AVERY AND FINNEY WOKE UP, and they were still in the basement. Neither of the two could stop thinking about the kiss yesterday, it was still fresh in their minds, and it made them smile everytime that though came by. But something that didn't make them smile, was when they thought about the events of yesterday, the events before the kiss. They had been caught and they were probably never going to have another chance of escaping ever again. The memory of the kiss slowly became a sad and distant one as they thought of staying in this basement forever.
Before anyone could say anything, the phone started ringing. They snapped their heads towards the sound. None of them wanted to hear any of the victims and what they had to say. They kept listening to the victim's ideas, but they never worked, none of them ever worked. The last one hurt Avery, and Finney was not going to be forgetting that anytime soon.
"No. Fuck you." Finney said to the phone. Avery
simply stared at the phone.
"Damn it!" Finney shouted as he went to pick up the phone. Avery still did not move, and she also didn't take her eyes off the telephone. Finn sat down next to Avery, but he didn't bother holding the phone in between their ears, he knew she could hear it, they were only a few inches apart.
"What? Are you gonna say something!? Do you even know who you are?" Finney asked, anger in his voice.
"What the shit kind of question is that?! Do you even know who you are?" The voice answered, anger also in his voice. Avery and Finney looked at each other, spooked that there was a new voice, and Avery instantly knew who it was.
"I'm Finney Blake." Finney replied his anger was now no longer with him.
"And I'm Avery, Avery Brown." The girl finally spoke up in slight annoyance. Avery knew who was calling them, it was Vance Hopper, and Vance didn't need to know her name, he already did.
"Yeah? Well nice to fucking meet you Finney Blake. Oh, and we already met, Avery Brown." The boy said from the other line of the phone. Finney still didn't know who they were talking to. Vance had said Avery's name slower, as if it was a tease, and she knew exactly why, and she simply smiled and rolled her eyes. Avery had met Vance Hopper, and even though their encounter wasn't great, he was dead, and he was fun. She wasn't going to hold anything against the boy.
"Right here. This is it." The boy continued.
"This is what?" Finney asked.
"The horrifying nightmare end of your pathetic little life."
"Holy shit. You're Vance Hopper. I remember you, you used to scare me." Finney didn't really know Vance, they just had one encounter, and they didn't even talk.
"Trust me Finney Blake, if you knew what you two had coming, you'd be fucking terrified. Today's the day, motherfucker!"
FINNEY'S FLASHBACK:
Finney was at Grab N' Go, just buying a few snacks to eat. Vance Hopper was also at the Grab N' Go, but he wasn't buying anything, he was trying to beat his pinball record, and he was really close to doing so. Vance was focused on the game, trying hard and not taking his eyes off the machine for a second. His friend was also with him, he was just eating a few chips and waiting next to his friend as he watched Vance play.
Vance was extremely close to beating his high score, closer than he ever was.
"Vance, you're gonna beat your high score." His friend said. But Vance knew he would, he was one of the best at this game.
"Of course I'm gonna do it dumpshit, I said I would." Vance simply replied, stating the obvious but still focused on his game.
Vance was pressing buttons, trying to beat his high score, when the ball landed on one of the "obstacles" of the game, making Vance and his friend look at the ball in shock. He was definetly going to beat his high score now. But before he had the chance to, a boy with ginger hair knocked into the pinball machine, making the ball fall and Vance lose his score. Anger filled Vance and he became mad, very mad. Vance grabbed the boy that had ruined his game by his shoulders, and then lifted him up in the air by his shirt.
"Mother fucker! You fucked with my game!" Vance cursed at the boy. Vance threw the boy on the floor. He didn't care if the boy was going to get hurt, he also didn't care if anyone was watching, he was going to beat the living shit out of the boy because he ruined the chance of him beating his high score, and the boy was definetly going to pay for it. Was he overreacting? Definetly, but that was who Vance was.
When the boy was on the floor, another boy with black, curly hair, who was probably the ginger boy's friend, called Vance's attention and grabbed a knife out of his pocket, threatening Vance with the weapon.
"Come here, bitch!" Told Vance to the boy, not threatened or scared at all by the boy's knife.
The black haired boy attempted to stab Vance, but he quickly dodged it, and grabbed the boy's arm, preventing the boy from attempting to try again and Vance punched him right in the face. The ginger boy stood up and began helping his other friend, and they started fighting against Vance. But they obviously had no chance, Vance was the toughest kid in town, he could beat anyone he wanted to, and he could get in many fights, but he would always win, no matter what. Vance was beating the two boys up, and the two were now on the floor. He grabbed the black haired boy by his T-Shirt collar and said.
"Don't fuck with me again!" Vance slammed the boy back onto the ground, and began slamming the boy's head harder and harder onto the ground each time. Finney was there while it happened, and he just stared at Vance while everything happened, scared to do anything.
Vance showed the boys his middle finger and walked back to his game, not caring about the event that had just happened. But, that didn't last long, because soon enough, the police had arrived and were taking Vance into their police car. Finney opened the store's door to the police, and they walked through it, holding Vance infront of them. Vance was angry at everyone and everything, he tried to fight off the police man's hands away from him, so he could escape, but he knew it was no use. And he knew better than to fight the police. And there he went, inside the police's car, and after that, Finney never saw him again.
AVERY'S FLASHBACK:
It was a usual saturday morning. Avery was hanging out with her friends, they were just walking around town talking about the most random things and occasionally entering some stores and sometimes buying things, but the other times they just went inside and looked at stuff, but didn't buy anything, making the workers in the store angry at them, and the group of teens would just leave and laugh together.
They were walking around when they spotted a store called Grab N' Go. Avery had been in that store a few times, a lot of times actually. She loved playing the game they had there, the pinball machine. The girl was obsessed with the thing, she would play it every chance she got, and she was honestly amazing at the game, she had one of the highest scores in town. As soon as the store caugh Avery's eyes, a big, happy smile came onto her face. Her friends knew how much the girl loved the game, and they found it funny, but they hated it. Everytime they passed by the store Avery would beg to go inside and they would be forced to go in by the girl. Avery would stay hours playing the game, while her friends just watched in boredom. Every single time, her friends had to force her to leave the store. Avery found it kind of funny, they all did, but for her friends it could sometimes be too unbearable.
Just like always, Avery was now begging to go inside Grab N' Go, just like she always did. Her friends kept telling her no, but somehow, she managed to persuade them into going inside. With a big groan, her friends walked inside the store with her, and the girl happily skipped beside them, the biggest smile on her face.
When they got inside, Avery rushed to the pinball machine, but unfortunately there was someone already playing infront of her. A frown appeared on her face, since she would have to wait before she had a chance to play. But she knew the boy wouldn't play for much longer, he wasn't that good, the way he was desperately trying to get a good highscore was the reason he sucked, you had to have a good tactic to get a good score, and Avery had the perfect one, that's why she was so good. Her friends were just looking around the store, looking at the snacks they were going to buy. They were starting to get hungry, and since Avery had forced them to go inside just because of her game, they were going to at least make it a bit entertaining and buy food so they could eat.
Avery had been waiting in line for a few minutes now, and the boy was finally giving up. She straightened her posture as she noticed the boy was about to leave. However, when he walked away, another boy appeared infront of her, cutting the line. The girl could only see the back of the boy's head, the boy that cut the line had curly, long, blonde hair, and he was a few inches talled than her. Avery frowned once again, angry at the boy infront of her. She had been waiting for minutes to play the game, and when she finally got the chance, this other boy went infront of her. She was not ging to let that slide.
"Hey! What the hell?!" The girl asked in anger, raising her arms in exaggeration. As soon as the words left her mouth, the boy turned his head to look at her and the girl's eyes slightly widened as she mentally cursed herself, instantly knowing who it was. It was Vance Hopper. He was the toughest kid in town, and just like her, he was obsessed with the pinball machine. Avery had heard stories about how Vance would beat up kids that messed with "his" game. Even though Avery was scared that the boy infront of her would beat her up, she wasn't going to show it, and she was definetly not going to let him cut in line, so she wasn't going to back down.
"What?" Vance asked, looking at the girl up and down. He wasn't going to lie, she was actually really pretty, one of the prettiest girl he had ever seen. He knew who she was, every boy in town did, they all talked about her, she was Avery Brown. Vance had heard people talking about how pretty she was,
and he was actually interested in her. This was the first time he was talking to her. He had seen her around town, but he never got the chance to actually talk to her, but now he was, unfortunately, it was right when he was going to play his game, and everyone knows how Vance is with his game.
"You just cut in line. I was about to play the game."
"So?" Vance asked again, he was definetly not scared of the girl, even if she was pretty. Avery was shocked, and angry by his response. Now he was definetly not going to get away with this.
"So, I have been waiting for my turn to play and I finally have the chance, so you're going to have to go back in line and wait for me to finish playing with the game! It's called respect, didn't your parents teach you that?" The girl said, slightly raising her tone as she made her point and slightly teased the boy, this made a few kids inside the store look at her and then look at Vance. When the kids in the store noticed who she was talking to, their eyes widened. Avery was about one of the first girls to actually stand up to Vance Hopper, nobody knew what would happen next. Vance was impressed by the girl, she was standing up for herself and hardly anybody ever did that, other kids would always just let him cut in line and let him play the game, but not her. However, he still wasn't going to give up his game.
"Yeah, I don't think so." Vance said with a smirk. Avery crossed her arms, she was starting to get impatient with the boy. She didn't care how tough he was, or the stories people would tell about him, she was going to play her game and she was not going to let him win.
"Well, that's not an option, asshole. You're gonna to wait just like I did and I don't care what you have to say, I'm playing the game first." Everybody's eyes went bigger than before. Avery had just called Vance Hopper an asshole. Vance's eyes also widened for a second, also taken back at the way the girl had just called him an asshole. Avery's friends arched their heads and looked at where the girl was, and they noticed she was talking to Vance Hopper. The two were facing each other, Avery's arms crossed on her chest while Vance just looked at her with one of his eyebrow's slightly arched. Her friends looked between each other, not knowing if they should get her out of here or just let her deal with the consequences of her actions.
"Do you even know who you're talking to? You know what? I'm done with you wasting my time, so how about this, you let me play and then after me, you can go, okay?" Vance replied with a certain tone as if he was treating her like a child, she definetly did not like it. Avery humorlessly chuckled at what the boy had said. Vance wasn't going to fight the girl, but she was getting on his nerves.
"You need to get your ego checked, Vance. You think you're the best at this game when you're not." Vance was surprised at first since she knew her name, but everybody did, and he did know her name, so he just brushed it off and brought his focus back to what she just said. Did she really just say that he wasn't the best at this game?
"Oh, so, are you saying you're the best? Huh, Avery?"
"I'm not saying I'm necessarily the best, I just don't have my head that far up my ass like you do." Everybody in the store gasped, including her friends and the single worker that was working there. Avery now had enough, Vance was making a big deal out of this when it obviously wasn't. Vance also had enough, the girl was too confident about herself and it was making him visibly annoyed.
"Okay, then let's see who's the best. Since you think you can keep talking shit, let's actually see who scores the highest, and then you can learn how to shut that mouth of yours." Vance said, challenging the girl. Avery was too far into the competition, she wasn't going to give up now.
"Deal." The two shook their hands together, not breaking eye contact as they did so. They were now both too far along into this.
The two decided that Vance would go first. The rules were simple, who ever scores the highest in the pinball machine would win. There wasn't really any prize for who won, they were both just doing it for their pride, which to everyone around them, sounded stupid.
"Oh, one last thing, don't go crying to your mommy when I beat your ass in this game." Vance said, whispering to the girl. Avery simply rolled her eyes in response, which made Vance laugh. Even though they were currently angry at each other, deep down they actually weren't mad and they were just doing this for fun, but they would never admit that.
Vance started the game. He was clicking some buttons and he was actually really good at the game. Avery started to get nervous, even though she knew this competition wasn't worth anything, she was actually really competetive and she wanted to win, but Vance was really good, and she honestly didn't know who would win.
Vance's score was now at 89,600 and he was still focused and trying to win, and Avery was also focused on looking at everything that Vance was doing. Vance tried ignoring the pretty girl that was next to him, but it was getting harder each second. After her challenging him, he felt attracted to her, but he wasn't going to let that stop him.
The ball finally fell into the hole, and he lost. His score ended up being 90,100. It was an amazing score, Avery wasn't sure if she could beat it, but she knew she would try, she would give it her best.
"Think you can beat that?" Vance said, challenging and teasing the girl. Avery turned to look at him with a sarcastic smile.
"I guess we'll see." And with that, she started playing the game.
Avery had never been so focused on a game before. She desperately wanted to win, and so did Vance. Vance hoped she would get a lower score than him, but he was honestly impressed with the girl's skills. She was really good, she had a chance of beating him and maybe she would, he had never seen someone play like she did. He watched as she patiently clicked the buttons on the side of the machine and how focused she was on the game.
The score was at 90,000, and Avery grew more anxious each second. The score had hit 90,100 and Avery was feeling confident, she just needed 100 more for her to beat him. Vance looked at the game in shock, was she really going to beat him? But she didn't. Because the ball fell in the hole, just like it had with Vance. Avery looked at the machine and at the score in disbelief, not moving an inch, she blinked slowly as she looked at the score, hopin it was actually wrong, but it wasn't and it hadn't changed, it was still 90,100. They had tied. Avery looked at Vance and Vance looked at her, both of them shocked. They were equally as good and they couldn't believe it. Vance thought he was the best, but here he was, with a girl that had the same score as him. What were they going to do now? Well Vance knew what he was going to do, he definetly wasn't going to let her win.
"Well, I guess I won." Spoke the boy. Avery turned her head to look at him, her mouth open in shock.
"Excuse me? You didn't win, it was obviously a tie." The girl said.
"Exactly, but since I went before you, I won. I made the score first, so I win." Avery and Vance felt anger fill both of their bodies, they were actually quite similair, even if they didn't know it.
"You won? Bullshit!" Avery didn't understand how someone could be so rude and disrespectful, and it was an obvious tie!
Avery was about to hit the boy, punching him in the face, but before she got the chance to, she felt two arms holding her arms behind her. Avery turned to look at who it was and it was her friends that were with her. Her friends knew that the girl wasn't going to hesitate, so they had to stop her. Vance felt angrier than before, he was tempted to hit the girl, but he wasn't going to do that, he may be an asshole but at this moment he had a tad bit of respect for the girl.
"Hey, come on, Avery, let's go." Spoke one of Avery's friends. Avery then calmed herself down and her friends let her go. They were leaving the store when Vance decided to speak up.
"Yeah, go home! Oh and just a reminder, I definetly won!" He yelled from his spot to the girl that was making her way to the exit.
"Asshole!" Avery shouted at the boy, flipping him off as she did so. The girl would never understand why she got so competetive over a simple game, maybe it was because she just wanted to prove something to herself, her friends and the people around her, and Vance just got caught up in the middle of that.
END OF FLASHBACK
"Have you guys tried stacking the carpets to reach the window?" Continued Vance Hopper from the other line of the phone.
"We've tried everything." Now spoke the girl.
"No! Not everything. When The Grabber saw what I had done, that was it. And he took his time with me too."
"What did you do?" Finney asked.
"Oh, that fucker had to spend a fortune to repair all the damages."
"What did you do!?" Finn asked, stressed out with the blonde boy that was on the phone. He was sure taking
