I got ready for bed, saying my goodnights to Jeff and dad already. I turned off the lights while crawling under the covers as Monroe cuddled against my stomach. Today was hell, first Scarfy's stupid little comment, bloody nose and ruined my favorite jacket, and went half crazy looking at a house.. Where a murder took place! Yep.. This has been real fun.. At least I learned the asshole's name... Clyde. Would be cuter if he wasn't such a dickhead.. I cannot wait to sleep... So I thought anyway.
"I have to bury Zowie." I looked over to the side of me, seeing Drew and Jeff. Drew looked mournful as he stood before my brother, Jeff sat on his bike with a solemn expression. I looked around confused, seeing just the two of them.
"Jeff, what are you doing here? And.. Hey? Who's, Zowie? Why does Drew need to bury 'em, what happened?" I tried asking him, hoping he'd answer me. But he doesn't. He ignored me, not even glancing in my direction.
"I'll go get a shovel." Jeff offers sadly, taking off from his spot.
"Pet Sematary..." I heard a voice whisper out airily. It wasn't my mother this time. It sounded male.
"What? What does Pet Sematary have to do with anything?" I asked dumbly. I watched as Drew slowly turned back and walked off, leaving me to watch them as they leave in separate directions.
"Don't let them go to Pet Sematary.." The voice whispered out again forebodingly.
"Why? What is so bad about Pet Sematary? It is bad, isn't it? Did that house have to do with it?" I asked out again, looking around desperately for the voice that seemed to be everywhere around me at once.
"You can't let them go to Pet Sematary..." My face scrunched, a mixture of fright and annoyance stirring in me greatly.
"But why?! Why is it so bad!?" There was no one there, just me alone in a now dense fog. One that slowly started to show but in a blink of an eye was all around.
I heard a low growl sound from behind me, causing me to turn around in alarm, but it was so dark I couldn't see anything. But I could sense that something was there. Something that was staring back at me with predatory eyes. I squinted my eyes trying to make the thing out in the dark. The figure growled again, my eyes widening as I saw a large dog take a step towards me. It was gross looking. It's whole body was all bloody and covered in dirt. It's fur matted and clumps of dirt stuck in its mangled fur. Like it had been to hell and back. It growled again. 'This is because of Pet Sematary? No, that.. That can't be possible..!'
"You know it's true.. You've seen what it can do already. The horrors it's capable of.." I faintly hear. I don't know if it was someone in my dreams saying it or just myself, but it was true. I do know, I don't know how or why. But I do. I closed my eyes for a brief second and reopened them, just as the dog lunged at me.
I jumped and flung up from my bed. My father opening the door just as I sat up.
"Are you alright, Aunna?" I cleared my throat, forcing a nod as I tried to gather myself.
"Yeah. Fine." His look doesn't falter but accepted the answer anyways, deciding to leave it for the time being.
"Don't let them go to Pet Sematary.." My eyes widen, jumping up from my bed, almost knocking Monroe off as I do so. I ran out my door and to Jeff's quickly, swinging it open without knocking. Damn! It was empty, running back into my room to randomly pick out an outfit and threw it on as I ran downstairs. Almost tripping down the steps to put my boot on.
"Hey, dad. Where's Jeff?" I asked rushed, as I finished tying up my laces. He looked up from the newspaper he was reading.
"He went over to Drew's place. If you want I-" He started but I was already halfway out the door.
"Thanks." I yelled, already running down the steps and to my bike. What if the dog is actually dead? And what if they.. Oh, would you calm down?? Who am I kidding? There is no way a Sematary can bring back the dead. It's just a Sematary..! But still.. There's still the fact that I don't even know for a fact that Drew even has a damn dog in the first p- Exactly! Maybe it was just a weird dream. You don't even know if he does have a dog. I started pedaling the bike towards Drew's house, trying not to get worked up as I found some reasoning to grasp onto. Doing my best to assure myself I was just overthinking things. But as much as I tried telling myself it was nothing, I couldn't help but feel like it wasn't.
I stopped outside of the house and jumped off the bike. I ran up to the door, knocking on it rapidly. I waited less than a minute before a really pretty lady answered the door. She must be Drew's mom.
"Uh, hello. Can I help you?" She greets me with a slight smile. I huffed out a breath real quick before answering.
"Is either Drew or Jeff here?" I hoped. She shook her head no, crushing that hope. Her words causing my stomach to drop.
"No, sorry. In fact, Drew was gone half of the night and hadn't been back since he left." She explained with sadness, worried for her son.
"Did, uh.. Did his dog.. happen to die last night..?" I inquire cautiously. She gave me a concerned look, slowly nodding her head. I try to withhold my shock, stalling to process.
"Thank you, ma'am." I ran back to my bike, my panic rising. Okay, okay. Calm down. So maybe, it is just some freak coincidence. Maybe they're just at the school. It's not like they would have even thought of the Pet Sematary. Right? Well, Pet Sematary is where to bury your animal when it dies. Yeah, but not to bring back the dead! Seriously?! Who the hell would even think to do that..!? The back parts.. The back part of the Sematary with the 'Keep out sign'.. No. Why would anyone go that way to bury their pet? Seems like an awful amount of work.. Okay. Fine. I'll check the school first..
I made a sharp stop in front of the school and scanned out front of the school but didn't see them anywhere. Something in me panicking, as I didn't see either one of them. My eyes land on Clyde and his friends standing outside watching me tauntingly. I got off my bike, letting it fall to the ground and walked towards them.
"Have any of you seen my brother or Drew?" I question them forcefully. They laughed as Clyde took a step forward so he was standing directly in front of me. He wasn't too much taller than me, maybe a half a foot or so, but still it was something he was using in hopes to intimidate me. He looked up real quick before looking down at me with a smirk plastered on his face.
"And why would I tell you that?" He and his friends snicker. I glared, turning around harshly and started for my bike.
"So they're not here, are they?" I counter, getting on my bike. He rolled his eyes, but shrugged his shoulders. I looked away from him, looking down at my bike handles for a moment. So in other words, they're not here. That.. That means.. They really went to Pet Sematary..
"Shit!" I cursed, a bit louder than intended, slamming my hands on the handles rashly. I took off on the bike going straight for the cemetery.
I made my way out front of Pet Sematary and jumped off of the bike, running straight up the hill to get to the cemetery within. I dash through it, making sure not to step on the graves of the dead animals, stopping short in front of the hidden path. I tried forcing my body to get over the overwhelming feeling as I stared at the top of the branch covered path ahead. I shuddered, running up the hill, trying my best not to trip over anything along the way. The branches seemingly coming alive to try and pull me down under. I stumbled a few times from some that had managed to catch me but pushed myself up and continued the trail. I slapped a branch out of my face, finding myself in front of a huge open area. Stopping as a new feeling hit me once I got to the opening. A clear opening except piles of rocks that were spread out throughout the place.
Something blocked my vision for a second, it was like back at the Creed house. It was like I was looking down at the area right now. The rocks and stones-.. They make a pattern.
"Ancient Indian burial grounds." I could almost hear someone whisper out informatively. I shivered as the wind blew ominously around me, the trees shaking violently as if trying to fend me off.
"They used it to bring the dead back to life.." So.. is that what they plan to do with Zowie? How does this even bring the dead back, that's not even possible! I stared at the huge area, my mind feeling spacey and cloudy. I could hear voices coming from behind me, I just couldn't bring myself to turn around as the wind still blows with eeriness. Finally I snapped out of my daze and picked up a big rock, getting ready to throw it when I noticed Drew and Jeff... and a dog. A dead dog, hanging lifelessly from his arms. That must be Zowie..
"Hey! Whoa! Aunna, just us! Put down the rock!" Jeff yelled. I thought about it for a second before throwing the rock anyways. It hit him in the shoulder causing him to yell out.
"OW! What the hell!? Are you crazy??" He yelled at me. I glared harshly at both him and Drew.
"I'm sorry, Drew. I know you miss him but I can't let you bury Zowie. Not here. Just go and forget all about this place.." I pointed them away from the area, standing in their way. I could hear the desperation in my voice but it wasn't really me that was talking.. It didn't feel like it was really me. They looked at me in slight shock, but Drew shook his head and started walking up to me.
"Can't I just bury my dog and be on my way? It's not like he's going to hurt anything by being up here." He sounded so hurt. Lonely. Like he, he had just lost his best friend. I closed my eyes, knowing what it's like to lose someone close, but then reopened them while shaking my head. Remembering why I was here in the first place.
"You can't! I know what's going to happen, and he is going to come back." I urge completely and utterly serious. The urgency in my voice clear. His lips twitched upward into a small smile.
"And what would be so wrong with that anyways?" He asked, Jeff now making his way beside him.
"He won't come back the same! That's what's wrong!" I yell at him.
"I'm telling you this for your own safety. Everyone's safety! He is going to come back. And he is going to kill! People are going to get hurt if you bury him here." I almost begged at this point. Jeff and Drew make faces, their brows scrunched in absurdity before snickering out.
"Riiiight. Sure, Aunna. We believe you." Jeff laughed out in a feign agreement.
"Man, I think your sister did go crazy." Drew says as he and Jeff walked past me. Hopelessness wanting to crush me from the inside out. They'll never listen.. They never do.. I growled under my breath before running up and stopping in front of them.
"Fine, bury him, don't say I didn't warn you. But if he comes back and I- If I get hurt because of this, I'm going to kill you both in the afterlife. Got that?" I threatened. I started storming away, as they continued to joke and talk about me being deranged. I stopped and turned around, them still watching me. I frowned at them, looking down at the dog that dangled limply.
"Just so you know, you guys just killed us all.." I mumbled coldly. I don't know why I'm getting so worked up about this. There's something telling me there's more behind this then I know. And I have a really bad feeling about this. About all of it.
I marched down the hill to get to my bike, but the entire time it was like something was trying to force me to go back. But they're not going to listen to me. They already think I'm crazy as it is. I shook my head vigorously, getting on my bike and started pedaling towards home absentmindedly. Dad is going to be pissed if he found out I didn't go to school today too..
I took my time getting home, my mind to distracted to focus on the present. Just thinking about different possibilities that could happen with burying the dog. What if that's what happened, with that house. What if that guy brought an animal back and it killed them... Come on, Aunna! There is no way this is even possible. Let alone one animal taking out a whole family. There is no such thing as bringing the dead back to life! I heard a car horn blaring, causing me to look up in time to see a car coming at me. Oh shit! My eyes widened and slammed my foot to the ground, pushing myself back on the sidewalk. Holy shit.. That could have ended badly.
I closed my eyes, putting my hands up to my face, rubbing it exasperatedly for a brief moment in hopes to rid myself of my headache. Laughter came from the other side of the street, causing me to pull my hands away dully. Immediately seeing Clyde smirking, staring at me. His friends on either side of him, snorting away. I stared back before looking back to see if it was clear to cross. It was finally good to cross the street, passing by Clyde and his little goons. Our eyes caught each other's for a moment while we passed, not being able to help but look at his captivating eyes every time I saw him. I pulled my eyes away from his and continued on home wearily. Why is he always there!? Everywhere I look, he's there!
I got home, dropping my bike to the ground and sulked upstairs to the front door sluggishly. I trudged up the stairs inside too, heading straight to bed. I slumped down to sit, kicking off my boots tiredly. Monroe climbed up my back and slid down my stomach. I shook my head, grabbing her to place on my chest as I laid down. She got up, not liking where I put her before crawling up and snuggled under my chin. I smiled softly but it soon faltered.
"Everything is going to end. Just because of one dog. I can feel it.." I murmured. I felt my eyes droop, my mind and body wanting nothing more than an actual night's good rest.
I woke up in the middle of the night to someone pounding on the door. I groaned loudly, thinking I was actually gonna get a good night's sleep but was sadly mistaken. I got up, rudely knocking Monroe off of my chest, I should mention. I yawned, rubbing my eyes while walking to my door, irritated with the rushed knocking that sounded out again. I opened it, Jeff standing there hopping around while struggling to put his socks and shoes on. I glared bitterly, crossing my arms at him.
"Leave me the hell alone." I ignore, going to slam the door in his face. His hand shot out as he stopped the door. His feet finally dressed.
"You might want to come with us.." I gave him a look, before walking back into my room and put my boots on.
"Fine." I grumbled walking past him and down stairs. I met dad by the door and once he saw me, he started walking out with me closely behind, while Jeff ran to catch up. I sat in the back like always and Jeff in front. I leaned against the back wall drowsily, soon feeling the van pull off.
After a while I felt the van pull to a stop. I stood up, going to open the door when dad opened them instead, beside him was Drew.. Standing there, holding Zowie. Alive. I screamed out in terror, pushing myself back against the wall, trying to get far away from it as fast as I possibly could. I cringed away from it, my eyesight then shooting towards Drew and Jeff. All of them giving me a strange or peculiar look. Mostly dad and Drew's mother. Drew and Jeff, they gave me a different look then dad and his mother. Dad cleared his throat.
"So, uh. What happened?" He asked, not sure how to react to my reaction. I slowly brought myself to look back at the thing, it's eyes staring right back at me. Us now having a staring contest, that almost felt like to the death. Everything in me telling me to get away from the thing. To burn it. To rid it from our lives.
"Some psycho got trigger happy." Drew replied half bluntly sarcastic. I glared at the dog, feeling more and more on edge the longer it stared at me. With myself still pushed up against the wall of the van, I slowly inched my way to get past the beast. Wanting, needing to be as far away from the thing. I jumped out of the van landing in front of Jeff and Drew, glaring intently at both of them, unaware that Gus was in the doorway watching. I pushed them back roughly, making sure we were away from the van so the adults wouldn't hear anything.
"Are you idiots happy now?! I hope all our deaths is worth it!" I whispered to them harshly.
"Maybe we just buried him alive. And why are you so against it, anyway? How did you even know we were going to be there? Or that the dog was-..?" Jeff asked, trailing off at the end. He knew he couldn't ask how I knew it was dead, because then they wouldn't believe
