As I carefully walked through the empty corridors of the school leading to the dungeon where my house was, I remembered sudden glimpses of memories of me and Draco sneaking out in the middle of the night trying to avoid Filch. A small smile appeared on my lips at the memory of almost being caught by him once. These memories were worth remembering.
The whole year was full of fear that surrounded the walls of the castle; students and staff didn't feel safe, however, I on the other hand met someone who would change that one night in the Slytherin common room. Never did I think that Luna's advice about being positive when times were dark would help me get through the year mentally. But fortunately, I did and spent the best year at Hogwarts with the person I care for most. For the person I loved.
We had our fair share of ups and downs; however, we were always there for each other. No matter what bad events occurred happened during the day, they would be gone by the time the moon was up in the sky. Heck, even something as dark as him being a Death Eater didn't change anything we had. Although, as of now, it did cause some trouble...No matter, we'd figure everything out and make most of the night like we always did, wouldn't we?
When I got to the door of the Slytherin I stopped to admire the entrance door. Why was it always that my house would be presented in the worst light? Why was it that most who learned here turned out to be either miserable or hated? Why was it that most of us were looked down on by all and never trusted? I could never understand that. Why did a student from this house have to face most misfortune and terror? The serpent is prideful, yet terrified of and terrifies with that same pride it carries.
With no more hesitation in mind, I whispered the password and went into the dark common room only illuminated by its green light. And there he was, Draco Malfoy in all of his glory sitting alone on the couch. This scene was awfully familiar, but there was something off about it. Or something off about the blonde. He looked almost ill: his eyes dark yet soft, skin pale like snow, his veiny hands shaking with cold and foot tapping angrily against the hard floor. He was dressed in all black with a beautiful silver ring on the same finger he wears it on.
I sat on the couch next to him with my legs against my chest, hugging myself. I looked at the necklace he gave me and grabbed it for comfort, examining the small scratches on it that I had never really paid any attention to. I looked toward the clock hanging above the fireplace seeing that it was already 20 minutes past the time we had agreed on meeting. Seemed as though time didn't want us to sit in silence long.
"Did you curse me yesterday?" I asked monotonously not taking my eyes off the clock.
"I did," Draco answered coldly with a mild tone of shame in his voice.
"Why?" I questioned and snapped back to look at him, "How did that awful idea cross your mind?"
Draco shifted uncomfortably in his place then took a look at me. From what his face suggested, he was sorry about it, I knew. But I wondered why.
"Thought you would hate me for it," Draco answered still not looking at me, "You would forget and leave all of this behind."
"Why would you want me to hate you though?" I asked raising my voice a little.
"Why? Well, I don't want you to suffer," Draco answered nonchalantly.
"As if I wouldn't suffer when you'd actually kill somebody," I said harshly, "Look at me when we talk."
Draco shot his attention directly to me as I said that.
"Why would you call me out here anyway? Isn't it contradicting what you are trying to do here? Make me want to hate you?" I started to get angry, "I'd put you first on the list of people I hate if you didn't say something before you left. But now, you choose to do this all of a sudden?"
Draco stayed silent. He didn't have anything to say because he knew whatever he was saying was just a bluff and plain stupid. This made me angrier because he wouldn't speak up.
"Draco, in all honesty, the last thing I want is to hate you. Would I throw you out of the astronomy tower right now for acting so hypocritical? Yes, would do it hands down," I half shouted, "I wouldn't hate you because it's impossible to do it, for the love of Merlin!"
At this sentence, Draco snapped back.
"Why is it suddenly impossible for you damn it? Weren't you the one who hated my guts in the beginning of the year?" Draco responded harshly with the same tone, "I don't understand why in their right mind would anyone trust someone as awful as I am? Moreover, laugh and spend time with them?"
"You are not awful, Draco," I answered trying to calm myself. However, it couldn't be said for Draco. He was starting to fume with anger as if he was about to throw all of the pressure, he had bottled up onto me.
"Then what am I, Y/N? I am the person you should trust the least in school. I was chosen by the Dark Lord to do something and I will do it. Because it is my duty, I was finally chosen for something that I have to in order to prove myself worthy. This is my moment, however, is it worth anything if it makes me a horrible person?" Draco shouted with a quivering voice.
"For God's sake, would you drop your ego for a second and just understand that you are not what you think you are? You are not a cold-blooded killer or even close to being one," I snapped shouting back, "Snape is right and you have to accept it. The only thing you are is a boy who is terrified of himself. Let's face it, you can never live up to Voldemort's expectations, that's for sure. You are someone who is able to smile and be happy when you are around people you care for. You were willing to protect me knowing full well that if Voldemort found out I'd be as good as dead. You are sympathetic toward those who you unwillingly had to hurt and control. You are nothing like those crazy Death Eaters. To actually say that you will drench your own hands in blood is a bloody lie and comfort to none other than you!"
"Why do you care!?" Draco shouted standing up with his arms up, "I'm pathetic."
"Why do I care!? I bloody am in love with you, you ferret!" I shouted back and stood up.
Silence fell between us. Draco's angered facial expression turned into a scared one. He looked as if I had said something I shouldn't have said. His melancholic eyes which were empty before were now filled with light and warmness. Suddenly, I saw a single tear drop down his cheek. He sighed heavily and sat back down throwing his head back with his hand covering his eyes.
"You dimwit, I think I am in love with you too," Draco said chuckling.
I sighed and fell back onto the couch.
"So, what now?" I asked whispering.
"I don't know," he answered quivering, "I still have to kill him."
I looked at the clock which had just struck 10. We only had 2 hours left. Only 2 hours before he had to leave because there was no choice. There was no turning back, was there? Unless...
"Draco," I started, "Is there any way you won't kill him?"
"Yeah, there is," Draco answered, "But Snape will do it instead, so what's the point? He will die anyway."
"Could you please, just this once, help me sleep?" I asked looking at him to which he nodded.
"Then I ask of you to promise me not to kill Dumbledore and leave it to Snape," I said turning to look at the green flames. This time, the flames were moving slower. "Help me sleep knowing that you aren't a murderer."
Minutes passed as I felt myself slowly drifting to sleep. It didn't feel real to me at all, you know, saying goodbye so soon after knowing we love each other. But it couldn't be helped. Maybe in the next lifetime, we'd be able to wake up the next morning and never think about this again. However, we could only dream.
Memories of me and Draco from this whole year flashed before my eyes. It's funny how a silly encounter one night in this same common room could lead us to where we were. Weirdly enough, I was grateful to him. And so, I felt a single cold tear roll down my cheek too.
"I won't kill him," Draco whispered to himself and looked back to see me sound asleep.
Draco chuckled to himself. He took one last glance at her and looked at the clock. It was almost 12, so he had to hurry. Draco took out his wand and ready to storm out of the common room he suddenly turned around to face her again. He kneeled down leaning toward her swiping the single tear off her face gently. And so, without hesitance, he finally kissed her. Draco smiled one last time admiring her beautiful face and stood up to go to the door.
"Sweet dreams," he said and left.
