Minji's POV
We were heading to our first class. Yoohyeon was walking in front of us with her friend. She seemed fine. She was walking lazily I mean, like always. But she wasn't hurt anywhere and she was walking normally, so that was fine I guess. She was talking with Dami about something. Actually about her not going out that much. I could see it in her face that something was wrong. I wondered what this girl have went through in her life...
"Come on Minji! We'll be late for class!" Bora said and took my hand. I was brought back to reality once again. I turned left in the corner and then I got in to class. Yoohyeon's class was a few meters away only.
Later on it was break time. Me and the girls got out. I headed to Yoohyeon's class to see how she was. She rarely got out and even if she did she never saw that I was around here watching her from afar. Handong soon found us and then she got in to the classroom to talk with the girls. Bora held my hand and we got into the classroom too. Yoohyeon was sitting on a desk at the corner of the classroom all alone. Dami was sitting beside her but it still felt like the classroom didn't include her to everything nor take her as an ordinary student. It seemed more like she was a burden to them. I didn't know why they felt like that about her. She didn't do anything wrong.
"Hey tree, hey Dami!" Handong said.
"Why do you greet me by calling me tree and to her you just greet her by her name? This is unfair!"
"Awww someone is jealous!" Dami sang song to Yoohyeon and then she pulled her tongue out to her.
"Yah! I'm not jealous! It's just... I'm the third wheel... Aish! I have to get used to it." Both girls laughed.
"Yoohyonnie! You know we love you!" Handong said cutely.
"Yeah yeah sure. Now let me study."
"I was actually going to offer you to come with us for lunch. If you want." Handong said and showed us. Yoohyeon raised her head up and looked at my way. Her glasses have fallen a little from her eyes and her ponytail was low and messy. She was so beautiful with glasses. I smiled at her the very first second she looked at me. She seemed untouched by my move nonetheless, and she just looked back at Handong. She was about to say no when Dami interrupted her and said that they will come. She then looked at Yoohyeon signaling her to stand up. Yoohyeon looked at her in disbelief and then she stood up and walked lazily, like always. When she came close to me I immediately smiled at her but she seemed again untouched by it and passed by me like she never saw me. Yoohyeon was always harsh to people. Even if she didn't talk that much, her actions was harsh. And I couldn't blame her. If people were talking badly about me I would be like that too. Actually no. I would be depressed. She always seemed untouched of this world though. She might have more important things to do or more serious problems to solve than people criticizing her badly.
We got out of the classroom and headed to the cafeteria to buy some food. Bora nudged my arm and then she showed me Yoohyeon.
"Your crush is coming with us. Finally! It took her ages but she made it!" She said teasing me.
"You mean the mute girl? She isn't for Minji. Minji is too good for her." Siyeon said protectively.
"What are you guys talking about?" I asked them seriously.
"She isn't my crush and I think she is a good girl, Siyeon."
"Yeah yeah say whatever you want. She is your crush and you are just too chicken to admit it!" Bora said and then she started imitating chickens. She was making sounds similar to chickens. Like as if they were! Only in her dreams! Siyeon was laughing along with Bora and then she came close to me.
"If she is right though, and that little mute thing is your crush... I'll kill you." I looked at her not believing my ears.
"What are you saying Siyeon?" Fortunately Yoohyeon and the girls were walking few meters away from us or else...
"Do you like her unnie?" She waited patiently for my answer. When she saw that I wasn't going to answer she continued.
"Unnie. This is serious. From all the girls in this school, why it has to be her?" she asked pretty annoyed.
"I don't understand Siyeon. What is wrong with her?" I asked her a little annoyed too.
"I should have seen it coming. Of course! Kim Minji always likes the different one. She is always looking for something unique. Something that it's out of the ordinary. Something that no one else would want or like!" She ended up yelling a bit while whispering. She was frustrated. But why? What was wrong with her?
"Singie... you are being too harsh on her. Let her be. Minji isn't a child. She knows what is good and what isn't. If Yoohyeon isn't a good girl she will see it. She isn't blind!" Bora said.
"If it wasn't for Bora..." Siyeon just mumbled.
"Just be carefull. There are a lot of bad rumors about her. They can't be all wrong. Rumors are for a reason. To keep us safe from danger" She only said and then took Bora's hand and continue walking while smiling a bit. What was wrong with Yoohyeon? And why was Siyeon acting like that?...
We went to the cafeteria and sat on our favorite table. The one at the corner, beside the windows, the one that everyone was always looking at. It was ours. Yoohyeon and her company never sat there. Actually no one sat there. But she didn't sit on a table near ours either. Most kids would die to sit beside us or have our attention. But no... Yoohyeon was different. Maybe Siyeon was right after all. Different things always attracted me more.
Yoohyeon and her company always sat at another table in the other corner, far away from everyone. That's why everyone could forget them easily. They were always in places where no one could see them. And they were going to sit there now too. Till Handong stopped them and show them our table.
Siyeon looked at Yoohyeon intenselly and the later just walked passed her and sat at the corner of our table. She was always trying to be invisible. Everyone sat at their seats so I sat where I always sat, which was the center of our table. I couldn't see Yoohyeon that well from here, but I knew that she wasn't alone or sitting beside Siyeon. She had Dami next to her and I was more than glad for that. As we sat Handong started asking us what we will take for food. She then stood up with Bora and Dami and went to brought us our food. Siyeon was scrolling through her phone so I decided to talk to Yoohyeon. Or else...it would be really awkward.
"Are you ok Yoohyeon?" I asked her smiling hoping for an answer.
"I could be better." She mumbled under her breath. I still heard her though. But I decided to not ask further. She seemed uncomfortable anyway. She was looking at the table and nowhere else. Her eyes were focused there. I thought for a second that her stare could break it or something!
"Why are you sitting with us if you aren't feeling comfortable then?" Siyeon asked her though. I hit her in her arm and looked at her angrily. Why was she doing that? She looked at me with that empty stare she was giving Yoohyeon some seconds ago and then turned her attention back to her phone mumbling something like 'mute girl'. I pinched her arm again and this time she didn't even look at me!
"Excuse Siyeon. She can be rude sometimes. It's her way to be humoristic." I told Yoohyeon. She just nodded her head a little without looking at me. I just stared at her. I didn't know what to do to make her feel comfortable. Until Siyeon talked again.
"She will not talk to you Minji. You are wasting your time. She is mute and maybe she is deaf too. At least that's what the boys are calling her now." She said and laughed a little.
"Siyeon! Damn It! Be nice for once! I don't understand what Bora even sees in you! You are always so rude to everyone! You are worse than what the rumors about Yoohyeon are!" I yelled at her frustrated. She stared at me dropping her phone on the table. If stares could kill I would be dead. I knew I made a really big mistake by telling her that, but she had crossed the line!
"I'm not like her!" she said grumbled angrily.
"Yeah, you are worse!" I yelled this time louder. Some students turned to look at us. They were always looking at us but now we were their attention completely.
'She is taking the deaf girl's side.' Some of them whispered. Siyeon looked at them madly and they quickly looked away. She have heard them. And that made her even more mad. She stood up ready to go when Yoohyeon stood up too. She took her bag really quickly and walked away silently like the way she came in the cafeteria. Siyeon stared at her till she was out of our sight and then she looked back at me.
"Look what you've done!" I whispered-shouted at her. She was looking at me blankly now. I could care less. I ran to catch up with Yoohyeon leaving them behind. Bora and Handong were yelling my name but I had more important things to care than to answer to them.
I was looking everywhere around me while running. Where did she go? She was a few steps away from me! How can she got lost from my sight that easily?! I stopped to take some breaths. She was nowhere to be seen. And I didn't know her that much to know where she would prefer to sit alone at times like those. So I couldn't find her that easily. But I wasn't willing to give up either. I started searching all classes till I got out at the back yard. Somewhere at the corner under a big tree with many leaves on it was a girl with grey hair, sitting alone. When I came closer I could see that it was Yoohyeon. I run up to her and stopped in front of her. I took some deep breaths again and then I spoke:
"Are you ok? Why did you run away? Siyeon can just fuck off. That's how she is. I'm sorry about her behaviour. I truly am. She just..."
"It's ok. I don't blame her." She said softly. I wanted to hear her talking more in my life. I needed it. And I needed to see her smiling more in my life too. I looked at her face. She seemed deadpan. She was actually like that all the time. How could she be untouched by this harsh behaviour from Siyeon? I sat beside her and held her arm slightly, afraid that she might not like it. She was untouched once again. She only shuddered. I wanted to show her that I cared about her. I was sure she was holding all this pain in her chest and she was dealing with it alone. I wanted to help her.
"Why did you run off?" I asked her again.
"I was a burden." She answered after a little while.
"No you weren't." I told her smiling and held her hand tighter. I was looking at her and only. But she never looked at me. She was looking far away at the trees of the yard. She was doing it again. Avoiding me. She did it in the bus station too. I didn't know if I should stop being this close to her or holding her hand or not. But I continued doing it cause I felt that she needed it. Maybe I was the one that needed it.
"You just pity me" She said blankly.
"No I don't. And you weren't a burden. Why do you think that?"
"You were fighting with Siyeon for me." She said in almost a whisper.
"Yeah cause Siyeon is dumb and believes in stupid rumors! She doesn't even know you!"
"And? You don't believe in them?"
"No! Of course not!" I thought this was obvious!
"I only bring you trouble though..." she whispered.
"No you don't."
"Yeah I do. You should stop talking to me. And you'll see you'll never fight again with Siyeon." She, for once, said something longer than two or three words.
"No I will not stop talking to you. She is wrong and she should know it. Even if we stop talking I still won't believe in those rumors and I still will fight with her about it." I tried to convince her and caressed her hand smoothly.
"What if the rumors are true?" She asked me and this time she was looking at me straight in my eyes. I was feeling nervous under her stare. But I also could see how beautiful she was as a person.
"They aren't." I told her sure of myself and smiled at her brightly.
"You are a wonderful person Yoohyeon. I'm sure of it. And I only believe you and no one else." I told her when she looked away and hugged her arm. I rested my head on her shoulder.
"Why are you talking to me?" She asked some minutes later.
"Why not to?" I asked looking at her face while I raised my eyebrows.
"Because no one else does." she said softly and looked on the ground this time.
"I'm not like everyone else Yoohyeon. Plus, we have Handong as a mutual friend. We can't just not talk!" I told her smiling. She nodded her head after thinking about it for a while. Then, our peaceful moment was over. The bell rang and we stood up to go to our next class. I hoped she was alright and that she would be alright. She wasn't talking that much and I was sure that she had gone through a lot and that she still was. I needed to be on her side.
