It was a lazy Saturday afternoon, and Y/N was sprawled out on the couch in Mattheo's dorm, her legs hanging off the edge. The soft glow of candlelight flickered around them, casting shadows against the walls, while Mattheo casually flipped through a Quidditch magazine beside her. Y/N, on the other hand, was scrolling through her phone, completely bored out of her mind. She'd already finished her homework, cleaned her room, and had no interest in reading or anything remotely productive. Her gaze landed on an app she'd downloaded on a whim the previous week: slither.io.
"Alright, fine. Let's see if I can still do this," she muttered to herself as she tapped the app open.
Mattheo glanced up from his magazine. "Slither.io? Are you seriously about to play that? It's like... snakes eating glowing balls."
Y/N gave him an exaggerated look of offense. "Don't knock it 'til you try it. I used to be really good at this," she said with a smirk, opening a new game. "You'll see."
Mattheo raised an eyebrow, clearly skeptical. "Uh-huh, sure. Let's see how long that lasts."
She shot him a playful glare, fingers tapping rapidly on the screen as her snake slithered through the game, collecting orbs and growing in size. The longer she played, the more confident she became, her focus narrowing. This is easy, she thought, watching her snake inch closer to the top of the leaderboard.
Mattheo, glancing over, noticed the quick, focused movements of her fingers. "Alright, I'm impressed," he said, still teasing, but a little more impressed than he had been before. "You're doing better than I thought."
Y/N shot him a smug grin, her snake quickly becoming one of the longest on the screen. "Told you. I'm a pro at this."
But then it happened.
As she was in the zone, her snake grew dangerously long, wrapping around itself, weaving in and out, carefully avoiding smaller snakes. Then, from the corner of her eye, she saw itβanother massive snake, a player with impeccable timing. The snake cut her off, and before Y/N could react, her own snake collided with the other, turning into a pile of glowing orbs.
She stared at the screen for a moment, her face frozen in shock. "No... no way," she muttered under her breath, blinking at the 'Game Over' screen. The leaderboard flashed for a moment before resetting.
Mattheo chuckled softly beside her. "That was brutal."
Y/N let out an exasperated sigh. "I wasn't even that close to them! How did they evenβugh!"
Mattheo smirked, enjoying the display of frustration. "You were doing well, though."
Y/N gave him a side-eye, her fingers already hovering over the screen to start a new round. "That was a fluke. I'm not letting it happen again."
She restarted the game, determined to make it to the top. Her snake started off small, but she quickly gained momentum. The more she played, the more focused she became. She dodged and weaved around other snakes, gobbling up pellets, and her snake grew longer once again.
"Okay, now this is it. I've got it in the bag," she muttered to herself, her concentration razor-sharp.
But then, as if the universe was conspiring against her, it happened again.
A different player, this one even bigger than the last, swooped in from the top of the screen. She saw it too late, her snake barely able to swerve in time to avoid the massive snake. And before she could react, her snake was consumed by the larger one, disappearing in an instant.
"No, no, NO!" Y/N slammed her hand down on the couch, frustrated beyond measure. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. "This game is rigged! I swear to Merlin, it's cheating."
Mattheo chuckled again, though there was a teasing note in his voice. "I didn't realize you were so invested in this."
"Of course I'm invested! I don't lose games like this!" She grabbed her phone again, ready to try for the third time. "Let's see if I can actually make it to the top this time. Maybe I just need to be more strategic."
Mattheo raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything. He could already tell where this was headed. Y/N was clearly getting frustrated, but it wasn't like she could stop. It was like a challenge now, one she wasn't about to back down from.
Her snake started off well again, growing steadily. But before long, she made a slight mistakeβjust a small miscalculation on her partβand suddenly, her snake was headed straight for a wall of other glowing orbs.
Her panic set in too late.
A smaller snake came from behind, cutting her off before she had a chance to change direction. It spiraled around her, trapping her in place, and in a split second, her snake was gone. Gone, just like that.
Y/N's hands gripped her phone so tightly, her knuckles went white. "I swear, if this one more snake gets me, I'm done," she hissed through gritted teeth.
Mattheo glanced at her phone, trying not to smile too much. "I think it might be time for a break."
But Y/N wasn't done. Not yet. She tapped the screen again, starting yet another game. Her eyes were narrowed, her focus now borderline intense. Her snake grew quickly again, weaving expertly through the game, and for a moment, it looked like she might actually make it to the top.
But thenβit happened again.
Out of nowhere, a massive snakeβbigger than anything she'd seen yetβappeared, trapping her once again. She had no escape, no way to slither out. And in an instant, her snake was eaten alive, disappearing into nothingness.
Y/N stared at the screen for several moments, completely stunned. "No... no way. No way did that just happen," she muttered, her voice almost breaking as frustration hit its peak. "I can'tβthis is so unfair."
Mattheo watched, his smirk now replaced with genuine amusement. "Alright, that's it. I think the universe is telling you to stop."
Y/N tossed her phone onto the couch, her eyes blazing with defeat. "You know what? Fine. I'm done. I'm officially done with this stupid game."
Mattheo chuckled softly. "You've been at it for over an hour. That's a good run, at least."
Y/N shot him a glare. "Don't start, Riddle. You owe me now. Emotional damages, you know?"
Mattheo raised an eyebrow, confused. "Emotional damages?"
She folded her arms and leaned back against the couch, crossing her legs. "Yes. I just lost an hour of my life, my pride, and at least six games in a row. You owe me a Mickey Bar. Stat."
Mattheo's eyebrow twitched upward in amusement. "A Mickey Bar? What is this, some sort of negotiation tactic?"
"Just get me one. Now," she demanded, still clearly worked up, but trying to mask it with a playful tone. "You know how much I love those. And after the trauma I've been through today, I deserve it."
Mattheo couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. "Fine, fine. But you're lucky I'm in a good mood, Kane. I'll get you your precious Mickey Bar."
Y/N grinned triumphantly. "Good. I'll even let you come with me, as long as you don't tease me about the game for the rest of the day."
"Deal," Mattheo said, standing up with a grin. "You get your Mickey Bar, and I get to hold it over your head forever."
Y/N shot him a look of playful annoyance. "One day, Riddle, I'll get you back for this."
"Yeah, yeah. Let's go before you change your mind."
As they left the dorm, Y/N couldn't help but feel a little less frustrated, her mood lightened by the promise of the sweet treat and Mattheo's teasing banter. Even if she never won that slither.io game, at least she'd gotten something out of it.
