ALICENT SCOWLED at Rhaenyra's answers, if Rhaenyra was on a walk, where could Laenor be?
"entertaining his young squires, I would venture." commented the Queen with ill malice about Laenor's true nature.
And yes, many nights Laenor would venture out with his squires, but this night was not of them. this night he focused on mourning his sister.
Criston Cole snickered at the Queen's comment, ever the loyal soldier.
"Aemond..." Viserys pleaded in a small gasp, "look at me." it was strange for the boy, Viserys never paid much attention to him or his siblings. the apple of Viserys eyes were Rhaenyra and rarely Visenya, whom he'd ask to pay him company and read.
"your King demands an answer, who spoke these lies to you?"
Aemond's eye traveled to Visenya, who gave him a stern look that translated intoโI will kill you if you blame mother. the truth was at the tip of his tongue as his good eye froze on his mother who seemed to be prepared for the honest truths that would leave his mouth. noticing this, the room's attention moved to Alicent in suspense.
Aemond looked down, a sign of his dishonesty that Visenya had rapidly taken notice of years ago, "it was Aegon." the wounded boy gulped.
better a blow from Aegon than Visenya's rage.
"me?" Aegon widened his eyes at the mention of his name. He'd called the prince's bastards on multiple occasion, but he also shared a friendship with Jace, though he mainly led the older brown-haired prince around for his pranks.
"and you, boy?" click, clack, click, clack was the sound of Viserys cane against the marble of the castle's floor as he approached Aegon, anger seeping through his tone.
"where did you hear such calumnies?" Viserys elder son did not answer as he eyed Aemond.
"Aegon! tell me the truth of it!" Viserys' voice boomed against the room, causing Visenya to grit her teeth at the head aching sound.
Aegon licked his lip nervously, "We know, Father. Everyone knows. Just...look at them." eyes followed Rhaenyra and her sons, the mother holding both the proof of her sins closer as though she could veil them from the judging and pitiful eyes.
"this interminable infighting must cease!" Viserys ordered with a bang of his cane, making Aegon jump.
Viserys looked at his third daughter, and his eldest grandsonโproclaimed rivals since the moment of their birth, always teasing and cursing at one another until separated; and to think the notion of having them betrothed crossed his and Rhaenyra's minds.
but if perhaps the divided Targaryens could live in harmony for once...
"all of you! we are family! now make your apologies and show good will to one another. your father, your grandsire, your king demands it!" Viserys screamed with another bang of his cane. Visenya nearly scoffed, refusing to see reasoning.
Alicent's eyes traveled to the wound on her sister's face, on the swelling where Aemond's beautiful eye were to be. "that is insufficient." The Queen said as a knot began to form on her throat, "Aemond has been damaged permanently, My King. Your daughter might suffer in the future for the damage done to her head as well as the scar. Good will cannot make them whole!"
"I know, Alicent, but I cannot restore his eye or her injury." Viserys said regrettably.
"there's a debt to be paid!" The Queen announced, focusing more on Aemond's injury as it was caused by her enemy's bastard. "I should have one of her son's eye in return." the sounds of gasps were like a death-rattle in that room. Rhaenyra clutched her sons tighter against her as people looked at her with widened eyes, some moving closer to protect her.
Visenya had never seen her mother so blinded by rage, so bloodthirstyโand it made her wonder if her secret vices indeed came from the Hightower Queen.
She hated Rhaenyra son's, that was a fact. In fact, she hated bastards because they went against The Faith, a nature they did not choose to be sired in, but still a sin.
yet, regardless of her hatred she did not wish to see Jacaerys or Lucerys have one of their eyes taken.
The Princess eyes glanced at Jacaerys, whose blood ran cold. Lucerys' hand holding his mother tightly as he kept his childish whimpers to himself.
Jacaerys glanced backโhoping Visenya would interrupt, she was the apple of her mother's eyes. The favorite daughter, the flawless princess, if she were to speak with her mother then he believed Alicent would heed her influence and wishes.
But Visenya scowled, remembering Aemond's previous words. Bastard Lover. How could he when her hatred was so blatantly demonstrated? how they'd mock the bastards in The Keep when hidden away?
and for that small fraction of a second that Visenya's eyes wondered elsewhere, screams erupted the Driftmark Great Hall.
"Alicent stay with the King!" they'd scream but her mother moved to fast as she was guided by her rage.
she moved towards Rhaenyra with The Conqueror's Blade up in the air.
"Hold your ground!"
Rhaenyra turned at the rapid commotion, her rapid thinking causing her to hold off Alicent as the latter pointed the dagger at her. A scream eruptedโLucery's scream as he saw his mother being the target of an unexpected attack. Visenya felt dizzy upon the commotion, but she maintained fierce.
The people moved closer, bodies dancing against eachother in the middle of chaos.
The third princess had gotten out of her seat, she saw Baela Targaryen through her peripheral and she understood her mother's rage. she wished for a knife then and there, she wished Rhaenys Targaryen hadn't been behind her all along. Baela Targaryen was a name she'd whisper every night. Baela Targaryen ruined her face, ruined her mind, ruined her imageโthe sole thing she was taught to prioritize.
Visenya had no dragons, Visenya was a third daughter with no claims to anything. All she could do was save face and be taught the way of The Faith as all of Westeros. All she could do was play this game, alone. she was not be a pawn in someone's game, she was not to be the scapegoat or the victim.
She'd have to learn how to keep her webs nice and neat, weaving through all of Westeros through pretty smiles and gentleness as she grew, she'd have the Great Houses eating at the palm of her hand without noticing it.
And she'd have her revenge on those who ruined her.
