Heyy bubsss!! Little disclaimer that this chapter is written off of the books, and so if you don't recognize each line, that's why. I didn't want to just copy the movie because I'm pretty sure we all know the lines very well lol. (It's not a spoiler of the books though, if you've watched the goblet of fire)
Anyways, I hope you enjoy!:))
"You can put those away," growled our new Defense against the dark arts teacher, who went by the strange name of Mad eye Moody. "those books. You won't need them."
The classroom glances confusedly around at each other, some faces seeming excited, others seeming frightened.
I hesitantly close my book, and slide it off the desk, many other students doing the same. My eyes move back up to look at him, causing a slight jump when I see he was already looking at me.
He had one normal eye, the other one fake. The fake one would move around creepily, sometimes in a total different direction than the real one.
His appearance was the definition of intimidating, as his body was covered in scars, and his attitude was relentless.
"Right then," he says quickly, once he'd taken attendance. "I've had a letter from Professor Lupin about this class. Seems you've had pretty thorough grounding in tackling Dark creatures-"
He then reads off a list of things we had learned in last years class. Once he's done reading, we all nod and murmur in agreement with the list.
"But you're behind- very behind- on dealing with curses," he announces disappointedly, causing my eyes to widen slightly. "So I'm here to bring you up to scratch on what wizards can do to each other. I've got one year to teach you how to deal with Dark-"
"What, aren't you staying?" A voice interrupts him. I turn around to realize Ron Weasley was the one speaking, and though it surprised me, I was wondering the same thing.
"You'll be Arthur Weasley's son, eh?" Moody asks, a strange looking smile upon his face. "Your father got me out of a very tight corner a few days ago... yeah, I'm staying just the one year. Special favor to Dumbledore... one year, and then back to my quiet retirement."
My brows furrow slightly at his words, wondering what he meant by "got me out of a very tight corner a few days ago..."
He laughs loudly, causing a few students to jump out of panic.
"So... straight into it. Curses."
Moody talks about curses for awhile, explaining that we technically weren't supposed to be learning about them yet. Apparently him and Dumbledore agreed that it was best to learn them now, though, rather than later.
"So... do any of you know which curses are most heavily punished by Wizarding law?" He asks, both eyes glancing around the class in different directions.
To my surprise, many hands raise up in the air. Moody points at a student behind me, which I soon realize is Ron.
"Er- my dad told me about one... is it called the Imperius Curse, or something?" Ron says nervously, barely being able to look at the Professor.
"Ah, yes. Your father would know that one. Gave the ministry a lot of trouble at one time, the Imperious Curse."
I furrow my brows slightly at his words, though not because of the curse, but because of his statement about Mr. Weasley. Why would he know that one?
Moody then reaches down into his desk, and grabs a jar full of three spiders. I scrunch my nose up in disgust, feeling a sudden urge to raise my feet off the ground.
"Imperio!" He mutters, pointing his wand straight at one of the spiders that was now in his palm.
The spider leaps from the Professors hand and begins to swing back and forth, as though a puppet. It does a few backflips, and bends or stretches its legs out. Once the creature lands back onto the desk, it's legs start moving as if tap dancing.
Laughter fills the classroom, though my concern for the spider stops me from finding anything about what was happening funny.
"Think it's funny, do you?" Moody says grumpily. "You'd like it, would you, if I did it to you?"
Everyone immediately stops laughing.
"Total control," Moody says quietly, as he makes the spider roll around on the desk. "I could make it jump out of the window, drown itself, throw itself down one of your throats..."
As he lists the things, the classroom seems to get more and more disappointed in their laughter.
"Years back, there were lots of witches and wizards being controlled by the Imperious curse," Moody explains.
I unconsciously turn my head slightly to look at Draco, though make sure no one would be able to tell that I was. His eyes are glued onto the ground, as his face grows a soft shade of red.
"The Imperious Curse can be fought, and I'll be teaching you how, but it takes real strength of character, and not everyone's got it. Better avoid being hit with it if you can. CONSTANT VIGILANCE!" Moody yells, causing everyone to jump.
He picks up the spider on the desk, and throws it back into the jar, before speaking.
"Anyone else know one? Another illegal curse?"
A few hands fly up into the air again, though I can't tell who's hands it is because my eyes are glued to one specific person. Neville. It was almost as if he was under the Imperious Curse, and was forced to raise his hand.
"Yes?" Moody looks over at Neville.
"There's one- the Cruciatus Curse," Neville speaks quietly, though seems confident in his answer.
My eyes widen immediately at his answer, once I realize.
Neville's parents had been tortured to insanity with the Cruciatus Curse. They weren't dead though, just immensely affected by it. Neville would tell me about the times he'd go and visit them, though it absolutely broke me when he said they couldn't even remember him. Couldn't even remember their own son.
"Your name's Longbottom?" Moody asks, almost seeming shocked by his answer.
Neville nods nervously in response, though Moody says nothing else.
My heart beat starts rising with nerves, as my eyes glance between Moody and Neville.
"The Cruciatus Curse. Needs to be a bit bigger for you to get the idea." Moody says, pointing his wand at the next spider he had just taken out of the jar. "Engorgio!"
I hold my breath as I try to prepare myself for the Curse to be casted.
"Crucio!" Moody casts, pointing his wand at the spider.
My eyes widen, and my mouth falls open as I watch the spider suffer. It's legs bend in towards its body as it twitches horribly. The spider rocks side to side, clearly trying to resist the torture.
I glance at Neville, to see his hands clenched tightly on his desk, and his whole body frozen.
"Stop it!" A voice yells, though I don't care enough to see who it was before I quickly stand up and run over to Neville.
He stands up quickly as well, squeezing me in a tight hug. I can hear his shaky breath in my ear, and his nervous swallows.
I can tell that everyone is watching us confusedly, though I care more about comforting him than anyone else's judgement.
Once Neville let's go of me, I pick up his bag and start walking him out of the door.
"You'll be okay Longbottom-" Moody says almost impatiently.
I turn around to glance at our Professor, my brows furrowed in anger, as I slowly shake my head at him.
I didn't even care if I was going to get in trouble later, the thought of Moody thinking it was at all okay to do that in front of Neville was absolutely disgusting.

heyyy;)
the whole doing the curse in front of Neville has NEVER sat right with me, especially how everyone just kind of shoves it off to the side. (Harry does think about it though for awhile in the book which I appreciate) so thats why I wrote it differently:)
