"Could it be a confession?" Chigiri asked, towering over me as we stared at the handwritten letter in my hands.

"I'm not known enough to receive such things. You think too highly of me, Chigiri." I rejected that idea of his.

When I opened my locker earlier, an envelope slipped out of it. I assumed it was mistakingly placed inside of my locker, but that couldn't be since it had my name written as the receiver.

"Well, I don't know. I don't think someone having a crush on you is unlikely." he shrugged, taking his seat in front of me.

He flipped his chair to face me, plopping himself down before snatching the letter in my hands.

He squinted his eyes at the letter, as if he was trying to decipher the intentions of the person who wrote it. When he couldn't figure it out, he placed it back down on the table.

"So...are you going?" he inquired, resting his chin on the palm of his hand.

"I mean, it's not like it's a love letter. Maybe they just want to meet behind the school to discuss private matters." I brushed off whatever idea he had.

"Yeah, but what if?" he sighed, not convinced.

"Then I'll think of an answer when I get there. For now, I'm pretty sure it isn't anything of the sort." I replied, neatly folding the letter before placing it back inside the envelope.

"You should've crumpled it up." Chigiri scoffed, looking away.

"That'd be rude." I retorted, slipping the envelope in my school bag.

"So? What did you want to talk about?" the young lady asked, eyeing the two girls that stood maliciously in front of her.

The student on the left was a few steps behind the other, showing that she wasn't the one who asked to meet her. However, the student on the right had her arms crossed as she glared at the one they requested to meet, attempting to intimidate her.

"L/n." the girl on the right called out.

Y/n was a bit surprised at the sternness of her tone, but she did not dare to flinch at the use of her last name. Instead, she remained calm, unchanging, and unyielding to her attempts of intimidation.

"Do you like Chigiri?" she asked.

Out of all the statements, backlash, and questions Y/n had calculated her answer for, she did not expect to be asked about her childhood friend.

Even Chigiri, who was hiding behind a wall to spy on what he thought was a confession, was shocked when he heard their question.

"No. We're just friends." she cleared up the misunderstanding, not wanting them to assume anything about their relationship.

Additionally, even if they were in a relationship, Y/n wouldn't go around telling everyone that unless Chigiri wanted to.

Chigiri felt a deep sense of loss and sadness, as if a great hole had been carved into his heart when he heard the words "Just friends" slip out of her mouth.

(a/n : anyways y'all, go check out my book "Just friends" in the description box below!!!!)

"Are you sure? Or is that your excuse to get close to him?" the student's friend asked, taking a few steps forward to stand side-by-side with the other.

"Yes, I'm sure." she replied.

The way her face remained soft and relaxed, her eyes serene and focused, and her mouth had no sign of tension in the jaw or teeth bothered the two students.

They didn't like the way she was handling such an overwhelming situation as if it was an everyday thing for her. They wanted to see her react. They wanted to see her falter.

"You can't possibly brush off a handsome guy like him to be just a friend!" the student's friend argued.

"Very well. If you wish to jump to conclusions like this, then ask yourself if you think I even have a chance with him?" she decided to change her approach.

"Nope."

"Heck nah."

Y/n felt a little offended by the way they didn't hesitate with their comments, but she merely brushed it off as she didn't want to show a hint of hurt.

Chigiri, on the other hand, had his cheeks puffed out. For some reason, he felt insulted since he believed that his friend had a 100% chance with him.

"It's settled then." the student grabbed ahold of Y/n's hands, using her hands to clasp them together in hers.

"Since you're Chigiri's friend, you should set us up!" she gave her the fakest smile possible.

"Set you up?" Y/n repeated, labelling the girl as delusional in her head.

"That's right! Chigiri always rejects me." the student sighed, letting go of her hands.

"Set up a date for Rinka. Ask about his favorite type too." her friend prompted, assuming that Y/n was going to go along with their plans.

Chigiri couldn't help but quietly groan at the situation his friend had been forced to handle. He was used to receiving confessions directly, but to use his friend was crossing the line too far.

"I didn't agree to set you two up." Y/n spoke up, causing the two girls to look up from their phones.

"Huh?" they breathed out, thinking she was crazy.

"I won't agree to something without his permission. If you want to be with him, then do it yourself." Y/n stated before turning around.

"Also, word of adviceโ€”" she glanced over at the two of them, "It'd be best for you to prepare for rejection. You're nowhere near his type."

"Huh? What was that?!" she shouted, stepping forward in an angry manner.

Y/n walked away with her back turned, no intention of continuing a conversation that did not benefit her in any way.

The two students were demanding her to come back to settle their argument. Y/n didn't bother as she believed it was a waste of time.

"You knowโ€”" Y/n turned to her left to find a young man hiding, "You shouldn't eavesdrop on a lady's conversation, Chigiri."

"At least it wasn't a confession." Chigiri brought up the event earlier.

"It technically was...to you, at least." Y/n retorted, pointing out that it was more of an unexpected indirect confession to him.

Chigiri thought it was futile to continue since she was right.

Y/n didn't know what came over her at that time as she suddenly decided to ask why he was glad it wasn't a confession for her.

"Huh? Don't be stupid!" he randomly blurted out, not meaning for him to react that way.

"I'm not being stupid. I was just curious." Y/n simply replied.

Chigiri wasn't sure if he should answer her question as he didn't want his hidden feelings for her to be revealed yet.

He was afraid of the idea that she didn't feel the same way.

He was terrified of the idea that he'd lose someone dear to him.

He finally got closer and attained the relationship he's always wanted to have with her. But, because of the fact that they were so close now, he was afraid of what the future had in store for them.

He had come to accept that the feelings he harboured for her were like the ocean. His feelings came in waves, ebbing and flowing.

Sometimes, the water was calm; and sometimes, it was too overwhelming for him to handle.

But the only thing he can do is learn to swim if he wanted to be by her side.

And so, he gave her a small lie, saying that he did not wish for her time to be occupied by another man since he would feel lonely.

It wasn't the answer Y/n was hoping for, but she was glad that that's how he felt about their relationship. She was happy that she wasn't the only one thankful for the relationship they had.
