Y/N's body jerked awake, her heart pounding as her breath came in shallow gasps. The remnants of the nightmare still clung to her, vivid images of her beloved books engulfed in flames, reduced to nothing but ashes. She could still smell the smoke, hear the crackling of the fire in her mind. The fear was all-consuming, and her hands trembled as she gripped the sheets.
Beside her, Mattheo stirred, his eyes flicking open as he felt the sudden tension in the bed. He immediately noticed the panic in her eyes. Without a second thought, he shifted closer to her, his bare chest brushing against her side. He was only in his boxers, his movements slow but filled with concern.
"Y/N..." he murmured softly, his voice still thick with sleep, but the worry was evident. "Nightmare?"
Y/N nodded quickly, her voice trembling as she whispered, "It was so real, Mattheo. My books... they were burning. Everything I love, gone. Please, please check on them. Please make sure they're okay."
Mattheo's heart ached seeing her like this, her eyes wide with fear. He knew how much her books meant to her. They weren't just objects; they were pieces of her soul, her comfort, her escape. He reached out, gently cupping her face in his hand, his thumb brushing across her cheek.
"I'm here, love. I'm not going to let anything happen to them," he reassured her, his voice soft and steady. "But I'll check on them. I'll make sure everything's fine. Stay here, alright?"
Y/N nodded weakly, still trembling as she watched him stand up from the bed. The soft moonlight bathed his figure, his muscles tense but graceful as he walked toward the door, his boxers hanging low on his hips. He paused before leaving, turning back to her with a reassuring smile.
"I'll be right back. Everything's fine, I promise."
He left the room, and Y/N remained frozen in bed, her mind trapped between the nightmare and reality. The fear was suffocating. What if it wasn't just a nightmare? What if it was real? The thought clawed at her as she gripped the sheets tightly, her heart racing again.
A few moments later, the door opened, and Mattheo returned, a soft smile on his face. His bare chest still visible, he walked straight toward her, closing the distance between them in seconds. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her tightly into a warm embrace.
"Y/N," he murmured into her hair, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "I checked. Everything's fine. Your books are safe. No fire, no smoke. They're all exactly where you left them."
Y/N let out a shaky breath, the knot in her chest slowly loosening as she allowed herself to relax against him. She closed her eyes, letting the warmth of his body ease the fear from her mind. "Are you sure?" she asked quietly, her voice still trembling.
"I'm sure," Mattheo said, his voice steady and calm. He stroked her hair gently, soothing her. "I won't let anything happen to you or your books."
Y/N clung to him, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her ear. Slowly, her panic started to fade, but the lingering trace of the nightmare still haunted her. She couldn't shake the image of the fire.
Mattheo held her tightly, pressing her into his chest. "I'm not going anywhere, love. Your books are safe. You're safe."
They stayed like that for a while, in the quiet embrace of the night. Y/N's breathing slowed, and she began to feel the safety of their bond wash over her. He wasn't just comforting her physically β he was making sure her world stayed intact, just like he always did.
The next morning, Mattheo woke her with a soft kiss to her forehead. "How are you feeling, love?" he asked, his voice tender as he ran his fingers through her hair.
Y/N stretched, blinking against the soft morning light streaming through the window. The remnants of the nightmare still clung to her, but she could feel the reassurance of Mattheo's presence beside her. She smiled softly, though a part of her still felt uneasy. "I'm better... but I'm still worried about my books."
Mattheo kissed her forehead again, a hint of mischief in his eyes. "Well, I've got something to make sure you're never worried again."
Y/N raised an eyebrow in confusion as he stood up and reached for something near the door. He had already gone ahead and installed security cameras around the room. She blinked in surprise as he led her to the large screen now mounted on the wall. The screen flickered to life, showing a live feed of her bookshelves, every book neatly lined up, untouched by the nightmare's terror.
"What... Mattheo, what is this?" she asked, a mix of surprise and admiration in her voice.
He grinned, clearly proud of his work. "I know how much your books mean to you. And I know how shaken up you were by that nightmare. So I set up some cameras. You can check on them anytime, and you'll always know they're safe."
Y/N stood there, stunned for a moment. She had never expected this β but the thought of being able to check on her books anytime, to know they were safe and secure, filled her with a sense of peace she didn't even realize she needed.
"I..." she trailed off, looking at him in disbelief. "You did all of this... just for me?"
Mattheo stepped closer, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her to him. "Of course. I'll do anything to make sure you're not worried. Your peace of mind is worth more than anything to me."
Y/N smiled softly, her heart swelling with love for the man who knew exactly what she needed before she even realized it herself. "I don't deserve you," she whispered, leaning up to kiss him lightly on the lips.
Mattheo chuckled softly, cupping her face gently. "You don't have to deserve it, Y/N. I love you, and that's all that matters."
Y/N melted into his embrace, the worries of the night finally fading away. With Mattheo by her side, she knew she could face anything β even the nightmares that haunted her dreams.
