+ Nikolai is observant, and he can easily sense how stressed they are by their mannerisms alone. They're tense in their body. Holding their head in their hands as they try to work. Getting agitated with little things. Neglecting some personal needs to try and finish their work. It makes Nikolai upset to see them so overwhelmed.

+ He'll subtly try and coax them away from their work, in a way that won't let them know, that he knows, that they're stressed. Nikolai might suggest going for a walk, or if not, just sitting outside together for a little while might take some weight of their shoulders.

+ He can't help but linger around them as he's growing more worried, especially if they begin distancing themselves for extensive periods of time. He brings them food every so often if they insist that they carry on working and he will make sure they're hydrated, but before he leaves them, he kisses their cheek and rubs the shoulders comfortingly.

+ If he manages to coax them away from working, he'll glady spend the day lazing about if they so please. Nikolai will lie in bed and cuddle with them, and he may even encourage them to take a nap to properly allow themselves some rest. Or if they just want to rant about what's stressing them, then Nikolai listens intently and comforts them with kisses.

+ They're his dearest. He'll do everything in his power to prevent seeing them from being so stressed. He'll even offer to do the work for them or sit beside them and help them out; he'll surely try to at least. He reminds them that their mental health is much more important than work, despite what they may contradict. If they're really stubborn about taking a break, he'll resort to wrapping them in a blanket unexpectedly, picking them up, and whisking them away from anything that reminds them of what they're stressing over for a while.
