The two of them following closely behind.
"Aunna, what are you going?"
"Are you sure this well even work?" I shrugged my shoulders, glancing at my dad in the front seat. He sat with his head in his hands, down on the wheel. I'm sorry, dad. You've been alone in this, even more than I have. I looked at Jeff, who was looking at dad too.
"Jeff, why don't you go see if he's alright? Clyde, you should go with him." They both gave each other a look, turning back to me with a less than impressed look.
"Not a chance."
"We're going with you." I glared at the two.
"No. You're not." I walked past them both, going to get the containers from earlier. The other two ran on either side of me, each grabbing one before I could. I hopped in place for a second, as I tried to run after them.
"Either we go too, or you don't go at all." I looked at Clyde, then to Jeff. I rolled my eyes at them, turning around. I made my way to the path, leading the way up to the Pet Sematary.
"We don't have all day, let's go!" I grumbled, trying to push the pain away that I felt in my leg now that I was walking. I heard them trudge behind me, rushing to hurry after me. We quickly made our way to the back of the sematary, causing me to stop as we got to the 'keep out' signs.
"Aunna?"
"Is this it?"
"Burn the burial sight, kill the Wendigo." I looked beside me, the man I've concluded to be Victor stood there, staring up the branch infested path. I nodded to myself, making my way.
"Aunna, maybe you should let someone else go first."
"Aunna, you really shouldn't be walking this."
"I have too." I felt my foot slip, falling backwards before someone caught me. Clyde, almost dropping the container of gasoline.
"Jesus! Are you sure you want to do this?" I stopped, trying to regain balance as he props me upright.
"This is why I told you two to stay behind." They huffed again more behind me, a hand slipping into my own.
"We do this together. You're not on your own anymore." I looked back at Clyde, eyes shifting to Jeff as he nods.
"You're stuck with us now." I smiled at the two, once again trying to push the tears back.
"Well then, let's go boys." I forced my leg up, over a bigger branch that was blocking the path, hissing in pain. I looked up at the sky, it getting darker the longer we hiked. Huffing and puffing, all of us trudging up the small, narrow path. Finally making it to the open field-like area at the top. I stopped stiffly, scanning over the area.
"Holy shit." Clyde exclaims, almost in wonder as he looked around.
"This is definitely the place.. Why the hell would you guys bury a dog here, man?!" Jeff whipped around to face Clyde who questioned his poor decisions.
"Could you maybe not, remind me-" I groaned at the two.
"Guys! Not now.. Even if Clyde does have a point." I mumbled.
"What?! He's got nothing, are you forgetting the shit he's done?!" I ignored them, staring at the area in front of us, the two of them bickering still behind me.
"Who even brings a cat to school, dude? You were asking for shit!" Clyde threw at Jeff.
"It was my first day! I didn't think the town was gonna be filled with assholes like you!" Jeff defended.
"You're just a pansy! Needin' your.. Wait.. You two are twins, right? Who's older?" Clyde went to mock, suddenly stuck on a non important question.
"I'm older asshole, so try again!" Jeff yelled back victoriously. I could almost laugh at them, but all my senses stopped me from doing so. I stared, eyes wide, and body stiff at the burial grounds before me. Everything told me to leave the area as quickly as possible. My blood ran cold, my mouth went dry, palms were getting sweaty. The air felt so thick, it was getting hard to breathe.
"Aunna?"
"What's wrong?" I swallowed hard, as if something were caught in my throat. The feeling of dread, sadness and despair lingered heavily in the air. The cries and screams of the lives taken by this place seemed to cry out, echoing all around. The sounds of animals howling, growling and snarling all around us. I tried breathing in to calm myself, the air being too thick to do so. I turned to the other two, grabbing a container from the closest one by me, being Jeff. I turned on my heel, going for the stones that were laid and organized in its ominous pattern.
"Aunna? Seriously can we talk about this first?"
"Did you see something?"
"I didn't see anything." I opened the cap of the gas can, continuing to make my way.
"So what's wrong? Hey! Did you bury anyone else we should be aware of?" I could almost picture Clyde giving Jeff a look. Only picturing the look Jeff gave back.
"No, I did not bury anyone else!" I walked backwards, pouring the gas out on the ground in front of me.
"Aunna, seriously. What's wrong then?" I continued to trudge backwards around the outer circle, leaving a thick trail of the liquid.
"We're not welcomed here." I walked along the stones.
"Not welcomed here?" Jeff parroted dumbly. I nodded.
"Yeah, cause that doesn't sound fucking creepy.." I shot Clyde a look, his face falling rather quickly. I looked back down, making sure to cover every last bit of the pattern. Every stone, every inch. Making an outer circle around the overall layout.
"You guys can't feel it?" I asked, as if they should.
"If you mean the sudden eerie feeling of impending death, then yes. Yes, I do. Thanks." I gave a small smile.
"Could you guys-.. Just give me the other one would you?" I stayed in my place, leg throbbing in pain, leaving Clyde to walk it to me.
"You want me to do it?" I shook my head, going to grab it from him. He pulled it back, causing me to look at him aggravatingly.
"What are you doing?" I go to grab it again, him pulling it back again as well.
"I was thinking.." He smiles, taking a step closer. I give him a look as if saying to get on with it already, causing him to smile more.
"I'm surprise you think." I retort, going to reach for it again, him putting it in his other hand, so it was further away from me now.
"Ha!" We turn to Jeff, each of us giving him a look. I point a finger at him.
"You don't start, you're already on the shit list buddy!" Clyde smiles at him smuggly, Jeff turning his head to look at something else suddenly of interest.
"Can I have the fucking thing now?" He turns back to me, still smiling.
"Well, I was thinking. Does this mean we're boyfriend and girlfriend now?" I blinked at him once, completely deadpanned. Normally, I'd like this moment. Reacted differently, but right now? He had to ask, right in this very moment? It was silent as I stared at him, Jeff hunched over trying to keep his laughs quiet.
"I can't.." I shook my head to myself, grabbing my head from the raging headache.
"Go sit in the asshole section." I held my head still, pointing near Jeff. Jeff, now being unable to keep it to himself, laughing hysterically. Knowing he's in the section, but now he's got a buddy to join him. Clyde smiles more this time, handing the can over to me.
"Okay, bad timing. I get that. I'll be right over there." He points, walking over to Jeff. I huffed to myself, pouring more of the gasoline around the area. I stopped, feeling the can get about half empty. I put the cap on, walking around to the other side, towards the boys who stood there eagerly. I stopped somewhere on the other side, standing a few feet away from the stones. I reached out behind me, holding the can for one of them to grab.
"Jeff, come grab this. Clyde, come here." I heard both of them shuffle, each doing as told. Jeff took the can from me, and Clyde made his way up beside me. I turned away from the stones, looking at him knowingly. The sun setting steadily behind him.
"You still smoke?" I hint. He pauses to think about it for a second, hands then digging in his pockets. He finally pulled out a plain black lighter, holding it out for me. I grabbed it from him, turning back to the stones. I took a few steps, crouching awkwardly in front of it. I sparked it up, flames immediately making it's way around the stones. I stood from my spot, taking a few steps back quickly. The stones were quick to be consumed with fire, black smoke rising from the stones. The black smoke increased at an alarming rate, soon there was more smoke than what seemed like breathable air. I took a step back, watching the smoke twist and bend. The amount of smoke, being an overwhelming amount.
"Why is there so much smoke?"
"Guys? I don't think that's normal!" My eyes, head, followed as the smoke grew more and more, trying to take shape. Can the other two see this? Is this another vision?
"What the hell is that?!" I watched the smoke form this large, overbearing horned beast like monster. It had no eyes, only empty sockets that looked completely hollow. Inside and out. The amount of dread, loathing, and every other soul sucking emotion was adamant in the air.
"What the fuck is that thing?!"
"Aunna! Get the fuck away from it!" I stared timidly at the smoke monster in front of us, as it towered above us with all its terrifying might. The smoke split itself apart, as if it were opening its mouth, and pulled back as if taking a deep breath. I felt my blood freeze, going completely rigid, as a shiver ran up along my spine. The monster's roar was more overwhelming than anything I've ever witnessed yet. Piercing the very core of my being. Devastatingly soul crushing. Everything seemed to freeze at that moment, watching the monster as it seemingly yells at us. Cursing us. I shivered more, mustering everything I had not to cower before the beast. I stomped my uninjured leg on the ground, taking a step forward. You hurt to many people! You don't belong here, and I won't let you stay here anymore!
"You're not welcomed here!" I glared at the monster, finding my newfound courage. It roared at us again, the other two yelling out, only for them to be drawn out by the ear splitting cry of the beast. It no longer felt my fear, because I had none for it. The stones stopped putting out black smoke, the black smoke hanging above airlessly. It cried out again monstrously, the smoke slowly being pulled away. The smoke started to disperse, the monster crying out the more it started to disappear. The hatred, resentment and desperation of it coming through more as it tried hard to keep its form solid.
I took another step forward, screaming out at the beast in return. All the hate, anger, guilt and sadness, being let out in a roar of my own. Not just my pain, but everyone that was hurt by this creature. The Creeds, the neighbor, who showed the Creeds the Sematary in the first place. Every one who had every come in contact with this God forsaken place, all cried out in a fierce effort to drive the monster away. I felt the air finally leave my lungs, leaving me there heaving as the beast finally disappear completely. The air was still, and nature seemed to go quiet as it wasn't sure if it was completely safe yet. The only sounds being heard was my heavy breathing and the occasional crack from the slowly dying fire that was still burning the stones.
