ASTRID, chapter eight 

❝you need more than just silly words to get me back❞

Odette walked to miss Thornhills class with Georgia as she held her palm to her head. "What were you thinking" Georgia asked her friend with a smirk "I'm glad my pain is humerous to you" Odette said "It is humorous to me because not only did you get drunk in the middle of the day, you got drunk at school!" she whisper shouted at her friend with a bright smile.  

Odette just groaned. "I was only supposed to have one and then I ended up having a couple of more and then I went up to xavier and-"

"Oh god what did you do?" Georgia said, stopping her friend in their tracks "nothing"

"did you slap him?"

"no"

"did you kick him in the balls?"

"no, worse"

"what could be worse?"

"I flirted with him" Odette admitted like she had just committed crime. 

Georgia just laughed at Odette who was looking down at her feet "oh c'mon what's wrong about a little flirting" she smiled "I've been flirting with Wednesday all week and we both know that would never happen" Georgia shrugged hiding the tad disappointment behind the words. 

"because I am supposed to be mad at him" Odette grumbled before they walked into the greenhouse only to see Enid and Wednesday sitting next to each other and Georgia running off to sit next to Ajax leaving Odette to sit next to Xavier who's head was stuck in his notebook.

"I hate you" Odette whisper shouted to Georgia who gave her a thumbs up. 

Taking a deep breath in Odette walked over to Xavier's table "hey" she said standing before him "hey" he replied back placing his book down "Is anyone sitting there?" she asked trying to rush out the words which made Xavier smile before looking around "well I mean there is no other spots so yeah" he replied before bringing his chair in to let Odette go through and sit down. 

Odette could feel a gaze upon her so when she looked up she was surprised to see that Bianca was looking at her, but it wasn't with hatred or disgust like she looked at Wednesday moments before class, Bianca looked at her with soft jealousy. 

Bianca looked down quickly when Odette caught her but her eyebrows furrowed. Why would Bianca Barclay the girl who was pretty, smart and the best at almost everything be looking at Odette Clarence with jealousy. 

"hey look" Xavier said tapping Odette's shoulder shifting her attention to Xavier's notebook which had black angel wings drawn in it, he hovered his hand over the drawing before it came to life and the wings swayed back and forth around Odette.

Odette didn't realise her smile was so bright until the wings landed on her necklace. 

It was the exact shape and design.

Odette looked at Xavier as he smiled to himself, seeing Odette's reaction brang upon a feeling that he had never had before. 

"Is this apart of your apology" Odette asked "I thought I already did?" he asked her

"Xavier I was half drunk you're going to have to do more than just silly words to earn me back, like you ever had me anyways" she smiled before carefully pushing the wings to the corner of the table.

"I never had you properly" he said as she just nodded, keeping her head to the board as miss Thornhill started. 

"Who can tell us the name"- shocking, Bianca had already put her hand up as the teacher even asked the question. 

"dendrophylax lindenii" 

Odette turned her head to the voice to find Wednesday sitting up straight and looking proud of herself. 

Odette put her hand out for a low high five but Wednesday just stared at her hand before Bianca called out. 

"otherwise known as the ghost orchid" she said, her body now facing Miss Thornhill.

"First discovered on the isle of Wight in 1854"

Bianca's stare was cold as Miss Thornhill smiled. "Very good Wednesday, looks like you may have some competition for first chair Bianca"

Odette laughed to herself as she silently applauded Wednesday who sat behind her, Enid joining in with a smile. 

"Wednesday, perhaps you can Identify the ghost orchids  greatest qualities?" 

"resilience and adaptability, it's able to survive in the most hostile environments" Wednesday started "but it's mere presence can change the ecosystem, causing the established plants to reject it" Bianca added

Odette watched the two like a tennis game and so did the rest of the class as the two went on about the plant, nobody else getting the chance to add in some information. 

"Thankyou, ladies, for that illuminating insights. Clearly the plants aren't the only carnivores in class today" Miss Thornhill said before she gave out homework for the week. 

"You and your desk partner today must raise a different plant and write about it in these diaries I will give to you, you will have till the end of the year to name, look after, take shifts and make sure it blooms correctly and you'll pass, to help you off I will not give any other homework in this class for the next of the semester whilst you make a plan" Miss Thornhill smiled before she revealed the tray of plants. 

Odette got up quickly to grab a nice looking plant, that's when a bright blue sprout caught her eye, she grabbed it and went back to her table with Xavier. 

"Guess we're partners then" she smiled slightly "yeah guess so" he nodded as an awkward silence passed through them. 

"what shall we name him or her you can choose" Xavier said looking towards the plant. 

Odette looked at the plant with squinted eyes as she looked at it closely. 

at first she decided it was a girl. Then she thought of a name.

"I like the name Astrid"

"Astrid?" Xavier asked and Odette nodded "I watched crazy rich asians the other day and she is my favourite character".

"Is that the movie where the family is like crazy rich?" Xavier asked and Odette just stared at him.

"It's in the name Xavier" she said blunty at him still in confusion of how stupid the question was "It's pretty self explanatory" she added on.

"Yeah I like the name Astrid" Xavier quickly nodded, trying to steer Odette out of the way of his stupid question. 

The two were just confused as each other now as they stared at the plant or Astrid until miss ThornHill walked over. 

"Oh look at that you two are co-parents of a lovely Delphinium" she smiled as she gave the two pieces of paper "I might say I am proud of you guys for choosing a dangerous plant. 

Odettes jaw dropped to the floor as she looked at the plant. 

"I only chose it cause it looked pretty".
