"Hayoon, you know, you should be resting, right?" I said gently, breaking the silence.
She turned around, her eyes wide with surprise and a hint of annoyance. "What are you doing here, Sunghoon?"
I took a deep breath, knowing I needed to choose my words carefully. "Look, I am sorry for what I said earlier."
Her eyes hardened. "I don't care. Why are you here and how did you know I am here?"
"Someone called and said that you fainted. I was worried so, I-"
"You were worried?" she interrupted, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I thought you were cold-hearted. You don't feel any emotions, right?"
I tried to explain myself, but she kept cutting me off, her words sharp and relentless. Frustration bubbled up inside me, and I decided to take a bold step. Wrapping my arm around her waist, I pulled her close, our faces mere inches apart. It worked. She was so surprised that she couldn't utter another word.
Realizing my plan had worked, I slowly let go of her. She just stood there, silent, her face slowly turning a delightful shade of red. I couldn't help but smile at how adorable she looked.
I then sat on the edge of the bed, patting the spot next to me. "Come here."
She shook her head stubbornly, but I wasn't about to give up. I reached out, holding her hand and gently pulling her closer. Once again, she was taken aback by my actions.
Intertwining our fingers, I looked into her eyes. "Wh-what are you doing?" she stammered.
"Since you saved my number as 'my love,' the hospital thinks I am your boyfriend."
Her eyes widened in shock. "You could have denied it."
"But I liked it," I admitted, leaning in to kiss her cheek softly. She froze, her cheeks burning even brighter.
Smiling, I moved a stray strand of hair away from her face. "You are pretty..."
"Thanks," she mumbled, her voice barely above a whisper.
"...stupid," I finished with a grin.
She glared at me, pushing me away. "Get out."
I laughed, her reaction too cute to take seriously. "Listen-"
"No. I don't want to talk to you," she said, looking away stubbornly.
I sat in front of her, refusing to give up. "Look here."
"No."
"Hayoon."
"No."
"If you love me then look at me," I said, my voice softening.
She was caught off guard, her eyes darting to mine. "You can't do that!" she exclaimed.
I just smiled, watching as she quickly realized what she had done and looked away again.
"There is no point in looking away. You love me, right?"
"No," she muttered.
"But earlier you said you love me."
"I-I..."
"I what? Huh?" I teased, enjoying the way she was struggling with her emotions.
She looked at me, clearly annoyed. "If you continue to annoy me, I'll... I'll kiss you."
I smirked, leaning in closer. "Oh, really?"
She nodded, her resolve wavering.
"I should annoy you more then," I said, moving even closer.
Just then, a nurse entered the room, breaking the tension. I stood up, still smiling, knowing that despite her protests, Hayoon's feelings for me were becoming clearer by the minute.
The nurse assured me that Hayoon would be fine, so after she checked out, I dropped her off at her house. It was a quiet drive, the kind where words felt unnecessary, and I found myself glancing at her, hoping she was okay.
The next day, I went to school, as usual. The familiar routine offered a sense of normalcy. I was at my locker, organizing my books, when Hayoon appeared beside me, her presence like a gentle breeze.
"Hi!" she greeted me with a radiant smile, one that could brighten the gloomiest of days.
I turned to her, my voice colder than I intended. "What happened?"
She seemed taken aback, trying to mask her annoyance. "You- whatever," she muttered, her frustration barely contained. I failed to understand her irritation.
"What's your class?" she asked, her tone softer now.
"Why do you want to know?" I replied, my walls firmly in place.
"So that we can walk together," she explained, her voice laced with an endearing sincerity.
"And why would we want that?" I questioned, oblivious to the affection behind her request.
"Are you for real? You can't change, can you?" she retorted, her patience wearing thin. She turned and walked away angrily, leaving a cold void where her warmth had been.
I shrugged it off at first, but then the realization hit me. "Waitโoh shit." My heart pounded as I watched her retreating figure. I couldn't let her go like this. I ran after her, the urgency of my feelings propelling me forward.
I reached the classroom and saw her sitting there, her earphones in, blocking out the world. I slipped into the seat next to her, my heart in my throat. "Hayoon."
She looked at me, her eyes a mix of hurt and defiance.
"I am sorry," I said, my voice barely a whisper.
"No," she replied, turning away from me.
"Hayoon, I am seriously sorry. Forgive me. I promise I won't do it again." My words tumbled out in a rush, desperate to make things right. But she wasn't listening.
Class started, and I nudged her gently. "Hayoon."
"What now?" she asked, not looking up from her notes.
"I am sorry," I repeated, hoping she would believe me.
"Focus in class," she said, her voice firm.
"Forgive me first," I insisted, our bickering drawing the attention of the teacher.
Ms. Moon turned around, her eyes narrowing. "Who is talking? Sunghoon?"
"Y-yes, miss?" I stammered.
"Since when did you become this talkative?" she asked, clearly surprised. Before I could respond, she instructed me to leave the class.
I sighed, standing up. As I walked out, I glanced back at Hayoon, silently pleading for her forgiveness. The door closed behind me, but my thoughts remained with her. I knew I had to find a way to make things right
HAYOON P.O.V
The classroom felt stuffy, the chatter of my classmates a distant hum as my mind wandered. My eyes, as if drawn by an invisible string, found their way to the window. There he was, Sunghoon, standing outside, lost in his own world. My heart did a little flip.
At first, he seemed oblivious to my gaze, his attention elsewhere. But then, almost as if he felt my eyes on him, he turned. Our eyes met, and a spark of something electric passed between us. I felt a rush of heat rise to my cheeks and quickly looked away, my heart pounding in my chest.
Curiosity got the better of me, and I stole another glance his way. This time, he was smiling, a warm, playful smile that made my heart flutter even more.
"Hayoon, could you please read the last paragraph?" Ms. Moon's voice jolted me back to reality. I blinked, trying to gather my thoughts, and nodded. Standing up with my book in hand, I could feel the eyes of the entire class on me.
As I started to read, my eyes betrayed me once more, drifting back to the window. Sunghoon was still watching me, and then, with a cheeky grin, he blew me a flying kiss. My heart skipped a beat, and in my shock, I fumbled the book, sending it crashing to the floor.
Gasps filled the room. Ms. Moon's eyes widened in concern. "Hayoon, is everything alright?"
I quickly nodded, my face burning with embarrassment. "Y-Yes," I stammered.
"Alright. Please sit down," she said, her tone gentle but firm.
I sank back into my seat, my heart racing. Ms. Moon continued her lesson, but my mind was elsewhere. I risked another glance at Sunghoon, and there it was againโanother flying kiss. I quickly turned away, hiding my face behind a curtain of hair, feeling my cheeks grow even hotter.
As soon as the class ended, I hurried outside, hoping to catch my breath. To my surprise, Sunghoon was still there, leaning casually against the wall. I mustered the courage to speak. "Enjoyed standing outside?" I asked, trying to sound nonchalant.
He nodded, a mischievous glint in his eyes. We started walking together, heading to our next class. The silence between us was comfortable, but I couldn't let go of what had happened earlier.
"A-also... What were you doing earlier?" I blurted out, my voice barely above a whisper.
Sunghoon looked at me, feigning innocence. "What?"
"You know..." I said, feeling a blush creep up my neck.
He chuckled softly. "Oh, this?" He leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss to my cheek. My breath caught in my throat.
I stared at him, my mind reeling. He grinned, that same playful smile that always made my heart skip. "I did it twice, right? Here you go," he said, kissing my other cheek and then smiling brightly.
I stood there, utterly stunned, my heart racing faster than ever. Was this really the same Sunghoon? The Sunghoon who was always so composed, so cool? My thoughts were a whirlwind.
The next day, as I opened my locker, my heart skipped a beat. A burst of vibrant colors greeted me, and nestled among the books and school supplies were a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates.
I was so surprised. My hands trembled as I reached for a note tucked delicately between the stems of the flowers. My breath caught as I read the familiar handwriting.
It was from Sunghoon.
"It's surprising, isn't it? I never expected myself to do something like this either, but love makes you do unexpected things. I am not good at these things, but I am going to try my best to gain your trust and take care of you. I will try my hardest to love you more than you love me."
A smile spread across my face, warmth blooming in my chest. With a giddy heart, I asked one of the students if he had seen Sunghoon.
"He's on the rooftop," he replied.
Excitement and nerves fluttered in my stomach as I made my way to the rooftop. Pushing open the door, I saw him sitting there, earphones on, completely lost in his own world.
I quietly approached him from behind and wrapped my arms around him in a gentle hug. He jumped slightly and took off his earphones, turning to look at me with wide eyes.
"What happened?" he asked, confusion and a hint of worry in his voice.
I couldn't help but smile at his expression. "Nothing," I said, sitting down beside him.
"Why did you hug me then?" he pressed, his cheeks tinged with a soft pink.
"Why? You didn't like it?" I teased.
"N-no... I didn't mean that," he stammered, looking away.
I chuckled softly. "What are you listening to?"
"Music," he replied simply.
"I want to listen too."
He handed me one of his earphones without hesitation. As the music filled my ears, I realized it was a cute and romantic song. The lyrics made me smile, and I glanced at Sunghoon, who was also smiling.
Slowly, I inched closer to him. He noticed and gave me a curious look. "Why are you acting weird?"
"I am not acting weird," I insisted, linking my arm with his.
He laughed, a sound that made my heart flutter. He then rested his head on my shoulder, and I felt a surge of affection for him.
"Sunghoon..." I murmured.
"Hmm?" His eyes were closed, and he looked so peaceful.
"Thank you for the gift."
He smiled a little, still not opening his eyes. "So, that's why you are acting like this. Did you like it?"
I nodded, feeling shy all of a sudden.
"I'll give you more gifts then," he said softly.
"No," I whispered.
"Why?"
"Because... I just want you," I confessed, my voice barely above a whisper.
He opened his eyes and looked at me, a surprised expression on his face. He then stood up abruptly. "Let's go back."
"Why didn't you reply to what I said?" I asked, pouting slightly.
"What did you say?" he asked, feigning ignorance.
"You want to hear it again..." I teased.
"It's not that. I just didn't hear you earlier," he said, looking a bit embarrassed.
"Oh, okay. Well, I said that I don't want gifts because..."
"Because?" he prompted.
"Because I only want you."
After I said that, he looked away, smiling. "Okay," he whispered.
He started to walk away, but I quickly stopped him. "Sunghoon."
"Hmm?"
"I only want you," I repeated, my voice filled with sincerity.
His smile grew, and his face turned a deeper shade of red. "Okay," he said again, clearly flustered.
I couldn't help myself and continued to say things like "I only want you," "You are my everything," "I love you," and other sweet confessions. Each time, his smile grew wider, and his face turned redder.
"Okay, enough. Stop," he finally said, taking a deep breath and touching his face. "My face is burning because of you. I can't go downstairs like this."
He quickly put on a mask and his hood, trying to hide his blushing face, and then left without saying anything else. I smiled, feeling a warmth in my chest, and followed him back to classWhen I got to class, I saw him sitting at his desk. I quietly took the seat next to him. For a while, we sat in comfortable silence. Then, to my surprise, he put his head on my shoulder.
"Hayoon..." he murmured.
"Hmm?"
"I love you," he said softly.
I was stunned. This was the first time he had said those words to me. "Huh?" I managed to say, my heart pounding in my chest.
"I love you," he repeated, a bit louder this time.
I looked away, a huge smile spreading across my face. He then kissed the side of my lips, a sweet and tender gesture. I turned to look at him as he once again rested his head on my shoulder, closing his eyes.
In that moment, I felt like the luckiest person in the world.
