𝑖 𝑠𝑎𝑖𝑑 𝑖'𝑑 𝑛𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑡𝒉𝑖𝑛𝑘 𝑖 𝑤𝑎𝑠𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑒

I woke up with no recollection of what happened the night before

I look over and see Benny still sleeping

I carefully get up, trying not to wake up, I thought maybe I should give him some rest,

I successfully grabbed all of my things and left his house to walk to mine, which wasn't very far

Once I walk inside my house, I go to my room and don't know what to do for a while

I saw a piece of paper rest on my nightstand and undid the folds to reveal a number

Oh yeah, the new kid, Cameron, gave me his number

Maybe I should call him since I'm not doing anything

I dialed the numbers into the landline and waited for him to answer, and after 5 seconds of waiting, someone picked the phone up. "Hello?"

"Uh, is this Cameron?" I ask, hoping that it was him, so I wasn't calling a random number

"Yeah, who is this," he asks "Oh it's y/n do you remember,"

"It's kinda hard to forget," he said, I'm not sure whether that was a compliment or an insult, but I'll take it as a compliment

"So, are you by any chance busy today?" I asked. "If I'm not doing anything, I might as well get to know someone knew

"Uh no, why?" he asked "Well I was wondering if you wanted to maybe do something." I said, hoping that I didn't have to be lonely the whole day

"Oh yeah, I'd love to, but what would we do?" Well, I didn't think that far ahead

"We could go to a diner and just get to know each other," I suggested. He agreed, and I gave him the address of the place

I got ready fast since we said we'd meet up in 30 minutes, and it took me 10 minutes to walk there

I changed my clothes into a pair of loose fit jeans and a long-sleeved thin shirt that said 'CHICAGO' written on in

Nothing to outgoing, pretty basic, but I at least look presentable

I put little makeup on, but enough to cover up my natural look without being unrecognizable

I finished getting ready and thought that maybe I could go now since it took me forever to get ready for no apparent reason

After I left my house and walked to the diner

I walked into the diner and saw Cameron. He was sitting at a booth and waved me over to him

I walked over to him slightly nervous since I was basically meeting with a stranger

I sat down across from him. "Hey y/n," he said. "Hey Cameron, I'm surprised you remember my name," I said, truly surprised

"It's kinda hard to forget such a nice name," he said, I was flattered, but I just met this kid

"Oh, thank you," I said, not wanting to be rude

"So uh, where you from?" I asked, trying to get to know him better

"Oh, I'm from New Jersey," he said "Cool"

Me and Cameron have been talking for a good hour on random things

He also mentioned that he's gay which I would've never guessed that but whatever (random asf but for the plot😭)

We were already done with the food we ordered, so we decided to leave and walk for a little bit since there was nothing better to do

While we were walking, we were just going back and forth asking questions to get to know each other better

While in the midst of walking with Cameron, I had completely forgotten about the sandlot

I couldn't just ditch Cameron for no reason and not tell him, so I thought maybe I could just bring him to the sandlot

I mean it be nice for him to get to know more people and make new friends

"Hey, I've got an idea. How about I introduce you to some of my friends. You said you're interested in baseball, right?" I asked, making sure I wasn't about to invite him to something he's not even interested in

"Yeah, I do. Why?" he said "Well because my friends are into baseball too, and they have their own little team, I guess you could call it. " I said

"So would you wanna go?" I asked him, hoping he would say yes "Yeah sure why not. It sounds like fun, " he said

"Ok, c'mon, let's go," I said

Where we were wasn't that far from the sandlot, so we got there pretty quick

Before we could reveal ourselves to them, I stopped him

"Hey, before I introduce you guys, I should let you know. They are assholes, but once you get to know them, they're somewhat nice. " I warned him

"Um ok thanks for the heads up," he said "Ok let's go,"

I saw them playing and walked onto the field, and it took them a second to realize it was me

Once they did, though, they all looked at each other and approached me they all started asking me questions

'Where were you' 'We were waiting for forever' 'Who's this kid' 'Why were you late'

I sighed as they overbeared me with questions. "I was out doing something, but anyways, guys, this is Cameron. Uh, Cameron, this is Smalls, Yeah-Yeah, Squints, Tommy and Timmy, Bertram, Kenny, Ham, and Benny. " they all just looked at him up and down, and Cam looked uncomfortable

"Uh yeah, he's new, so I'm just showing him around, and I thought you guys could get to know each other,"I said, breaking the awkward silence between us

"Y/n, can I talk to you for a sec please" Benny asked

"Uh yeah, sure," I said, nervous about how it could be literally anything. He grabs my hand and pulls me over to the back of the beat-up dugout

"Um, well, I have a million questions, but first, where were you and why were you late?" he said with genuine concern

"Well, I kinda forgot, and Cam asked me to show him around a little since he was new," I said

"So you blow us off for a new kid." he said, sounding more and more angry as he went on

"No, it wasn't like that," I tried to explain, but he wouldn't let me

"No, it's fine, but moving on, who even is that kid?" He asked

"I've told you this before. That's Cameron, " I said kinda getting annoyed that I had to say it again

"Why would you bring a total stranger to the sandlot, we don't know who he is."

"Ok, well, I do," I said

"Ok, well, just because you know who he is doesn't mean we do. And what makes it even worse is that we went looking for you because we were worried about you and do you know how much it hurt to see you and that Cameron guy together, I didn't know what you guys were doing. It made me think that you didn't wanna hang out at the sandlot anymore, and you'd rather be with a kid you just met. Do you know how much that hurt? " he finishes

I didn't know he felt like that

"Benny, I'm sorry I made you feel that way. Is there anything I can do to make it up to you? " I said. I felt bad

I mean, I could've at least let them know I was gonna come later

He didn't say anything. He just engulfed me into a hug. I was surprised at first but then embraced the hug.

"I'm just happy you're ok" he said. That made my heart flutter. No one's really showed that they've cared for me like Benny has

That's what makes him so special to me
