Season 2, episode one

Freddie Thorne's funeral
-

Georgie was sat in the car, on the way to the grave yard. Tommy was on on her side, he was just staring forward. He had his jaw clenched, its was clear he was worked up. She took his large hand into her small hand, she rubbed her thumb against it. He turned his head towards her, the corners of his lips twitching into a small smile as he looked at her. "What's up?" She asked sweetly.

"Just, well.. I thought I'd be dead before Freddie. Me and Freddie haven't been on good terms since we got back." He faced back in the road "Well I just wish I could have made it up.." he spoke. She kissed his cheek, which is the most they had done in two years. They hadn't kissed since the wedding, never mind fucking! Her mum was asking when she'd have a grandchild for god sakes.

In the past two years, Mickey had met a girl, he married her and now she's pregnant. It wasn't fair! She'd met Karl the day he was born and now Esme and John have had a baby and she was still a virgin! 20 years old and her own husband hadn't even touched her. Her eyes rolled to the window, before noticing that they were here.

All the cars behind them came to a halt as they got out of the car. Tommy put his arm around Georgie's waist, giving it a squeeze before loosening his grip. She walked over to Ada, pulling her into a hug. She bent down and brushed a hand over his hand. Her and Ada had a small conversation before going back over to Tommy. She smiled softly as she came over, her was talking to John while Esme held the baby.

"Hello John, hi Esme." As she stood with the group. John said hello and Esme asked if she wanted to hold the baby. She happily accepted, Esme handed her the newborn. She looked down at the baby, she felt peaceful. Tommy saw this, but didn't say anything.

Before the funeral started, she handed the baby back. He was clearly hungry as he'd started to get fussy in Georgie's arms. As the funeral started Ada spoke first, the heartbreak was clear. As Ada had started to cry Polly went and got her, then Tommy went up. "I promised my friend, Freddie Thorne, that I'd say a few words over his grave if he should pass before me. I made this promise.. before he became me brother-in-law, when we were in France fighting for the king." He stopped

"Amen" Arthur said, his hands joined together.

"And in the end, it wasn't the war that took freddie, pestilence took him." Johns baby started to cry. "Freddie passed on his soul and his spirit to a new generation, before he was cruelly taken"
Everyone was silent.

As people started to walk away, Georgie went to John and esmes car. She said goodbye to them before they left, she sat in the car waiting for Tommy. He walked back to the car, clearly in distress. "What's happened?" She asked softly.
He didn't answer just turned on the car and left the cemetery. "The garrison's been blown up" he spoke as they headed to the garrison.

She just looked at him, her eyes going wide. "Somebody blew up the garrison? But who would do that?" She asked softly "I don't know Georgie, I don't fuckin' know" he sighed. She nodded, looking out the window. She arrived outside the garrison, Polly was already stood outside. She walked over to Polly with Tommy.

The 3 walked over to the copper, moss, that was stood outside the premises. He lifted the rope for the two women before Tommy went under "err it happened at exactly 7am.. nobody saw anything, err the petrols were not in the area." Moss spoke to Tommy. "Mr Shelby, have any idea who might of done it" Moss spoke again, looking at the building covered in ash and debris.

She looked at her husband, raising a brow wanting to know who had done it. "I'd say it was something to do with the gas," he handed the copper some money. She shook her head "it's just been fitted" he added. Polly walked inside the now obliterated building cover in ash and debris but something stood out coloured pieces of paper, confetti? "Er madam the structures not declared safe" Moss spoke.

She bent down, picking up one of the pieces of confetti before holding it up to show tommy. "Madam!" The copper called out. "This is all over the place?" Polly showed them. Georgie walked forward to get a better look, "confetti? And prams as well?" She looked bewildered. Polly walked past handing Tommy the small green paper. He looked at the copper, who happened to still be there, "you can go" the copper walked off after Tommy spoke. It started to rain, she walked over to them. "Who?" Polly questioned. She walked beside him "who did this to us?" The sky thundered.

-

She decided to go home with Polly seen as Tommy wanted to go for a drink at another bar by himself. She went into the betting shop, over the last year Georgie had begged for a job in the company which he willingly gave her. Unfortunately it was in Shelby company limited office and currently they were at the betting shop. She worked as polly's assistant. It wasn't too hard, mainly because Polly was company treasurer and secondly because Polly didn't work everyday like Thomas. All Georgie had to do was update the money coming in, the money Shelby company limited had and she was to advise her if she thought they were spending too much money.

Usually she also had to tell Polly how much money they were making a month and which months were lower which were usually months after Christmas and before Christmas. She only ever had to advise Polly to limit the money spent last year in February because they hadn't made a lot of money in January.

The betting shop was busy, men shouting and all sorts. Polly had gone to help someone new, help them get sorted. John came up to Georgie who was sat in a chair "Georgie!" She looked up, smiling when she saw John "did he say who's done it?" He questioned walking over to her. "Your brothers at the black lion" she said getting up from her chair.

"On his own?" John questioned again, Georgie groaned. "Yes John on his own, the same way he does everything!" She said back. She walked over and out the betting den, John followed the dark haired girl. "Should I go there?" He said quietly, the noise of the betting den overpowering his voice. "What?" She turned around, walking backwards with ease. "Should I go there and see him?" John questioned her, she turned back round shaking her head. She walked to the kitchen before he asked his next question.

"Where the fuck is Arthur?" He asked his next question. She groaned as he walked in the same room as her, she closed the doors of the betting shop behind him. "How should I know? Am I his mother?" She shook her head. She reached up to the cabinet, getting a mug "Polly told me he's protecting the garrisons whiskey from the coppers." She said turning back round to him "would you like a cup of tea" he shook his head, she turned back round placing a tea bag in her mug.

"Georgie it feels like things are getting out of hand" she filled a pot with water before putting it on the cooker to boil. "So get them in hand?" she said, hoping up on the counter. Over the past 2 years, John and Georgie had become close friends, they were like siblings. She confided in John and he did the same. "You know what Ada said to me this morning" he spoke as she lit a cigarette, raising her brow "she said we all look like we work in a factory.. under the ground. Said we look like ghosts" she shook head

"She'll be back, before we know it" she spoke, dangling her legs backwards and forwards on the counter. "When?" She hopped down off the side to pour the water in the mug "when she misses or needs us" she spoke. John just stood there, before going to speak again. "And anyway, who the fuck would blow up our pub?" She groaned loud enough so he could hear "six!" She said, putting the pot in the cupboard. "Six what?" She puffed on her cigarette " six questions since you walked through the door!" She said, clearly irritated.

"Soon you're going to have to start being the man with the answers!" She spoke sternly to him.

"Why" he asked, stupidly.
"Seven" she spoke, sitting down with her cup of tea. She sighed "because when London happens, you'll have to hold up your end.. or they'll find someone who can." She looked back at him, he didn't say anything.

"Now, how's the baby?" She asked, he looked at her. "Fine. No different than before." She nodded. "How's Esme" she asked "you literally saw her today?" He chuckled, she looked back at him before laughing. "Just trying to make small talk!" She spoke, chuckling softly.

-

Georgies eyes follow the small brunette boy passing backwards and forwards across the room, "sit down Finn" Arthur calls, looking up from his hands. The same hands he's been looking at for the past 5 minutes. Esme is sat on the stairs, across from Georgie who is sat on a wooden stool at the table. Polly is looking out the window and John is lent against a wall near Polly. The room is quiet, nobody is talking. John ends the silence "where the hell is Tom.." when he is cut off by Polly who is looking for Tommys car to pull up "He's on his way".

Arthur squeezes his hand "Right then, while we're waiting patiently.." he lifts up the crate of whiskey, groaning as he does so "whiskey, left over from the explosion" Charlie and John get a glass while the rest stay back. Georgie isn't a fan of whiskey but seen as it's a key factor of Tommys diet, she has gotten used to it. She prefers gin usually, she only drinks whiskey to get black out drunk. Charlie pours one for curly and himself.

"Right before Tommy gets here, I think there's a few things we need to get straight." John says
"You think?" Polly quickly questions him, Georgie groans as her head starts to throb. She looks back at the two and then at the whiskey. She gets herself a glass, downing it before pouring herself another to hopefully drown out the noise. "Yeah" John nods to poll's question. "Yeah I do, I want to know when did we all take a vote on this expansion south?" He says pointing his finger round in a circle.

Polly walks forward, "you have anything to say, you wait for Thomas." Georgie slowly sips on her whiskey, waiting for an argument to unfold.

"Polly's fucking right" Arthur adds.

"You know I see all the books. You know, legal and off-track... some stuff you don't see and in the past year the Shelby company limited has been making one hundred and fifty pounds a day! Right a fuckin day! Some times more so what I wanna know is why are we changing things, Polly. Look what's happened already, we haven't stepped foot in London and they've already blown up our fuckin' pub!" John spoke.

"Who said anything about cockneys?" Arthur spoke back. Esme spoke up "who else?" Georgie's eyes darted toward her as Polly spoke up "do you know who did it?" Georgie chugged her whiskey, getting her third glass. "No, she doesn't know who did it" Polly turned as Thomas walked in.
"I'm told only family are aloud to speak" Esme looked back at her book, surely not? "Everyone's aloud to speak, on your feet Esme. Let's see what you have to say" She looked at John for permission? "I speak for our household." John stood proudly.

"John, this company is a modern enterprise and believes for equal rights for women. On your feet Esme." Tommy spoke, Georgie drank the rest of her glass before getting her fourth or fifth glass.

Her eyes glanced towards Tommy as he lit a cigarette. She leaned forward as Esme started "I'm not a blood member of this family, but perhaps indeed because I'm not I can see things from a different light, so I'll get to my point" she looked round "That would be nice." Polly muttered. "As my husband said, Shelby company limited is now very successful.. but london. I have kin In Shepherd's Bush and portobello. It's more like wars between armies down there. And the coppers fight side-by-side with them. There are foreigners or every description..and the use of bombs is the least of it. I have a child, blessed with the Shelby family good looks. I want John to see him grow up. I want us to someday live somewhere with fresh air and trees and keep chickens or something. But London is just smoke and trouble, Thomas."

"Thomas?" Polly raised her brow at the dark haired woman infront of her. Esme looked at her
"That's all I have to say." She sat down. At this point, Georgie had drank that drink and was now poring herself another, Arthur then takes the bottle and pours another one, presumably for Tommy. "That was a lot of words, a lot of words. Was them down with a nice drink" Arthur pushed the glass to Georgie, who know questioned if she could stand up to give tommy the drink. She stood up, wobbled a bit before walking straight to Thomas. Handing him his drink before wobbling to give him a kiss on the cheek. He took a sip before speaking.

"Firstly, the bang in the pub was nothing to do with London. Understood? The bang is something I'm dealing with on my own. Secondly, we've nothing to fear from the proposed business expansion so long as we stick together. And after the first few weeks, nine tenths of what we do in London will be legal. The other tenth is in good hands, isn't that right Arthur?" The room was quiet as he spoke. Arthur then added "That's right" and Georgie felt an arm round her waist, and the heat of being drunk rose to her cheeks.

"Now some of you in this room have expressed there reservations. Fair enough. Any of you who want no part in the future of this company, walk out the door..right now. Go raise your chickens. For those of you with ambition..expansion process starts tomorrow." He finished, Georgie looked at him as his arm left her waist and he walked towards the table. He looked back at her "Go take a seat sweetheart, I've just got to do something and then we'll go home, yeah?" He spoke. She nodded, drunkenly smirking.

She sat down on a chair as John and Esme left, then Arthur and then Charlie and curly. Polly had gone somewhere else with Tommy, she stood up sneakily and went over to the bottles of whiskey Arthur had left on the table and getting one. She opened it and took a sip. She took a massive drink, the whiskey stung the back of her throat. She hummed to herself a song she had heard at a restaurant tommy had taken her to. She took another big sip, one third of the bottle was gone.

Tommy came back, it was clear that he was irritated. He walked over helping her to her feet "Come on sweetheart, you're off home." She came to her feet. He helped her get her coat on which happened to be the fur coat he had purchased from Paris for there 1 year anniversary. They walked along the cold street of watery lane to there house. He helped her inside and onto the sofa. "I've got to do some work but I'll be coming home late so you get yourself to bed." She nodded, the bottle of whiskey still in her hand then he walked out the door into the misty darkness.

She stood up, locking the door. She walked back to the sofa, slumping into the cushions. She sighed, he would be home at two most likely. She took a drink of her whiskey. She couldn't help but feel abit sad, she didn't want to go to bed by herself, she wanted comfort. She just wanted to feel loved, to feel special. She was always overshadowed by Grace. She was one woman, two fucking years ago! She chugged the rest of the whiskey before walking to her front door and throwing it on the floor.

She stood there, storming inside to get herself one of Thomas' bottles of whiskey. She then walked back outside, barefoot as the shards sunk into the soles of her feet. She couldn't feel anything, her eyes just watering as she lit another cigarette and took a swig of the large bottle she held in her hand. When you were as unaware as she was, neither you would notice that it was currently quarter to two. She was nearing the end of her whiskey and cigarettes. She saw the lights of Tommys car pull up, he rushed out of the car.
"Fuck are you doing?" He walked up too her, she stared forward. She finally finished her cigarette, in the time she was out here she had picked all the pieces of glass out of her feet but the blood was still there. He tried to help her up but she pushed him off.

"Who have you fucked?" She questioned, noting the scent of perfume on him "what?" She chuckled before throwing the bottle away. "It smells cheap, you would rather fuck some cheap white than your own wife" he was baffled. "Your jealous aren't you" he stood still before following her. "I am not jealous of Lizzie!"She knew he had fucked her. "What, so you just want me to fuck you? This is what this is all about?" She groaned storming upstairs, the blue eyed man was quick to follow. "I'm a virgin! You know how embarrassing it is when your mother's asking for another grandchild but your husband won't even touch you!"

She took off her clothes before putting a nightgown on. He stood behind her as his arms snaked around her waist, "I'm sorry sweetheart, I just thought you were still young is all." He peppered kisses up and down her neck. "How about I make it up to you when I come back from London?" He turned her around, she smiled softly before nodding. "Yes please. That would be nice" he smiled at her. "And when we're big in London, I'll buy a house I've wanted since I was 16. I would always imagine my wife and children in the house, that will be you" he pulled her in for a kiss. She got into bed and placed her head on his chest as she drifted to sleep, dreaming about the mystery house.
