire was spreading. The building was about to collapse.
"Come on we just have to go!" Vanessa looked panicked, it was clear she didn't which way to go or what to do or who to look for.
Matthew quickly grabbed her arm and they headed towards another hall. In the distance, someone was yelling.
"Charlie! Giselle!"
"Is that Bourne?" Vanessa asked.
"I really hope so."
They both started running towards him.
