I stare out the window of the dining hall, frowning at the cloudy weather that's been souring everyone's mood all morning. A light rain had begun when I woke up, which was a complete contrast to the beautiful weather we had the day before. I swirl my spoon around in my cereal bowl, resting my other hand under my chin.
Most of the kids stayed in their cabins, not big fans of the rain. Only a couple of them were here having breakfast with the counselors.
"This sucks," Taylor complains, laying her head on the table.
Tyler pats her shoulder, "Tell me about it."
Devon walks over with a tray of hot chocolate mugs and sets them down, "A little rain won't hurt anyone. At least we can stop worrying about sweating our asses off for a day."
Maya chuckles at that, taking a mug off the tray, "Cheers to that."
I hadn't realized my focus was still on the window until a tap on my arm brings me back to the conversation. Devon took the empty spot beside me and was now looking at me a little worriedly.
"Is the rain ruining your mood that badly?" He tries to lighten my somberness with a tease, but when it doesn't land, he gets more serious, "C'mon, Y/N, what's going on?"
I won't lie and say that the rain wasn't the only thing bringing me down. Aiden has been cooped up in the boys' cabin all morning, and I haven't seen him since yesterday afternoon. I've been restlessly thinking about him, pondering what I could do to help him out.
"It's nothing, really..." I say as I push my untouched cereal aside.
THUN!
We all flinch when the loud clap of thunder sounds outside. Maya points her now-empty mug up as she comments, "Even the universe knows you're lying."
Everyone's attention was on me, and I had no clue they were so invested in what was happening in my life. Tyler slides my bowl back to me, "Pout all you want for all I care, but you still have to eat."
I stare at the bowl but then look at Tyler and Devon, "Is Aiden okay?"
Devon's mouth makes an 'o' shape when he finally understands, "Oh, I see. You're worried about him?"
"He's just been in bed all morning. Why are you asking?" Tyler says calmly.
Maya raises a brow and nudges his shoulder, "What do you mean why? Can't you tell he's been acting strange?"
"Strange how? He stops yapping for a couple of hours and suddenly something's wrong with him?"
"Tyler!"
"What, Maya? The guy seems fine to me. Maybe he just needed some extra sleep."
"You are so oblivious sometimes..." She rolls her eyes and turns away from him.
The tension between them is blatantly clear but no one says anything about it, rather feeling awkward now. She reaches her hand across the table to rest over mine.
"Come find me if you need to talk to someone, alright?" She narrows her eyes when she glances at Tyler, "I don't want to be here right now."
Maya stands up and walks out of the dining hall, likely going to join Ashlyn back at our cabin. Once she's out of sight, Devon rises from his seat and smacks Tyler in the head.
"Ow! What the hell, man?!" He rubs the top of his head with an irritated face.
"Don't be a fucking dumbass." He scolds him, triggering a back-and-forth argument between the two.
Seeing as no one was hovering over me anymore, I found this as my cue to leave. When I stand up, Taylor lifts her head, "Where are you going?"
"I don't know..."
"Talk to him." She suggests, throwing me off guard.
I shake my head, glancing out at the open doors leading out into the harsh rain, "I don't think he wants to talk to anyone."
"Maybe not...But if it's you..." She stares at me expectantly.
I bite my lip in deep thought. I want to talk to him, see what's wrong. But what ifโ
"Go." She urges me, pushing me away from the table.
"Okay, okay!" I raise my arms in surrender and retreat to the doors. But I begin to have second thoughts and turn around, "What if he doesn't want to see meโ"
"Y/N!"
"Going!"
