Isaac leaned back in his chair at the Grill, nursing a drink he probably shouldnโt be having, but the sting in his chest and the ache in his head from the events of the past few days had him numb. His phone buzzed in his pocket, but he didnโt bother checking it. He didnโt care right now. Everything felt like a blur, and his brain couldnโt keep up with the mess of thoughts.
He took a sip, the alcohol burning in his throat, but it helped dull the chaos in his head.
Matt was behind the bar, glancing over occasionally, probably making sure Isaac didnโt get too out of hand. Heโd let Isaac have a drink, not bothering to check IDs anymoreโMatt had known Isaac since he was a kid. It didnโt hurt to bend the rules now and then, especially with everything Isaac had been dealing with.
โAnother one?โ Matt called from across the bar, but Isaac waved him off, wanting to just sit and be alone with his thoughts.
He was about to take another sip when someone slid into the seat next to him.
Isaac glanced over, surprised to see Damon Salvatore, the guy who was always around but never really part of anything. Theyโd crossed paths once before, but that was it. Isaac didnโt know what to make of himโhe was a stranger, yet something about Damon always seemed... different. The kind of guy who exuded power and danger. The kind of guy Isaac had always been warned to steer clear of.
โYou look like youโre trying to drink away your problems,โ Damon said, his tone casual but piercing.
Isaac shrugged, staring into his glass. โIโm not doing much of anything. Justโฆ here.โ
Damon let out a soft chuckle, taking a sip of his own drink. โThatโs the thing about running away from your problems. They always catch up with you.โ
Isaacโs brow furrowed, but he didnโt respond immediately. He wasnโt sure what Damon meant by that, but something in his eyes told Isaac that maybe, just maybe, this guy understood more than he let on.
โYou look like youโve got that lost puppy look about you,โ Damon added with a smirk. โBeen there. Seen it. Done it.โ
Isaac met Damonโs eyes, the weight of his words sinking in. โYeah? Howโd you get over it?โ
Damonโs gaze softened, but just for a moment before it turned back to a smirk. โYou donโt. You just get used to it.โ
Isaac wasnโt sure if that was supposed to be comforting or not. Damon was enigmatic, his presence both intimidating and strangely familiar. It was almost as if Damon could see into Isaacโs soul, recognize the mess inside him, and yet, there was no judgment, only a detached understanding.
โYou remind me of someone,โ Damon said, almost to himself, though his gaze was locked on Isaac. โSomeone I used to know. Young. Full of potential. Just trying to figure things out in a world that doesnโt give a damn.โ
Isaac frowned, his curiosity piqued. โWho?โ
Damon looked down at his drink for a moment, as if considering how much he should reveal. Then he chuckled, a dark, almost regretful sound. โDoesnโt matter. Heโs long gone now.โ
Isaac felt a pang in his chest, a flicker of recognition. He couldnโt help but wonder if Damon was talking about himself. There was something in the way Damon said itโtoo much experience, too many layersโthat made Isaac think maybe Damon wasnโt just a charming, mysterious stranger. Maybe he understood the mess of being young, confused, and searching for something more.
โYou ever feel like youโre caught between two worlds?โ Isaac asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Damon looked at him sharply, his eyes studying Isaac for a long moment. โI know exactly how that feels.โ He leaned back in his chair, the slightest smirk curling at his lips. โIt doesnโt get better. You just get better at pretending it does.โ
Isaac wasnโt sure what to say to that. He couldnโt tell if Damon was trying to help or if he was just giving him a cold dose of reality, but there was something comforting about the raw honesty in Damonโs words. He didnโt try to sugarcoat anything.
โSo, what do you do?โ Isaac asked, now more curious than ever. โWhen you realize the world doesnโt give a damn and youโre stuck in the middle of it?โ
Damonโs smile flickered. โYou survive. And sometimes, you make the world care... just enough to get by.โ
Isaac let that settle in, the weight of his own questions starting to feel a little less heavy. He didnโt know if Damon was offering any answers, but for a brief moment, he didnโt feel so alone in this.
โJust make sure you donโt lose yourself along the way,โ Damon added, standing up. โNot everyone gets the chance to come back from that.โ
Isaac sat in silence as Damon left, the lingering words echoing in his mind. He didnโt know if Damon was trying to help him, or just speaking from his own experiences, but either way, Isaac couldnโt shake the feeling that maybe, just maybe, this guy had seen things Isaac wasnโt ready to understand.
And that terrified him.
But it also made him wonder if he might have a lot more in common with Damon Salvatore than he ever realized.

Isaac stared at his phone for a moment before finally pressing the dial button. Bonnieโs name flashed on the screen, and he felt a mix of emotions surge through him. He hadnโt talked to her much lately, not since everything had gotten so complicated. But now, he needed to hear her voice.
The phone rang a couple of times before Bonnie picked up.
"Hey," her voice was soft but tired, like sheโd been thinking about something heavy. "How are you?"
Isaac leaned back in his chair, trying to shake off the thoughts that had been running through his mind. "Iโm good. Better now that Iโm hearing your voice."
Bonnieโs voice softened, and there was a hint of a smile on the other end. "I missed you."
"Yeah, me too," Isaac muttered, wishing things were simpler, wishing he could just let go of everything for once.
There was a brief pause before Bonnie spoke again, as though trying to find the right words. "Look, I know things have been... weird between us. I just... I donโt know how to handle everything thatโs been going on. With my family. With everything."
Isaacโs heart ached hearing the vulnerability in her voice. Heโd been feeling that same weight, the same confusion. "Bonnie, itโs okay. You donโt have to explain. I get it. I do. Thereโs a lot of crazy stuff happening, and none of it makes sense."
Bonnie sighed on the other end. "Yeah, it feels like the whole worldโs turned upside down, and none of us have a clue whatโs going on."
Isaac didnโt know how to tell her everything he was learning, how to tell her about the supernatural things that were starting to feel like a permanent part of his life now. He didnโt even know if he could trust her with that. The truth about vampires, hunters, everything heโd seenโit was hard to wrap his mind around, let alone share it.
"Iโve been thinking about all of this a lot," Isaac said slowly. "About everything. And... I think maybe we donโt even know the half of it yet."
Bonnieโs voice dropped, as though she was waiting for him to say something more. "What do you mean? The half of what?"
Isaac hesitated, biting his lip. "I donโt know, Bonnie. I just feel like thereโs more to all of this. Like... thereโs stuff going on that we donโt even see, and Iโm starting to think I might be getting pulled into it."
Bonnie was quiet for a long time, and Isaac could hear her breathing softly on the other end. When she finally spoke, her words were filled with hesitation. "What if weโre not the only ones involved? What if there are thingsโthings we donโt understandโaround us? Iโve been feeling... like somethingโs off, Isaac. Like somethingโs missing. Or maybe itโs right in front of us, and we donโt see it."
Isaacโs stomach churned. He had no idea that Bonnie had been thinking the same thing, but hearing her say it made his unease grow. He swallowed hard. "Youโre saying... what? Like, you think thereโs more to all of this? More than we know?"
"Yeah," Bonnie replied, voice steady despite the uncertainty in her words. "I donโt know what it is. But something doesnโt add up. I can feel it. Itโs like... there are pieces of a puzzle, and weโre missing all the key parts."
Isaac nodded even though Bonnie couldnโt see him. "I know what you mean. Itโs like thereโs a whole side to this world that nobody talks about, and itโs just... out of reach."
Bonnie sighed again, and Isaac could almost picture her, her brow furrowed in concentration. "It feels like thereโs more... that we donโt know about the people around us. Like, they have secrets. Like... I donโt know. Itโs like everythingโs tangled up together, and weโre trying to untangle it, but weโre stuck."
Isaacโs mind raced, and for a brief moment, the truth heโd been avoiding almost slipped out. He could tell Bonnie the truthโeverything about the supernatural world, about the vampires and hunters and everything in between. But something held him back. There was so much that was still uncertain, and part of him wasnโt sure if he was ready to share it all, especially not with Bonnie. He wasnโt sure sheโd believe him, or if it would put her in danger.
"I donโt know, Bonnie," he said quietly, trying to mask the weight in his voice. "Itโs just... itโs a lot. And I donโt think weโre ready for it. Not yet."
Bonnie paused, and Isaac could hear her mulling over his words. "Maybe not. But we will be. We just need time."
Isaacโs stomach tightened, and he glanced out the window, half-expecting to see something strange lurking outside. "Yeah, maybe. But sometimes, I think the more we dig, the more we find out, the worse it gets."
Bonnieโs voice softened, as if she was trying to reassure him. "Weโll figure it out. Together."
Isaac smiled faintly, though it didnโt quite reach his eyes. "Yeah. Together."
Both of them knew there were things they werenโt saying, things they couldnโt sayโnot yet. But somehow, they both sensed that the truth, the real truth, was much darker than either of them could ever have imagined.
And it was coming for them.
